   Joey and his trio have done an amazing job. This disc offers a delicious mix of experiment and tradition. The eight tunes are carefully selected and Joey, saxophonist Jerry Weldon and drummer Byron Landham groove and swing together in truly inimitable fashion. I tend to think these guys fit so perfectly together that they could steal from each other's pockets. Gone should be the days when Joey was referred to as "the late Jimmy Smiths disciple" - Joey has been an established artist in his own right for quite a long time now, and in subtlety and economy of phrasing he even surpasses his late hero.
   The record is recorded superbly - never had I heard the sound of a drumkit so faithfully reproduced until I bought this CD.

     The "Truth" about this CD is: It is actually a compilation of songs that have been OVERLOOKED on previous CD reissues. "Scatterbrain", a hit for BG in 1939, being a perfect example. This CD is like, "Fill In the Blanks." As a performing artist, Benny Goodman never missed, and this CD proves it. These songs are actually taken from a list of tunes that I sent to Gordon Anderson because he did such a good job of bringing back forgotten music. The reason why various songbirds are featured here is because some of them didn't last long, but collectively they recorded enough tunes to fill a present-day CD.

Journeyman tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton keeps things light and swinging on Back in New York. Bringing to mind a mix of Dexter Gordon and Ben Webster, Hamilton has always displayed an unerring classicist aesthetic, and this album is no exception. Featuring the deft rhythm section of pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kenny Washington, Back in New York is a template for what solid modern mainstream jazz should sound like. Shirley Scott was indeed the Queen of the Organ and this 14-track collection of her work for Prestige, Bluesville, and Moodsville gives ample proof of that fact. The collection covers the years 1958 to 1964 and features her recordings as a leader and as a sideman. Her light and swinging tone at the B-3 made her a perfect foil for the great tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis; three tracks from their fruitful partnership are included, a highlight being the rocking take on Davis' "The Chef." She also teamed up with her husband at the time, Stanley Turrentine, for some sessions in the early '60s, and two tracks -- the rollicking "Soul Shoutin'" and the swinging "Five Spot After Dark" -- are included. She also did sessions backing singers; from those sessions a killer version of "(Night Time Is) The Right Time" by Al Smith and "Person to Person" by Mildred Anderson are included. The rest of the disc is made up of sessions Scott led, and all are first-rate soul-jazz workouts. Of special note are her storming version of "Caravan" and a moody take on Sonny Rollins' "Blue Seven," with a fiery solo by trumpet great Joe Newman. Scott is often overlooked when lists of the great jazz organ players are made. Anyone who listens to her stellar work on this highly enjoyable collection will see just what a mistake that glaring omission is. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide

Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton's debut for Concord (which has been reissued on CD) alerted the jazz world to the young swing stylist and predated Wynton Marsalis' first record (and the emergence of the Young Lions) by a couple years. Hamilton, who mixed together Zoot Sims and Ben Webster to form his own recognizable tone, already sounded in prime form for this set. Teamed up with trumpeter Bill Berry, pianist Nat Pierce, bassist Monty Budwig, and drummer Jake Hanna, Hamilton essentially launched the revival of mainstream jazz with this record. Предлагаю послушать и поделиться своим мнением об этом альбоме. Это, на мой взгляд, очень хороший и довольно редкий альбом. Лично я очень люблю этого блюзмена.

Он исполнял блюз так и столько, как и сколько захотел и задумал восьмилетним пацаном - до самого конца, пережив себя, заделав брешь между сельским и городским блюзом и вписав свое имя золотыми буквами в заветные скрижали блюзового жанра.

Originally released as The Roots of Lightnin' Hopkins, Smithsonian/Folkways' Lightnin' Hopkins was recorded in 1959. Upon its initial release, it was a pivotal part of the blues revival and helped re-spark interest in Hopkins. Before it was recorded, the bluesman had disappeared from sight; after a great deal of searching, Sam Charters found Hopkins in a rented one-room apartment in Houston. Persuading Lightnin' with a bottle of gin, Charters convinced Hopkins to record ten songs in that room, using only one microphone. The resulting record was one of the greatest albums in Hopkins' catalog, a skeletal record that is absolutely naked in its loneliness and haunting in its despair. These unvarnished performances arguably capture the essence of Lightnin' Hopkins better than any of his other recordings, and it is certainly one of the landmarks of the late-'50s/early-'60s blues revival. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide

     Guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli returns with another solid collection of tastefully swinging standards on Knowing You. Never straying too far from what he does best, Pizzarelli is nonetheless an exciting improviser and pleasing vocalist who always finds a way to make an old chestnut of a tune his own. Here, his rapport with such longtime bandmates as pianist Ray Kennedy, bassist Martin Pizzarelli, and drummer Tony Tedesco is instinctual, full of humor, and filled with call-and-response interplay. To these ends, Pizzarelli has compiled an enjoyable set of well- and lesser-known standards, including the sprightly swinger "Coffee, Black," the elegantly mellow "The Shadow of Your Smile," and the sweetly unexpected Brian Wilson classic "God Only Knows." That interesting song choice and the Rupert Holmes-esque original title track also show Pizzarelli's ability to push his talents into contemporary areas without alienating his fan base. Кстати, Джон дебютировал в начале 80-х в ансамбле отца, да и сейчас 79-летний папа Бакки совсем не прочь выступить и записаться с сыном - правда, уже не как солист, а как один из последних мастеров аккордовой игры на свинговой ритм-гитаре.
     Новый альбом Джона - 20-й в его дискографии и 6-й на Telarc - с уверенностью можно назвать лучшим (наряду с маленьким шедевром "After Hours" - Novus, 1995). За полтора десятилетия работы с постоянным квартетом (пианист Рэй Кеннеди, барабанщик Тони Тедеско и еще один член династии - контрабасист Мартин Пиццарелли, второй сын Бакки) взаимодействие Джона и его музыкантов достигло почти телепатического уровня, а изысканная работа приглашенных солистов изрядно украшает несложную игру ансамбля - особенно хочется отметить органиста Лари Голдингса, тенориста Харри Аллена и супругу Джона, певицу Джессику Моласки.
     Самое главное здесь, впрочем, все-таки вокал Джона - бесхитростный, романтичный, безо всяких украшений и технических ухищрений. Это и есть сила Пиццарелли: спеть просто. Или - просто спеть. И попасть в точку.

     Джеймс Картер - из поколения "крутых молодых тенористов" (кстати, в записи одноименного альбома - "Tough Young Tenors" - он участвовал) и, пожалуй, самый техничный сейчас саксофонист в мире. Он владеет альтом, сопрано, баритоном, бас-кларнетом и вообще всем дудящим, включая австралийский диджериду, но его конек - тенор-саксофон. Альбом "Допотопная классика" превосходно иллюстрирует абсолютную степень его владения инструментом (вернее, инструментами - при записи он играл на сопрано, альте и теноре). Со стилистической точки зрения альбом граничит с авангардом. Во всяком случае, кратко изложив соответствующую "допотопную" тему (Эллингтона или там Монка), следующие семь, одиннадцать или даже тринадцать минут Картер безостановочно "поливает", путешествуя от современной традиции к абсолютной "собачатине". Запись можно отнести к эталонным для жанра: ее сделал Джим Андерсон на Power Station еще в те дни, когда эта уникальная студия с полностью деревянным объемом не была переименована в Avatar. The Festival Album was the only live set by the Jazz Crusaders not recorded at the Lighthouse. As such, it is a compilation of performances recorded at the Pacific Jazz and Newport Festivals in 1966. The band had two different bass players during these gigs: Jimmy Bond was at the Newport Festival, while Herbie Lewis joined for the Pacific Jazz Festival. The band was well established everywhere but in New York, bewilderingly, and had recorded a dozen records, all of which were popular. And it's easy to see why. The version of Ken Cox's "Trance Dance" that opens the set showcases all of the band's strengths: solid hard bop chops and arrangements with a deep accent on the blues as it was emerging into soul-jazz. Soloists Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson, and Wilton Felder are all in fine form here. The deep groove on "Summer's Madness" by the trio is actually the signature piece of the Jazz Crusaders' sound at the time. Sample's "Freedom Sound," from the Pacific Jazz gig, illustrates the deep lyricism at the heart of the band's front line. The CD version contains two bonus tracks recorded later that year at Shelly Manne's Hole, with Buster Williams on bass. The sound gels here to make something truly unique, as evidenced by the funkier than funky "Wilton's Boogaloo," with killer solos by the saxophonist and Henderson, and a smoking beat by Stix Hooper. It's loose, in the pocket and freewheeling -- and over 11 minutes in length! The set closes with the driving "Half and Half" by Charles Davis, which is a vamp on "My Favorite Things," with a knotty arrangement, a sprightly tempo, and features some incredible snare and cymbal work by Hooper. ~ Thom Jurek, AMG
