1978: Chet Baker - Broken Wing |
Vocal Jazz, Cool, West Coast Jazz |
 |
 |
Artist: Chet Baker Album: Broken Wing Format/bitrate: mp3/320 kbs Size: 127 mb Audio CD (15 Feb 2001) Label: Universal Classics ASIN: B000051TKO Recorded Paris, 1978 This is a good Chet Baker album that is not know so well. Lots of feeling later in his career. The Jazz in Paris-Broken Wing CD presents a 1978 quartet recording by the trumpeter Chet Baker and adds two lengthy alternative takes to the LP from which it's derived. The Paris rhythm section: Phil Markowitz on piano, Jean-Francois Jenny-Clarke on bass and Jeff Brillinger on drums provide ideal support with some particularly impressive bass solos. Chet's wistful singing is heard on "Oh, You Crazy Moon" but otherwise his poignant trumpet, lyrical and beautifully controlled, is predominant. The spirit of Miles Davis hovers at Chet's shoulder, but he has his own tone and phrasing, less dramatic but subtly insinuating. "Blue Gilles", a Baker original, is a very slow, mournful lament dedicated to Gilles Gautherin, the producer of this session. Wayne Shorter's "Black Eyes", which comes in two versions, has a medium-tempo bossa nova beat, but otherwise it's the slower tempos, at which Baker excelled, that determine the reflective ambience of this late December Franco-American encounter. --Graham Colombé |

Artist: Merle Haggard Album: Same Train, Different Time Label: Bear Family Styles: Traditional Country, Bakersfield Sound Years: 1968-1969, release: 1995 Format: MP3/320 Size: 145 mb AMG Rating: Same Train, Different Time is Merle Haggard's affectionate tribute to Jimmie Rodgers. Haggard provides narration between the songs, offering tales of Rodgers' life and music. While the album is rooted in the past, the key to its success is how Haggard updates these traditional songs without losing sight of their roots. There are contemporary folk, country and blues influences scattered throughout the record, adding depth to the music and proving that Rodgers' music is indeed timeless. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |

Cornell Dupree - Coast To Coast |

Artist: CORNELL DUPREE & WHO IT IS Album: COAST TO COAST Label: ANTILLES Format: MP3/320 Size: 108 MB It should have come as no surprise that ace session guitarist Cornell Dupree could come up with as thoroughly tasty a solo album as this, but it is a surprise nonetheless since we're so accustomed to hearing his distinctive touch backing someone else. Here the menu is bedrock R&B/jazz with roots in the 1960s, and Dupree's highly expressive signature blues style is everywhere, although he does adopt a more generic rock style on one occasion. At the same time, ever the team player, Dupree also frequently puts on his formidable rhythm boots and drives his quintet forward. Richard Tee rides barrelhouse R&B piano on an instrument that sounds as if the strings were steel rods, along with his familiar chorused electric piano sound. Lou Marini adds trademark soul licks on saxophones, while Frank Canino (bass) and Christopher Parker (drums) complement the leader's subtle use of space. Most of the tunes are Dupree's, save for a couple of contributions by Tee and a nice cover of the Jacksons' "Destiny," and it all goes down with plenty of back-home Southern dignity and grit. Artist - Ike Quebec Album - Complete Blue Note 45's Label - Blue Note Years: 1959-1962 Quality - MP3@192 kbps & MP3@320 kbps Size: 176 MB or 320 MB AMG Rating: These 26 tunes, recorded at three sessions between 1959 and 1962, were initially done to produce 45-pm singles for the jukebox market. The material leans heavily toward standards with a few bluesy originals thrown in. Quebec’s vulnerable, big-toned tenor caresses every melody beautifully and his heartfelt solos are stirring. Sidemen include Sir Charles Thompson (on organ), Milt Hinton and Skeeter Best. REPOST with new links and better quality from Peer57 |

Artist: Buddy Tate Album: Buddy Tate and his Celebrity Club Orchestra Label: Black & Blue Year: 1968, release 2001 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Buddy Tate led a band at New York's Celebrity Club for many years. But it did not get to record very often. It is to the shame of American record companies that it was Black and Blue in Paris that recorded this band in 1968. This band has a great line up of jazz veterans all on great form. |

Artist - George Benson Album - Body Talk Label - CTI Genre - Smooth jazz, R&B Year - 1973 Quality - MP3@320kbps Size - 91,9mb Total time - 48:33 The CTI sound. This was one of the early attempts at making commercial smooth jazz. Creed Taylor who originally worked with Impulse records, did his best to package Benson. You may find the horn arrangements a bit dated but the playing is quite good. You have all of the trappings of the CTI label, Fender Rhodes, horns, Ron Carter bass and a selection of songs that are accessable to the public. When you look at the whole "smooth jazz" movement, you have to admit - they haven't come any further than Benson did during the 70's. It's all a replay of what a few musicians did so well during the 70's. |
