2008: Peter Rom Trio-Starstruck
Artist: Peter Rom
Album: Starstruck
Label:Jazzwerkstatt Records
Year/release:2008
Genre:Jazz Rock, Avant-Garde
Format, bitrate:mp3 320kbps
Time:48:29
Size:110.47 MB

What an energy. Had Peter Rom called his latest album "Starkstrom" instead of "Starstruck" it would have been equally adequate. The guitarist from Vienna who is also a founding member of JazzWerkstatt Wien and his Trio recorded a manifesto of integrative and contemporary Jazz Art. Rom is experimenting with styles and compositional techniques, he is improvising with the determination of a man of conviction, his delicate virtuosic technique is outstanding. His music or better his Trios Music is shirt-sleeved straightforward as well as intellectually snobbish There is a good amount of irony and at the same time a playful distance towards the protagonists. Rock influences dont degenerate to stereotypes, quiet ballads are miles away from cheesy sentimentalities. This Trio has been formed six years ago, members are bassist Raphael Preuschl and the drummer Jrg Mikula. Their "interaction battery" is far from being exhausted. They seem to recharge each other and chase through the landscape together with delight and creativity. Much is being said these day about Jazz in the 20th Century and its subsequent lingering illness, Peter Roms work is reassuring and lets you look at the future with optimism, regardless of how this music will then be called. 1978:Evan Parker - Monoceros
Artist: Evan Parker
Album: Monoceros
Label: Incus Records
Year: 1978
Format: FLAC
Size: 232 MB
AMG Rating: 1978:Evan Parker - Monoceros

Evan Parker is a virtuosic solo improviser, and these soprano saxophone recordings, made in England in 1978, are perhaps the next best thing to seeing him perform live. Monoceros is divided into four parts, but each is of comparable sonic quality. Parker uses rapid tonguing techniques and circular breathing to create a sound all his own, marked by the simultaneous intonation of multiple notes. When one listens to Evan Parker, one hears a note as well as all the residual tones around it; each breath ends up sounding like a battle between the different registers of the horn. At various times, Parker's saxophone sounds like dolphin speech, electronic tape squeals, or human murmurs; namely, anything but what it actually is. His language on the instrument is essential listening for anyone interested in acoustic experimental music. The Chronoscope CD version of Monoceros distinguishes itself from other Parker solo recitals by its relatively early recording date, excellent sound quality, and probing, anecdotal liner notes courtesy of Steve Lake.
