Brent Spiner - Ol' Yellow Eyes Is Back |

 |
Album - Ol' Yellow Eyes Is Back Artist - Brent Spiner Label: Dead Line Release Date - 1991 Genre - Jazz Format/Bitrate - MP3@192 Size 47,3 mb Time - 34 min Yes, this album is by "Data" of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Brent sings mostly standards here, with the exception of one recent song by Randy Newman. Brent has a decent tenor voice, but he can't really sustain a note. Any time he tries to hold a note, there is quite a bit of vibrato. Not Tiny Tim level, to be sure, but still a bit distracting. The main fault with the album is that arrangements by Dennis McCarthy are rather dull and unimaginative. The two songs here that were arranged by John McKinney, on the other hand, are lively and fun. Too bad he didn't arrange the whole album. This album will appeal to Star Trek fans only. Trekkies will be especially interested in "It's a Sin (To Tell a Lie)", which features back-up vocals by LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes and Patrick Stewart, plus a recitation by Stewart. |

Artist - Jorge Lopez Ruiz Album - De Prepo Label - whatmusic.com / Finetunes Year - 1972 Quality - MP3@320 Size - 80 MB Total time - 34:42 This blast from the past, a 1972 classic from Argentinean bassist, Jorge López Ruiz, is hard, if not impossible to beat with its lush, 70's jazz harmonies intercepting something like an electric Miles Davis set in Buenos Aires. Though the psychedelic quality is undoubtedly present, there is an incredible richness, a remarkable dialogue between Ruiz and his quartet which lifts this disc way above its competitors, whether they be dated from the 1970's or today. All these colors and textures which wind and weave within dreamy layers of guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums are penetrated only (and artistically) by the outspoken if not entrancing cry of the sax. Bliss surely awaits you with "De Prepo". This is not to be missed. ~ CD BabyREPOST with new links |

Abbey Lincoln & Stan Getz - You Gotta Pay the Band |

 |
Artist: Abby Lincoln & Stan GetzAlbum: You Gotta Pay the BandLabel: Polygram Records Year:October 22, 1991 Quality APE & CUE Size: 284 Mb Total time - 57:56 Stan Getz is featured on one of his final recordings on this excellent Abbey Lincoln CD; Getz's cool tenor fits in very well with Lincoln's voice, making one wish that they had met up previously. With pianist Hank Jones, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Mark Johnson, and (on two songs) Maxine Roach's viola completing the group, it is not surprising that Lincoln sounds typically inspired. Actually, her version of "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" is a bit of a misfire with its dated lyrics (which should have been modified and altered to fit a female). However, "Bird Alone," Freddie Hubbard's "Up Jumped Spring" (given lyrics by Lincoln), and five of her originals more than compensate. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Keyboardist/guitarist/composer Guillermo Klein's set is certainly wide-ranging. His music includes post-bop soloing, most notably from saxophonist Rodrigo Dominquez and trumpeter Juan Urquiza, some haunting vocalizing, and a few eccentric if catchy rhythmic vamps. Most of the selections are brief, with some being little more than sketches. The singing is fine, although it does not always blend in with the solos, which tend to be more adventurous. The trumpet feature on "La Ultima," which is classical-oriented, is a highlight of this intriguing and unpredictable outing. -- Review by Scott Yanow, AMG. |

Artist: Stefano Bollani & Jesper Bodilsen & Morten Lund Album: Gleda Songs from Scandinavia Genre: Jazz Label: Stunt Records Year: 2004 Format: MP3@224 Size: 91,9 MB Total Time: 57:05 Italian pianist Stefano Bollani has again partnered with the top-flight Danish rhythm section of bassist Jesper Bodilsen and drummer Morten Lund to create something very precious: an hour of emotive music that culminates in the blissful title cut, “Gleda (Joy).” While their previous release, Mi Ritorni In Mente (Stunt, 2004), featured standards with Bodilsen as leader, Gleda, by way of Bollani’s modern arrangements, turns a century of Scandinavian tunes into an improvisational delight. |

