Two unrelated small-group sessions from the swing era that were originally recorded for the H.R.S. (Hot Record Society) label are reissued in full on this enjoyable CD. Trombonist Jack Teagarden takes a vacation from his big band to play with an all-star octet that also includes cornetist Rex Stewart, clarinetist Barney Bigard and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. Teagarden sings "St. James Infirmary" and is quite fluent on "Shine." The other set has the unique clarinetist Pee Wee Russell and a different octet (which includes trumpeter Max Kaminsky, trombonist Dicky Wells, tenor saxophonist Al Gold and pianist James P. Johnson) romping on a blues and three Dixieland standards; in addition Russell, Johnson and drummer Zutty Singleton stretch out on "I Found a New Baby" and "Everybody Loves My Baby." This 1989 CD has a sampling of the Victor recordings that featured Bix Beiderbecke. The masterful cornetist is heard on two numbers with Jean Goldkette's Orchestra (including the classic "Clementine"), on 18 of his best selections with Paul Whiteman (including two versions of "When"), and on two cuts from his lone date as a leader in 1930; one can certainly hear Beiderbecke's decline on "Deep Down South." The main reasons to acquire this CD are the Whiteman selections, which include "Changes," "San," "There Ain't No Sweet Man," "Dardanella," "From Monday On" and "You Took Advantage of Me." Bing Crosby and the Rhythm Boys have a few notable vocals, and C-melody saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer is heard from. Overall, this is a fine introduction to Bix's Whiteman days. However, the picture is not really complete, since his 1929 recordings were made for Columbia, and completists will want to opt for more comprehensive sets. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

     I have most of Claude Bolling's Suites. This one to date is my favorite. The pieces on this CD contain many enjoyable melodies. I think this CD merges the classic and jazz sound the best. The transition between the piano and orchestra are very smooth. It is perhaps a little more classical sounding then the others I have. Bolling seems to develop his theme a little bit more then the other suites.

     As high-concept jazz groups go, few have been as fun, laid-back, and boisterous as the Classical Jazz Quartet. Taking classical compositions and transforming them into upbeat jazz anthems, the group isn't afraid to make drastically unique changes to the music they cover. The group first came together when bassist Ron Carter contacted pianist Kenny Barron to work together. Discussing the prospect of covering Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, vibraphonist Stefon Harris and drummer Lewis Nash were soon called in and the group decided to go ahead with the project. Released in 2001, their rendition of the classic Christmas ballet was a playful reinvention that swung hard and fun. A year later, The Classical Jazz Quartet Plays Bach did the same for the 17th century baroque composer.

     Представляю (для тех, кто еще не слышал это чудо) прекрасный диск Жака Лусье "Гимнопедия Эрика Сати" (Erik Satie: "Gymnopedies - Gnossiennes")
     Прекрасный - потому что, безусловный ШЕДЕВР, и это самая скромная характеристика для этой работы, как впрочем, и для самого Жака Лусье.
По моему разумению, Жак Лусье - безусловный ВЕНЕЦ ТВОРЕНИЯ, сейчас таких уже не делают, а то, что "делает" САМ Жак Лусье, в общем-то, не поддается никакому описанию, как впрочем, и классификации. Для его произведений был даже придуман специальный термин JAZZ-CLASSICAL, называется.

     Далее, "несколько слов" о Жаке Лусье, Эрике Сати и "Гимнопедии"...
