Les Paul & Mary Ford - Guitar Wizard |

 |
Artists: Les Paul/Mary Ford Album: Guitar Wizard Label: Proper Pairs Release: 2002 Format MP3 320 Kbps / Flac Size: 100431 KB ~ 53609 KB Since harmony and singing groups was my main interest in the '50's, Mary Ford was at the top of my list of incredible singers. Actually, I discovered Les Paul through hearing her! And more than his out of this world ability to play guitar, Les's knowledge of multi-tracked recording techniques pulled me in closer. I couldn't get enough of her (their) records. I, as a teenager, as young as 13, would sing the third part harmony to her "self" duets, I.E., Vaya Con Dios, Mockingbird Hill. She was as smooth as velvet. She still is a part of every vocal production I work on. She truly is an inspiration. I was deeply saddened by her passing and still feel robbed about not hearing more about her throughout her career and her life. When Mary died in 1977, not much was published about her. I've always been interested in what her relationship with Les was from a collaborating point of view. What must it have been like developing their sounds? What were Mary's interest's ? What caused their split and what did she go on to do? I know they had children. I once met Les with Les, Jr. at Harvey Radio on 45th Street in Manhattan in the '60's. Les was buying a mic for him, as I recall. I was just there buying some audio supplies at the time for Skitch Henderson (my other employer at Studio 3). And I worked with Gene Paul in the '70's at Atlantic Records during vocal group, The Manhattan Transfer's first Atlantic album. I guess my love of her work crossed the barriers of unknown forces because I've received a series of emails from one who had seen this site and I asked her about Mary. Here is was she's told me ~ Jim Reeves |

(Guitar Player Magazine Readers Choice Award - USA) "Pierre’s music gives me the shakes. No other guitarist shares his strange gifts of sophistication, accessibility and downright joy. Even at its most complex, Pierre’s music only needs ears to be enjoyed." Leo Kottke "Listening to Pierre Bensusan is rejuvenating. Beside his extraordinary touch and tone, the notes and melody appeal directly to the tender side of our human nature." Steve Vai "One of the truly gifted musicians of our time - he plays the guitar as if it were the very soul of himself." George Winston "Bensusan gently lures his punters into a world where the sky is not just a different hue, bit an entirely different texture, and fulfills a different function too. Instead of offering a roof on his world, it’s simply a springboard to an entirely different plane where three chords and the truth simply don’t cut it. With the entire audience on side, Bensusan’s inveterate pursuit of music’s less navigated terrain is still a show-stopper - and resonate long after he sounded his final note." Artists: VA Album: Three Of A Kind Category: Jazz 1950's-1960's Albums Label: Design DLP-905 Release Year: 1963 Vinyl Color: Black Record Info: Original Release Format MP* 320Kbps / Flac(LP-rip) Size:45085 KB / 84067 KB Vitamins pills I’ve taken, dexadrine by the score, Swedish masseurs massage me, ‘til sore”.... Lyrics from the fab song “Lazy Lover” from a cheapie compilation album series “Three of a Kind” on Design records, featuring Les Paul, Art Van Damme, and Page Cavanaugh. There’s tons of Les Paul music still in print, so I’m only including two of the cuts from the album, “Dark Eyes” and “Cherokee”. The Van Damme cuts were a very pleasant surprise and sent me on a quest for more. But the gems of the album for me are from Page Cavanaugh, whose white boy King Cole Trio-type music I have sung the praises of on PCL. The oddball “Lazy Lover” is a solid keeper, and “Junior Hop” will surely stick around for a while on my playlist. Some Page Cavanaugh music is still in print, but the 4 cuts here are currently out of print. |

Artist: Ludovic BEIER Album: New Montmartre (2003) Genre: Jazz swing manouche Musette Gypsy Label: Marianne Mйlodie Number of Compositions: 12 Total Time: 50:47 Year: 2003 Format, birate: MP3 320 Kbps / Flac File Size: 76800 KB ~ 45056 KB The accordion seems to be making tentative advances in jazz at present, and it is in France that most new, young players are likely to appear. Ludovic Beier, aged 25, was brought up in the French tradition of the instrument and turned to jazz only a few years ago. He has a spirited, adventurous style which strays into all kinds of byways, such as samba, waltz and sentimental ballad, but still manages to hang together nicely. He certainly has an impressive technique, and a band that keeps him at full stretch, especially pianist Christophe Cravero. There is an easy grace about Beier’s playing, a lack of pretentiousness which makes for very pleasant listening. |

