Retro-swingers the Royal Crown Revue comprised vocalist Eddie Nichols, guitarist James Achor, bassist Veikko Lepisto, tenor saxophonist Mando Dorame, baritone saxophonist Bill Ungerman, trumpeter Scott Steen and drummer Daniel Glass. Debuting in 1991 with the LP Kings of Gangster Bop, the group was almost the first to catch the wave of swing-era nostalgia that crested during the latter half of the decade; with 1995's Mugzy's Move, Royal Crown Revue made their major label debut, signing to Warner Brothers. 1997's live album Caught in the Act generated the cult hit "Barflies at the Beach." The following year's The Contender featured the single "Zip Gun Bop (Reloaded)." Walk On Fire, which appeared in 1999, featured the Revue's tightest presentation with vintage instruments including original "44" ribbon microphones. Zoot suits? Black & white Brando movies? Las Vegas show bands? Sounds like something your parents would dig, right? Wrong. Royal Crown Revue is the coolest of a small crop of bands that struck gold with their own niche in post-alternative pop THE CONTENDER is not a collection of grunge guitar and gloomy, unintelligible lyrics; this is hot jumpin' swing with razor sharp horns, big, fat grooves and the hippest lounge-style vocals this side of the casino circuit.

Make no mistake; this is no gimmick. These cats blow the roof off the joint with enough swagger and swing to make Frank, Sammy and Dino proud. Дорогие друзья! Сегодня Ваш покорный слуга решил начать серию тематических публикаций под названием "ФИАЛКИ ПО СРЕДАМ", в которой буду знакомить Вас с произведениями классической музыки. Кто-то может возразить, зачем нам тут, в джазово-блюзовом клубе какое-то старьё, с которого впору разве что пыль сдувать. Позвольте с данным утверждением не согласиться (впрочем, если это скажут администраторы клуба, моё согласие или несогласие не потребуется). Тем не менее, классическая музыка, а особенно т.н. шедевры мировой классики пережили века, дошли до нас, пусть и не в первозданном виде, но даже джазовые музыканты не гнушаются исполнением классики, как в своеобразных обработках, так и в оригинальном виде (строго следуя нотам).

Ну что, друзья мои, продолжим знакомство с творчеством "основателей нео-свинга"? Как и обещал, сегодня выкладываю второй альбом, тот который мне очень понравился. Итак...

MUGZY'S MOVE is the second release from noted swingsters Royal Crown Revue. The album features some prime examples of this seven-piece ensemble's own brand of gangster-culture-laced-swing. There's the finger-snapping, bullet-flying groove of ... Full Description"Zip Gun Bop," complete with singer Eddie Nichols' between-verse, Joe-Pesci-like vocal chiding. Sinatraesque numbers like "Beyond the Sea" show the band's knack for catchy orchestration. They also provide opportunities for Nichols to show himself off as a serious crooner.

Most of the songs on MUGZY'S MOVE are arranged to allow these very talented instrumentalists to strut their individual chops at any turn. When the ensemble turns up the tempo on "Park's Place," they maintain a seamless cohesion that's held down by the dance of Veikko Lepisto's fingers across the bass strings. Trumpeter Scott Steen gives a standout performance on the track. The band doesn't shy away from humor either. "Datin' with no Dough" explores the throes of being a "cat trying to court with no scratch." Fans of the neo-swing movement shouldn't miss MUGZY'S MOVE.

By 1991, RCR had released it's first album, KINGS OF GANGSTER BOP, and was ceaselessly touring America and Europe, playing hundreds of shows to fans thrilled to hear a new genre of American music. The band also caused a stir with their love for all things vintage. From razor-sharp double-breasted suits to fedoras, hand painted 40's ties, vintage instruments, cars and furniture - the band embraced the retro lifestyle to its fullest. In city after city, the band's enthusiastic approach inspired fans to make their own connections with classic American culture and thus began the scene that would soon become a full-scale movement.

     In the latter half of the '90s, Phil Collins' career hit a bit of a sales slump, and instead of shamelessly chasing after another number one single, he decided to change pace and try something different. Returning to the drums, he assembled the Phil Collins Big Band, reviving the sound of such idols as Buddy Rich and Sonny Payne, but largely sticking with his original material. After a brief European tour in 1996 (which happened to feature Quincy Jones as conductor and Tony Bennett as vocalist), he created a new version of the band featuring several accomplished jazz and studio musicians in support -- notably alto saxophonist Gerald Albright, but also guitarist Daryl Stuermer, tenor saxophonist James Carter, and pianists George Duke and Brad Cole, among many others, in varying roles. That band toured America and Europe in 1998, and it's the one featured on the ten-song, 70-minute live album A Hot Night in Paris. Initially, it may be disarming for long-time fans (and detractors) to hear "Sussudio," "That's All," and "Against All Odds" blaring forth in brash, brassy arrangements, and it is true that the melodies can occasionally sound thin in this context, but once that first reaction passes, A Hot Night in Paris is actually entertaining. Collins doesn't try anything new with the big band form -- he just updates it with his own songs, including the Genesis chestnut "The Los Endos Suite," along with covers of Miles Davis' "Milestones" and the Average White Band's "Pick up the Pieces." As such, it's the sort of record that will inevitably irk purists, since it's targeted right at mainstream jazz audiences, ones that aren't really familiar with big band music but have a vague idea of what it sounds like, but anyone whose standards aren't quite as exacting will likely be pleasantly surprised with A Hot Night in Paris. When the band just plays -- which is quite often, since the themes are stated quickly enough so they're recognized, then they disappear -- this is swinging, accomplished music that's unpretentious and fun. It's never more than simply entertaining, but that's all it needs to be -- it's more enjoyable than any record Collins has put out in over a decade, and it suggests that this is a dignified and charming way for him to mature. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

