     This is one of the very best Sonny Criss albums. The distinctive altoist, who is here joined by guitarist Ray Crawford, pianist Dolo Coker, bassist Larry Gales, and drummer Jimmie Smith, is in prime form on a lengthy "The Isle of Celia," Benny Carter's "Blues in My Heart," the boppish blues "Crisscraft," and two shorter pieces. Criss, who had not recorded as a leader in six years, was really ready for this session, making this his definitive set to get. The CD reissue adds an alternate version of "Blues in My Heart" plus a slightly later version of "Out of Nowhere" to the original (and memorable) program.

     BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is jazz saxophone icon Paul Desmond's homage to Simon and Garfunkel.

     Originally released in 1970 on A&M Records, Paul Desmond's BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is the label's last release to bear the influence of producer Creed Taylor. Like Taylor's earlier A&M albums with Desmond, Wes Montgomery and others, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER is a complex blend of cool jazz, easy listening, and pop, featuring lush orchestrations behind Desmond's alto sax and Herbie Hancock's electric piano. Taken entirely from the Paul Simon songbook, the 10 cuts range from a hymn-like reading of the title track to a spunky Latin-jazz take on "Cecilia."

     The only one of Jimmy Giuffre's valuable Atlantic recordings to thus far be reissued on CD, this disc features the first version of Giuffre's 3. With guitarist Jim Hall and either Ralph Pena or Jim Atlas on bass, Giuffre is heard on clarinet, tenor and baritone. The generally introverted music is wistful, has a fair amount of variety, and is melodic while still sounding advanced. In addition to the nine original songs (including the earliest recording of Giuffre's classic folk song "The Train and the River"), two previously unreleased tunes (including "Forty-Second Street") were added to the CD reissue.      This unusual CD is subtitled "Vince Benedetti Meets Diana Krall." Benedetti, a Swiss trombonist, ran into Krall quite by accident in 1988, enjoyed hearing her perform, and persuaded her to play some concerts with his quartet. This 1990 recording is the result, and it predates Krall's other records by several years. Of course, if Krall were not involved in this project, chances are it would never have been released. The seven songs (two of which are performed twice) include five somewhat forgettable Benedetti originals plus his words to Harold Vick's "Your Destiny" and Isla Eckinger's "Detroit Blues." Krall plays piano, sings on most of the material, and sometimes has harmonized vocal duets with guitarist Martien Oster. While the overall music is decent, nothing memorable takes place, so this is a historical curiosity that is the earliest recording released thus far of the soon-to-be-famous Diana Krall. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
