2008: The Bad Plus - For All I Care |
Music » Jazz » Fusion » Contemporary Jazz |

 |
Artist: The Bad Plus Album: For All I Care Label: Heads Up Year/Release: 2008 Genre: Contemporary Jazz/Jazz-Rock Format, bitrate: MP3 320 kbps Time: 40 minutes approximately Size: 116 MB; Full covers included That the Bad Plus have recorded pop covers since their inception as a piano/bass/drums trio is a given in their M.O. The Minnesota-based trio has consistently added tunes by Blondie, Queen, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Ornette Coleman, and Burt Bacharach to their albums -- in addition to their own compositions -- as they've gone about reinventing the piano trio sound and dynamic in jazz (they have become the loudest, most hard rocking acoustic trio in the music's history). Some critics have accused them of camp, but this is simply a pronouncement of ignorance and prejudicial conservative and "preservationist" paranoia. After a decade of working together, the Bad Plus, following up their brilliant 2007 album Prog, have undergone some major changes: they left Sony and now record themselves independently. >>> |

1958: George Russell - New York New York |

Artist: George Russell Label: GRP/Decca Year: 1958, release:2001 Quality: FLAC remastered Size: 265 mb AMG Rating George Russell was one of the most forward-thinking composers and arrangers on the jazz scene during the 1950s, but his work was generally more appreciated by musicians than the jazz-buying public. New York, New York represents one of many high points in his career. He assembled an all-star orchestra, including pianist Bill Evans (a frequent participant on Russell's recordings), Art Farmer, Bob Brookmeyer, John Coltrane, and Milt Hinton, among others. In Rodgers & Hart's "Manhattan," Russell has the soloists playing over the orchestra's vamp, while he also creates an imaginative "East Side Medley" combining the standards "Autumn in New York" and "How About You." His original material is just as striking as his arrangements, while vocalist Jon Hendricks serves as narrator between orchestra segments. While this release has been reissued several times, it rarely remains in print for long, so don't miss the opportunity to acquire this elusive CD. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Artist: Art Tatum Album: California Melodies Release Date: July 28, 1994 Recorded: 1940 Format: Mp3 320 kbps Label: Memphis Archives Size: 150 MB Includes covers & liner notes by Stephen LaVere This fantastic group of radio performances from 1940 captures the piano genius in classic form. Playing a couple of piano solos each week on a radio show entitled California Melodies , Tatum runs through two dozen absolutely amazing turns on classics like 'Caravan,' 'Begin the Beguine,' 'Stompin' at the Savoy,' 'Where or When,' 'Tea for Two,' 'All The Things You Are,' 'Body and Soul,' and 'I Cried for You.' Many of these versions vary quite a bit from the better-known commercial recordings, and, as always, Tatum 's command of his instrument is nothing short of astonishing. A collection well worth tracking down. ~ Cub Koda, All Music GuideContains Tatum's only known solo recordings of "I Got Rhythm" and "Dark Eyes". |

In contrast to their hastily recorded debut, or its successor, done to stretch their performance and composition range, A Salty Dog was recorded in a reasonable amount of time, giving the band a chance to fully develop their ideas. The title track is one of the finest songs ever to come from Procol Harum and one of the best pieces of progressive rock ever heard, and a very succinct example at that at under five minutes running time -- the lyric and the music combine to form a perfect mood piece, and the performance is bold and subtle at once, in the playing and the singing, respectively. The range of sounds on the rest includes "Juicy John Pink," a superb piece of pre-World War II-style country blues, while "Crucifiction Lane" is a killer Otis Redding-style soul piece, and "Pilgrim's Progress" is a virtuoso keyboard workout. Art Tatum - Piano Starts Here |

Artist: Art Tatum Album: Piano Starts Here Label: Sony BMG Year: 2007 Format, bitrate: AAC, 160 kpbs Size: 50 MB Art Tatum’s “Piano Starts Here” album contains material that has been in print for more than 50 years. Yet the original, an incomparable jazz album that highlights the mastery of this singular musician, had been marred by nominal sound quality and other imperfections — until now. Zenph’s unique technique turns audio recordings into live performances that precisely replicate the original recording, but offer vastly improved sound quality. Listeners are transported back to the moment of creation and experience Tatum’s playing as if they were in the room when the original recordings were made. Last year, Sony BMG and Zenph Studios re-recorded Tatum’s 1949 concert at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. They placed the piano on the same stage in the same spot that Tatum played and recorded a flawless re-performance on modern equipment before a live audience. SONY BMG’s new disc is a hybrid surround-sound SACD/CD disc, which plays on all traditional CD players and sounds magnificent on Super Audio (SACD) players. It also includes a binaural version of the re-performance that provides an immersive experience. When listened to with headphones, it replicates what Tatum would have heard while he sat on the piano bench. The Zenph re-performance also corrects several problems with the original album. For one thing, playback speed was too slow on 12 of the 13 tracks, so after Zenph fixed the tempo, you hear that Tatum actually played faster than has been thought. |

Joe Pass - Virtuoso In New York |

Artist: Joe Pass Album: Virtuoso In New York Label: Pablo Records Year: 1975 Release: 2004 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps Time: 47 min Size: 108 MB The saying that "life begins at 40" is certainly open to debate — especially if you live in a youth-obsessed culture like the United States. But for jazz artists, there can be some truth in that saying; the history of jazz is full of artists who did some of their best work after 40. Joe Pass is a perfect example; Pass turned 40 in 1969, and the '70s were an amazingly productive time for the late guitar icon (who recorded frequently during that decade thanks to Pablo founder Norman Granz). In fact, Pass did so much recording during the '70s that albums of previously unreleased material were still coming out long after his death from cancer in 1994. Virtuoso in New York, for example, is an album of recordings that went unreleased for 29 years; recorded in 1975, these Granz-produced performances didn't see the light of day until 2004. And for serious Pass collectors, the arrival of Virtuoso in New York is very good news; performing unaccompanied — no bass, no drums, no piano — Pass is in fine form on familiar standards like "The Way You Look Tonight" and "We'll Be Together Again." The solo guitar format is one that Pass was quite fond of, and it serves him enjoyably well whether he is turning his attention to George Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On" or Kurt Weill's "Mack the Knife" (also known as "Moritat" or "Threepenny Opera"). As much as Virtuoso in New York has going for it, this 49-minute CD falls short of essential — there are no compelling reasons why someone with a more casual interest in Pass' legacy would choose this release over, say, 1973's stunning, absolutely essential Virtuoso. Nonetheless, Virtuoso in New York is a pleasing disc that the guitarist's hardcore fans will easily enjoy. Alex Henderson, AMG |