Artist: Fabrizio Bosso Album: Rome After Midnight Genre: Jazz Label: Sound Hills Year: 2004 Format: MP3@192 Size: 100 MB Italian post-bop trumpet sensation Fabrizio Bosso was born in Turin in 1973. He started playing at the age of five, studying under his father. The young prodigy graduated from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Turin only ten years later at fifteen. While in school Bosso discovered jazz, playing with a big band and in small combos. Upon graduating he was awarded a scholarship to study at St. Mary's College in Washington, where he continued to pursue his new love of improvisation. Starting in 1993, he garnered a national reputation for his flawless technique and exceptionally personal sound, touring under bandleaders like George Russell, Dave Liebman, and the great Steve Coleman. The next year he won Summertime Jazz's Best Band with his quintet, who were soon to make their recording debut. At the age of 26, Bosso's first album as a bandleader, Fast Flight, came out on Red Records. Impressing critics worldwide, Bosso won the "Miglior Nuovo Talento" (Best New Talent) award, chosen in a survey through the Musica Jazz magazine. His second outing as frontman would be for the Blue Note label in 2007. You've Changed furthered Bosso's reputation as one of the most technically impressive young jazz trumpet talents in the world. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez AMG |

Bill Frisell, Ron Carter, Paul Motian |

 |
Artist: Bill Frisell, Ron Carter, Paul Motian Album: Bill Frisell, Ron Carter, Paul Motian Genre: Jazz Label: Nonesuch Year: 2006 Format: MP3@192 Size: 93,7 MB Bill Frisell created his own terrain when he first combined the doleful sounds of country music with the improvised dialogue of modern jazz. Those elements are in optimum balance here, an empathetic encounter that builds on the chemistry developed between Frisell and drummer Motian in the latter's trio. A corresponding bond with Carter is apparent from the opening "Eighty-one" (co-composed by the bassist for Miles Davis' classic E.S.P.), the trio showing a relaxed yet precise way with time and Frisell and Carter matching pitch bends. That string-band intimacy extends to Frisell's postmodern country as well, adding new and dark dissonances to "You Are My Sunshine," "Pretty Polly," and Hank Williams' "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry," while the group’s approach to Thelonious Monk is just as fresh on "Raise Four" and "Misterioso." More than just another superjam, this is a genuine band, the three musicians subtly commenting on and amplifying one another's nuances, and creating subtle transitions between solos. ~ Stuart Broomer |

Enrico Pieranunzi & Charlie Haden & Paul Motian - Special Encounter |
Music » Jazz |
 |
 |
Artist: Enrico Pieranunzi & Charlie Haden & Paul Motian Album: Special Encounter Genre: Jazz Label: Camjazz Year: 2005 Format: MP3@320 Size: 94 MB Even for seasoned jazz veterans who place a premium on originality, formulas can exert a great appeal. The formula at work on Special Encounter can pretty much be summed up by the name Bill Evans, whose legend as an architect of the modern piano trio rests on the kind of lyrical, bop-tinged ballads and mid-tempo numbers offered here. Joined by a pair of decorated Americans, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian (a member of Evans' groundbreaking turn-of-the-1960s trio), Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi brings his usual elegance and insight to a smart mix of standards such as "You've Changed," Haden staples such as "Waltz for Ruth" and Pieranunzi originals such as the evocative "Secret Nights." If not all that special an encounter, it's certainly an agreeable one: the players, who have hooked up in different settings before, bond as a trio. The mood builds as the musicianship deepens. --Lloyd Sachs |

J.S. Bach. Morimur - Christoph Poppen & The Hilliard Ensemble |

Composer: J. S. Bach Album: Morimur Artists: Christoph Poppen & The Hilliard Ensemble Label: ECM Records Year: 2000, release: 2001 Format: APE Size: 262 MB Amazon.com's Best of 2001 In 1994, explains the booklet that accompanies Morimur, Professor Helga Thoene made the surprising discovery that the monumental "Ciaccona" from Bach's Partita in D minor for solo violin was built around various chorale themes hidden in the music. From the texts of these "secret" chorales and other symbolic musical devices, she deduced that the "Ciaccona" was an epitaph for Bach's wife, Maria Barbara. The revelation might have remained an intriguing (and touching) footnote to Bach scholarship if baroque violinist Christoph Poppen hadn't had the bright idea of taking Professor Thoene's discovery off the library shelves and placing it triumphantly in the concert hall. On this disc, his performance of all five movements of the whole Partita (BWV 1004) is interspersed with the various chorales hidden inside the "Ciaccona," sung with breathtaking precision by the Hilliard Ensemble. The double whammy comes at the end when the "Ciaccona" is performed again, this time with the singers bringing out the secret melodies. Poppen's playing is excellent, both sweet-toned and vibrant, while the Hilliards have never sounded better: the combination of the two is spine-tingling. It is as if Maria Barbara's proper epitaph has finally been realized, and a moving and wonderfully stimulating recording created in the process. --Warwick Thompson |
