1988: Barney Kessel - Red Hot And Blues |

Artist: Barney Kessel Album: Red Hot And Blues Label: Contemporary Records Year: 1988; release: 1988 Format mp3, bitrate: 320 kbs Time: 61:22 Size: 141,62 mb AMG Rating: One of guitarist Barney Kessel's final recordings before a stroke put him out of action, this is an excellent quintet session with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Ben Riley. Three of Kessel's originals (a pair of blues and a bossa nova) alternate with four standards and Laurindo Almeida's dedication to the guitarist ("Barniana") on this well-paced and consistently swinging set; the uptempo version of "By Myself" is a highpoint. - ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

2006: Larry Coryell - Live From Bahia |

Artist: Larry Coryell Album: Live From Bahia Label: Rhino/Cti Records Year: 1992 Release: 2006 Format: flac Time: 51:30 Size: 360 MB(flac, cue + log) Repost with a new flac link from mr. hungaropitecus Nice Afro-Latin set with Coryell on acoustic guitar, recorded in Bahia. The assembled cast includes drummer Billy Cobham, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, and several Brazilian musicians, notably vocalist Dori Caymmi. Ron Wynn, AMG Two years before the release of Paul Simon's GRACELAND and the accompanying increase in awareness of world music, Larry Coryell travelled to Brazil and created this low-key recording in Brazil, which features many native performers--including vocalist Dori Caymmi who is featured on several cuts. Coryell is backed by a 9-piece band, including drummer Billy Cobham (who worked with Miles Davis and John McLaughlin) and saxophonist Donald Harrison, who should have gotten co-billing on this CD in that he has has many solos as Coryell himself. Overall, this is a fairly laid back affair. Coryell does a nice job of blending the local musical influences, but except for the 9-minute "Vera Cruz" that closes the album, the music seldon catches fire. Instead, it too often becomes little more than pleasant mood music. Steve Vrana (Aurora, NE), Amazon.com |

1970: Ben Webster - Wayfaring Webster |

Artist: Ben Webster Album: Wayfaring Webster Label: DayBreak Year: 1970 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kbps Time: 1h:05min:59sec Size: 92+54 mb. AMG rating If you were to look through the jazz libraries of major radio stations in Europe, you would find a lot of high-quality live performances that have never been released commercially. But thankfully, some of those recordings eventually end up coming out on small European jazz labels. A perfect example is Wayfaring Webster, which boasts a Ben Webster set that went unreleased for 30 years. The concert was recorded live in the Netherlands on September 2, 1970, and that recording was played on Dutch radio the following month -- however, it wasn't until late 2000 that the performances became commercially available thanks to Challenge's Daybreak label. Backed by pianist Cees Slinger, bassist Rob Langereis, and drummer John Engels, a 61-year-old Webster is in excellent form during a concert that includes warm, swinging performances of "Sunday," Juan Tizol's "Perdido," and the dusky "Poutin'." As gritty and funky as he was on up-tempo material and 12-bar blues items, he could be quite sentimental on ballads -- and true to form, his ballad playing is as soulful and expressive as ever on "My Romance," "How Long Has This Been Going On," and Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge." This concert doesn't offer many surprises; at 61, the breathy tenor man had nothing left to prove and excelled by sticking with what had worked so well for him in his younger days. Although it falls short of essential, Wayfaring Webster is a fine CD that Webster's serious fans will appreciate. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide |

1973: Eugen Cicero - Cicero In London |

 |
Artist: Eugen Cicero Album: Cicero In London Label: Intercord Year: 1973, release: 1974 Quality: MP3@320 kbps (LP-rip) Size: 89,8 mb (sharebee) Total time: 40:02 A true evaluation of Cicero's creativity requires not only an appreciation of his tremendous technique but also an ability to listen with the heart. Cicero loved music and he loved his audience. He never played for himself, but for his audiences, which he always succeeded in captivating. His careful selection of originals, prior to each performance, was a pure delight not only for the friends of classical music but also for jazz lovers.
It was not easy for critics to categorize Eugen Cicero's playing. The designation 'golden hands', which was attributed to him throughout his career, was an indication that both music lovers and critics valued his consistently high level of performance, especially at times of radical change in the music scene. Even now, the name of Eugen Cicero stands for amazing musical virtuosity, phenomenal rhythmic feeling and an inexhaustibly inventive genius. ~ Lisa Boulton |

1997: Die Like a Dog Quartet - Little Birds Have Fast Hearts, No. 2 |

Artists: Die Like a Dog Quartet Album: Little Birds Have Fast Hearts, No. 2 Label: FMP/Free Music Production Year: 1997; release: 1999 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 Size: 129 mb AMG Rating: This second installment of the Die Like a Dog Quartet's live performances at the 30th Total Music Meeting in Berlin picks up right where the first volume (with two long cuts, "Part 1" and "Part 2") left off, with a first track entitled "Part 3." Leader Peter Brotzmann signals the beginning with a clarinet call, soon answered by trumpeter Toshinori Kondo (who often utilizes electronic effects), and it's not too long before bassist William Parker and drummer Hamid Drake come rolling in. The quartet warms up slowly during this opening number, giving themselves plenty of space between the colors and shading for the first many minutes before things start to heat up and really get going for a few minutes until the quartet drops back into an unhurried, exploratory mode. The second half of this 20-minute improvisation finds them intensifying, with solos from both Kondo and Brotzmann (still on clarinet) during the tail end. "Part 4" matches the first track in both length and dynamics, finds Brotzmann on tarogato and tenor sax, and includes two brief sections where Parker and Drake go it alone. "Part 5" actually opens with a fragment of a bluesy melody from Kondo and Parker has his bow in hand for this number that stays, for the most part, whispery and abstract. The short "Part 6" is a finale during which the quartet plays full force. Little Birds Have Fast Hearts, No. 2 complements the first volume, including more of this quartet's excellent interplay and self-feeding energy. ~ Joslyn Lane, All Music Guide |

1978: Charles Mingus - Me,Myself An Eye |

Artist: Charles Mingus Album: Me,Myself An Eye Label: Rhino /Atlantic Year: 1978; release: 1979 Format mp3, bitrate: 256 kb/s Time: 57:46 Size: 103,43 Mb Charles Mingus did not perform on the final sessions he made for Atlantic toward the end of his life. Too ill with ALS to pick up his bass, he nonetheless was a powerful presence in the studio. The arrangements and orchestrations were realized by trumpeter Jack Walrath based on Mingus's tapes and piano sketches. The huge band can get a bit unwieldy, and the arrangements, which feature a solo from Larry Coryell, do tend to pander a bit to the fusion audience. In spite of these drawbacks, the half-hour "Three Worlds of Drums" is great, overdone though it may be. ~ Stuart Kremsky, All Music Guide |

2008: Gashouse Dave - Blues Trip |

 |
Artist: Gashouse Dave Album: Blues Trip Label: Dixiefrog Release: Jun 30, 2008 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 38 minutes Size: 95MB « Blues trip » is a « back to the roots » album. Dave plays electric and acoustic (dobro) and propose his new songs (as usually) but also some interesting covers coming from Blind Lemon Jefferson (« Please, See That My Grave Is Kept Clean ») or John Lee Hooker (« Highway 13 »), and the legendary « You Took My Money, Now You’re Gone). Nevertheless, the Gashouse Dave’s music reminds us, as always, a kind of strange Hollywood atmosphere with old fashioned journalists in smoky bars, Underwood typewriters, and old Humphrey Bogart movies.~ www.bluesweb.com |