All of the jazz-Chopin projects differed in their basic principles and we cannot evaluate them in terms of which was better and which was worse; it happens, however, that of all of the artists, only Andrzej Jagodzinski utilized this music consistently and frequently during tens, if not hundreds of concerts. Always with the same ensemble that is with the trustworthy support of Czeslaw Bartkowski on drums and Adam Cegielski on bass. They became, so to speak, common share-holders in this projects and they were all equally interested in its fate. The memorable original was born in the studio; the album was a premiere performance and a general rehearsal at the same time. Regardless of the noble sense of inspiration which always accompanies the creation of something new, it also was necessary to look in the score and overcome purely technical problems. After all, this was not some garden-variety jazz; in this music many unusual situations had to be tackled if Chopin himself was not to be forfeited.

Так что мне попросту некоторое время было ни до джаза, ни до блюза, ни до клуба.
Но теперь я снова с Вами и предлагаю к прослушиванию очередной раритетный диск: запись детского джаз-бенда, который полностью состоит из учеников Ростовской музыкальной школы им. Кима Назаретова.
Когда-то давно эти детишки попросту "взорвали" публику Винницкого джазового фестиваля. Оно понятно, стоит вывести на сцену детей - всё, успех обеспечен, тётеньки умиляются и пускают слезинки, дяденьки тоже начинают прихлопывать в ладошки... Но, поверьте мне на слово - эти детишки брали отнюдь не возрастом, они завоевали публику музыкой.

Предлагаю всем окунуться в атмосферу свинга и биг-бендов. Легендарный оркестр Гленна Миллера, как говорится, комментарии излишни. Итак....

Tis album features 18 top-flight musicians under the baton of Larry O'Brien, then the leader of the touring Glenn Miller Orchestra, only makes it more impressive. What's more, with the quality of the playing, one will be able to make out minuscule elements of the original arrangements that were long obscured on the classic late-'30s/early-'40s Glenn Miller sides. Musicians with an appreciation of these arrangements will probably love this recording, and casual fans should embrace it heartily: these boys swing in 1983 about as well as their predecessors from 41 years earlier did. And the vocal numbers are no exception — in contrast to Columbia Records' mid-'60s efforts to revive the Miller orchestra as a recording unit (which failed not just because of the timing of the project but also the uneven quality of the resulting albums), numbers like "Pennsylvania 6-5000" and "(I've Got a Gal In) Kalamazoo" are as hot here as there were four decades before. And the singers include Mel Tormй and Julius LaRosa (doing a solo) in their ranks. Still, it's the instrumentals that make up the bulk of this album, and on that level it's similarly unimpeachable, at least most of the way through — "Tuxedo Junction" (which includes Dave Grusin sitting in on piano) is so close to the original that it's easy to forget who you're listening to and when they put this track down; and serious listeners should probably hold out for the "Gold Disc" edition or the Japanese version of this CD, which contain a bonus track, "At Last," featuring a trombone solo by Urbie Green that is worth the price of the CD by itself. Now, all of that said, there are a couple of quibbles: the absence of the cowbell on "In the Mood," and the "clever" notion on "Pennsylvania 6-5000" of ending the number with — well, you can guess. This is still one cool, swinging release and, with its virtuoso musicianship, offers many of the same appealing qualities as the original Miller recordings. Bruce Eder, AMG

Один "Караван" чего стоит

Twenty-five at the time of this CD, James Carter had already absorbed much of the tradition. His debut as a leader includes compositions by the classic tenors Don Byas and John Hardee, Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" and even a Sun Ra ballad. He also shows that he has the courage to play completely outside whenever it seems logical to him; in fact on the title cut Carter moves from Gene Ammons and Illinois Jacquet to outbursts a la David Murray in the stratosphere. But most importantly, at this early stage James Carter already had his own sound. He switches between the tenor (his main ax) to alto and baritone, shows self-restraint on the ballads and fills his improvisations with continual surprises. Joined by the supportive pianist Craig Taborn, bassist Jaribu Shahid and drummer Tani Tabbal, James Carter puts on quite a tour-de-force throughout this very impressive set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
