Chet Baker - Baker's Holiday (Plays Billie Holiday) (1965) |

Album: Baker's Holiday (Plays Billie Holiday) Artist: Chet Baker Release Date: 1965 Genre: Jazz, BeBop Format/Bitrate: MP3/320kbps Size: 67 Mb Baker's Holiday is an endearing and smoky tribute to singing legend Billie Holiday. Backed by a smartly arranged reed section, Chet Baker and his quartet swing with great dynamism on all 10 tracks. Jimmy Mundy's arrangements give this album the feel of a 1940's big band, and Baker seems comfortable recreating some of the mystique and elegance of a bygone era. Artist - Mark Whitfield Album - True Blue Label: Verve Records Quality: MP3@320 Release: 1994 Size: 176 Mb + all covers Total time: 01:15:04 REPOST with new links from Mr. peer57. Mark Whitfield is a throwback. In an era when most jazz guitarists favor a brash, metallic tone, Whitfield is the soul of mellowness. Playing a hollow-body Gibson, the 26-year-old gets a soothing, almost acoustic tone from his electric instrument. His new album, "True Blue," is devoted to "a true mix of jazz and blues," as the liner notes put it, but even in the earthy genre of the blues, Whitfield sounds tastefully laid-back. Joining Whitfield on his first recording for Verve are three members of the Branford Marsalis Quartet (and the Tonight Show Band)--pianist Kenny Kirkland, drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts and saxophonist Marsalis--as well as bassist Rodney Whitaker and trumpeter Nicholas Payton. In terms of technique, Whitfield has no problem holding his own in this company, for his timing is impeccable and his solos are inventive and well shaped. In terms of projecting his own personality, however, this self-effacing bandleader is all too easily overshadowed by his guests. |

Artist - Harold Mabern Album - Straight Street Label : Disk Union Quality : mp3@320 Release date : 1991 Size : 130 Mo (96+34) + Covers For a time in the early 1990s, some of the CDs from the Japanese DIW label were made available domestically through Columbia. This trio date by pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette has Mabern originals dedicated to Sonny Stitt and Wayne Shorter, plus some offbeat standards and a pair of rarely performed John Coltrane tunes ("Straight Street" and "Crescent"). The interplay between the musicians is impressive and Mabern is heard throughout in excellent form. He closes the set with a piano solo that he titled "Apab and Others," after Art Tatum, Phineas Newborn, Ahmad Jamal and Bud Powell. This will be a difficult CD to find. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

James Carter - Chasin' The Gypsy |

Artist: James Carter Album - Chasin' The Gypsy Label : Atlantic Quality : mp3@320 Release date : 2000 Size : 122 Mb (96+26) + Covers For Chasin' the Gypsy, James Carter enlists violinist (and cousin) Regina Carter, drummer Joey Baron, guitar mainstay Jay Berliner, and several others to tackle this homage to Gypsy guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt. The bustle and muscle are in balance, with accordion, steel-string guitar, bass saxophone, violin, and drums flawlessly chugging through these nine tunes. --Andrew Bartlett Reinhardt's melodic savvy, jubilant swing and wit are not lost on James Carter, who booms into the opener "Nuages" blowing the tune's head on a body-rattling bass sax--the initial surprise of hearing this uncommon instrument played with such effortless warmth is enough to coax a smile. Moving easily between tenor, soprano and f mezzo horn, Carter conjures many emotional moods; from the haunted, vibrato-soaked heartbreak of "La Derniere Bergere" to the carnivalesque accordion and sly musical smirk of "Manoir De Mes Reves." James Carter has certainly been CHASIN' THE GYPSY--sounds like he might have caught her, too. |

Artist - James Spaulding Album - Down With It Label: Futura Quality: MP3@320 Release: 2006 Size: 160 Mb (96+64) + covers Total Time: 45:25 Most reviews or discussions of the music of altoist/flutist James Spaulding have focused on his status of ”sixties sideman extraordinaire” or something similar. Of course, inherent in that is the question of why Spaulding never made a record as a leader for Blue Note, the label on which most of his appearances occurred. While certainly his work with Wayne Shorter, Tyrone Washington, Larry Young, and of course Freddie Hubbard is of a piece, giving a keen sense of Spaulding’s development as a musician, his recordings as a leader for High Note and his own Speetones label in the past two decades haven’t garnered as much notice. |