Artists: Angelo DEBARRE & Ludovic BEIER Album: Paroles De Swing (2007) Genre: Jazz Swing Manouche Gypsy Label: Le Chant Du Monde Number of Compositions: 14 Total Time: 45:26 Year: 2007 Format, birate: MP3 320 Kbps / Flac Size: 6690 KB ~ 100431 KB Parole(s) de swing [Word(s) of swing]… Coming from a culture where giving your word amounts to signing a contract, this may seem tantamount to saying ”Gypsy’s honour” or ”Cross my Manouche heart”… Anyway, it’s easy to guess that it’s not just a question of vain words or honour of anything here (if we do nothing but keep that neat little catchphrase in mind, however short lived it may be). And we’ll be all the more convinced we’re right when we learn that these original lyrics, superbly assumed by a Sanseverino rarely heard or seen so well accompanied, have been set to music by accordionist Ludovic Beier – to mention the two songs that mark this album – and the words are from the pen of none other than Angelo Debarre. Of course his hands are part of the talking process too, they’ve done most of the orchestration on the album (just listen to the exposition on ‘Paris je t’aime’) to song tunes (so we’ve come full circle). And the two fellow-travellers (Angelo and Ludovic) have never made music in such total unison (see ’Sous le ciel de Paris’). Noted and approved! |

Artist: Carl Kress Album: Guitar Stylist Year - 1946-1947 Label - Capital - Classics In Jazz Genre - Jazz Tracks - 8 Format - Vinyl Rip - MP3 320 kbps / Flac Size: 100431 KB ~ Size: 18367 KB One of the great guitarists of the 1930s, Carl Kress had a very sophisticated chordal style on acoustic guitar. He originally played banjo before gradually shifting to guitar. Kress played with Paul Whiteman in 1926 and then became a very busy studio musician, recording with all of the top white musicians (including Bix Beiderbecke, Red Nichols’ Five Pennies, and two classic duets with Eddie Lang) in those segregated days. Kress often teamed up with fellow guitarist Dick McDonough in the 1930s, he co-owned the Onyx Club on 52nd Street for a time, and continued working in the studios into the 1960s, playing during his last years in a duo with George Barnes. Most of Carl Kress’ solo and duet (with McDonough) recordings from the 1930s are long overdue to be reissued. |

Artists: Catherine Escoude Lockwood Trio Album: Changements D’avis Label : JMS Year: 1983 , release 1984 Format MP3 320Kbps / Flac Size: 100,431 mb ~ Size: 222 mb This is an interesting set featuring both Philip Catherine and the lesser-known Christian Escoude on guitars, plus violinist Didier Lockwood—not a typical trio record. The music often swings a la Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, but the repertoire (three songs apiece by each of the musicians) is more advanced, actually falling into the post-bop genre. Lockwood in particular excels in this setting, making one regret that this Gramavision LP has yet to be reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artists: Trio GitansAlbum: Tree Of A KindLabel : JMS Ref : LP JMS038 Date de sortie : 1985 Format MP3 320 Kbps /Flac Size: 100431 KB ~ Size: 1630 KB Three great guitarists who, with this album illustrate the current modern jazz gypsy, namely that of Django of 53 and his disciples, we naturally think Laro Sollero (in which the first title is rightly dedicated), to René Mailhes , Marcel Bianchi, Joseph Reinhardt, Elek Bacsik and many others ... This exceptional panel of three guitarists who happened time was quickly dubbed Gypsy Trio. On an original repertoire, each player having made up two or three titles, musicians go the floor inventing questions and answers on electric guitar as well as on good old Selmer or other Favino. In this connection, moreover, employment Escoudé by the infamous guitar-synth is not the best effect. Some older sounds too bad! The album ends on a tribute to Django shaped medley rather sympathetic with clever arrangements. Finally, a New Gypsy Trio has been set up in 2005 around Escoudé Christian, accompanied by David Reinhardt and Martin Taylor. We are anxious to hear it |

Artist: Mundell Lowe Album: The Mundell Lowe Quartet Label: OJC Yeare:1955, release:1992 Format MP3 320 kbps / Flac. Size: 100431 KB ~ 7533 KB With covers. Total time: 37:00 Most of this set is essentially straightahead bebop with guitarist Mundell Lowe heard in top form on such numbers as "Will You Still Be Mine," "I'll Never Be the Same," "All of You" and "Cheek to Cheek." The wild card here is Dick Hyman who, in addition to piano and some celeste on "The Night We Called It a Day," mostly plays organ. His tone is thin and restrained, almost as if he were playing a cheap electric piano; Jimmy Smith would not make his presence known for another year. However Lowe is the main voice throughout this fairly colorful Riverside quartet date (also including supportive playing by bassist Trigger Alpert and drummer Ed Shaughnessy) which has been reissued on CD in the OJC series. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Django Reinhardt - Djangology (2CD) |

Artist: Django Reinhardt Album: Djangology LABEL: RECALL Year: 1949, release: 2000 Genre: Gypsy swing jazz manouche Format MP3 320 Kbps / Flac Size: 100431 KB ~ Size: 3207 KB A few years after their postwar reunion, Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his most illustrious foil and confrere, violinist Stephane Grappelli, recorded perhaps as many as fifty tunes in the space of a couple of months in 1949 in Rome. The Italian rhythm section of piano, bass and drums was probably intended to "modernize" the frontmen's sound, replacing as it did their more Gallic all-string band of the 1930s, the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. But like the two-guitars-and-bass backing Reinhardt and Grappelli pioneered fifteen years earlier, this American-style rhythm section stays out of the way, and violin and guitar are the stars of the show. |