Jacky Terrasson - Mirror |

 |
Artist - Jacky Terrasson Album - Mirror Label : Blue Note Records Quality: MP3@320 Release: 2007 Size: 111 Mb (96+15) + covers Total time - 50:12 Since winning the Thelonious Monk Piano competition in 1993, Jacky Terrasson has more than validated the judges' opinions with a consistently outstanding series of CDs. Mirrors provides a rare opportunity to enjoy Terrasson in a solo piano setting. He recasts the old favorite from the Duke Ellington songbook by mixing a different vamp, adding an ominous tremolo and even taking breaks to tap on the piano's wood surface, while never losing his focus on its theme and delivering a fresh, exciting interpretation. The choppy setting of "Just a Gigolo" is an obvious nod to Thelonious Monk (who liked to toy with this standard) though Terrasson's take is even more adventurous and playful. The pianist's romp through "Cherokee" hints only briefly at the melody, showcasing his improvising with a variation of its chord changes in the bass line. His touching setting of "America the Beautiful" suggests hope in a time of turmoil. Terrasson's five originals also prove to be memorable performances. His rapid-fire "Mirror" is breath-taking, while his "Tragic Mulatto Blues" blends a heartfelt theme with a bit of turmoil. Jacky Terrasson's Mirror leaves a lasting reflection of his immense talent. Artist - Bernard ''Pretty'' Purdie Album - Soul to Jazz Label : ACT Quality : MP3@320 Release : 1996 Size : 145 Mo (96+49) + Covers Total Time: 65:08 Which musician did Aretha Franklin definitely NOT want missing from the line-up when she recorded her most inspired albums at the beginning of the seventies? Who provided the back-beat for Steely Dan's "Aja", and for whom have Isaac Hayes, Donny Hathaway, B.B. King, "Sweet" Lou Donaldson, Joe Cocker and Hank Crawford reserved that stool behind the drum kit? The list is incomplete, it must be, because no other drummer in the last three decades has seen the interior of a recording studio as often as Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. The 57 year-old native of Elkton, Maryland has laid down the beat on over 3000 albums to date. |

Artist: Marcus Roberts Album: If I Could Be with You Label: Novus Original Release Date: 1993 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Size: 167 Mb (96+71) + Covers This is one of Marcus Roberts' finest all-around recordings. The set of solo piano improvisations features Roberts performing many older tunes (including "Maple Leaf Rag" and four James P. Johnson tunes) plus some of his originals, showing off his stride technique. Roberts' right hand borders on the miraculous, while his left often breaks up rhythms, jumping one beat ahead or behind purposely for short stretches and adding tension to the performance. Among the CD's highlights are "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," "Carolina Shout," "Keep Off the Grass," "What Is This Thing Called Love," and Roberts' "Preach, Reverend, Preach." -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Curtis Amy - Peace For Love (1994) |
Music » Jazz |
 |
 |
Artist: Curtis Amy Album: Peace For Love Label: Freesh Sound Records Year: 1994 Quality: MP3@320 kbit/s Size: 135 Mb (96+39) + covers Saxophonist Curtis Amy gained some recognition for his Pacific Jazz recordings of 1960-1963, but after 1966 he worked primarily as a session and studio musician and was completely forgotten in the jazz world. In 1994, when he was 67, he was persuaded to go back in the studio and make a long-overdue jazz record for Fresh Sound. Joined by trumpeter Steve Huffsteter, trombonist Bob McChesney, Donn Wyatt or Frank Strazzeri on piano, bassist John B. Williams, and drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, Amy performs three originals that he co-wrote with Wyatt, and a song apiece by Huffsteter, Strazzeri, and Rob Mullins. The music is more advanced than his work of 30 years earlier, and, unfortunately, most of the new songs are not all that memorable. On the bright side, Amy (heard on tenor and soprano) still sounded in excellent form (his chops had not declined), and it was a welcome occasion having him back in a jazz context again. -- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide. |

Artist: Earl Hines Album: Live at the Village Vanguard Label: Columbia/Sony Year: 1965, release - 1989 Quality: MP3@320 Size: 132 (98+34) Mb + Covers Total Time: 57:47 Пианист Эрл Хайнс (род. |

Artist: Kenny Burrell Album: Bluesin' Around Label: Columbia Years: 1961/62, release - 1998 Quality: MP3@320 Recording date: 1983 Size: 85 Mb + Covers Total Time: 37:05 This collection from the late 1950s finds the guitarist in an upbeat jam session with Art Blakey, Junior Cook, Bobby Timmons, and others. A great set that falls somewhere between uptown hard bop and chicken shack blues, though the couple of romantic ballads are more in keeping with the mood of the cover art (drawn by a pre-fame Andy Warhol). |
