2010: Jimi Hendrix - Valleys Of Neptune     Artist: Jimi Hendrix
     Album: Valleys Of Neptune
     Label: Experience Hendrix
     Year: April 24 - June 5, 1969; release: 2010

Valleys of Neptune is a posthumous studio album by American blues-rock musician Jimi Hendrix. Released in the United States on March 9, 2010, the album boasts 12 previously unreleased studio recordings," including the title track, one of the most sought after of all of Hendrix's commercially unavailable recordings. The tracks on Valleys of Neptune were largely self-produced by Hendrix, and received extra posthumous production from Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott for Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. Largely recorded in 1969 following the release of Electric Ladyland, the album predominantly features the original lineup of The Jimi Hendrix Experience: vocalist and guitarist Hendrix, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell..

2000: Lyambiko - Out of This Mood
     Artist: Lyambiko
     Album: Out of This Mood
     Label: Nagel-Heyer
     Year: 2000, release: 2002
     Format, bitrate: MP3, 320Kbps
     Time: ~70 Min
     Size: 170 MB

Lyambiko, a jazz vocalist of German-African descent, highlights her affection for standards on this engaging Nagel-Heyer disc. She is backed by a capable, swinging trio, with Marque Lowenthal on piano, Robin Draganic on bass, and Torsten Zwingenberger on drums and percussion. Her voice is deep, mellow-toned, and often playful, bringing freshness (and slightly accented English) to songs like "If I Were a Bell," "Mean to Me," and a pair of Ellington classics, "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me" and "I Ain't Got Nothin' but the Blues." On the modern material she takes more risks -- starting Nat Adderley's "Work Song" a cappella, for instance, then holding a powerful long note toward the end, taking the listener by surprise. Other highlights include a bass/vocal duo on "Gone With the Wind," a Portuguese rendition of "Chega de Saudade," a brief but effective take of "Miss Celie's Blues" (from the soundtrack of The Color Purple), and an African-tinged instrumental piece by Lowenthal called "Parakeet Prowl." ~ David R. Repost with a new link

A great lost album from Stan Getz! The record features Stan in a totally new setting, playing with some relatively unfamiliar French talents -- Eddie Louiss on organ, Rene Thomas on guitar, and Bernard Lubat on drums. Louiss is incredible, and has a free spacey sound that recalls Larry Young -- which works perfectly with Getz's post-Coltrane explorations here. The whole album's a triumph, and a tribute to Stan's never-ending quest for new sounds, despite the fact that labels always wanted him to reproduce his bigger hits. Titles include "Our Kind Of Sabi", "Song For Martine", "Invitation", and "Dum Dum". All tracks are long, and the album's a delightful meeting of European jazz and masterful solo talents!

MCA continued the series of definitive masters of the Jimi Hendrix catalogue in 2000, releasing the self-titled box set The Jimi Hendrix Experience, consisting of four discs. The material includes alternate recordings, live performances and some rarities. Although most of the material had been released in earlier compilations, some previously unreleased material (such as live versions of "Killing Floor" and "The Wind Cries Mary") was also included.
The alternative recordings include some tracks from Hendrix's studio albums, even including some from First Rays of the New Rising Sun. This list includes "Purple Haze", "Highway Chile", "Little Wing", "Gypsy Eyes", "Stone Free", among others. The live songs are taken from performances such as the Monterey Pop Festival, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Isle of Wight and includes a near-complete version of Hendrix in the West.
On some tracks, especially on those from Hendrix in the West, the recordings have been slightly altered to clean up the sound, but even when modifications were made the result does not differ too much from the original masterings.
Another edition of this boxed set was released on 28th November 2005, which, under the Universal music group label, included an exclusive bonus DVD featuring a 30 minute documentary called "Hendrix And The Blues", originally created as part of the 'Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues' series. As well as this, this bonus DVD also includes several Live tracks, including "Johnny B. Goode" which was recorded live at Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, California on May 30 1970, "Red House" and "In From The Storm", both of which were recorded live at Isle Of Wight, England on August 30 1970.

"Vibraphonist Bill Ware — of the Jazz Passengers, Steely Dan, and Groove Collective — sets out to create the most unique tribute to Duke Ellington in history and pretty much pulls it off with just his vibes and ace guitarist Marc Ribot. This pairing on an all-Ellington set seems unusual and it is — in the very best way. Ribot's guitar style, at least since he learned how to play Cuban music, has adapted itself well to Ellington's large harmonic palette and swinging intervallic demeanor, while Ware's lush phrasing and painstaking attention to tonalities and microphonics offer all the warmth and dimensionality necessary to hold the lyrical and atmospheric elements together. The program is from the Ellington/Strayhorn canon; there are no real surprises in the choice of material, with "C Jam Blues," "I Got It Bad," and "In a Sentimental Mood" leading things off. What is immediately noticeable — besides the clear, ringing tones of Ribot's guitar infused with a delicate but decidedly Latin feel, especially in the way he plays the changes through the meter — is the arrangements. Carefully laid out, relaxed, and full of nuance and elegance without florid adornment, Ware and Ribot are naturals. When Ware solos in "Caravan" and in "Mood Indigo," Ribot's fat, brilliantly rhythmic chording offers a wide lyric trough for Ware to enter and move around in. The guitar holds a wide space so Ware can move through the changes with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of taste and feeling. And Ware does the same for Ribot on "Come Sunday," with his wide sevenths and ninths on the vibes all warmed up tonally through an amplifier, as Ribot plays about the middle register, taking the melody one step at a time and turning it into gypsy swing. This is a milestone recording for both players and one of the finer Ellington tributes to come from the composer and bandleader's centennial." ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

2009: Wynton Marsalis - He And She     Artist: Wynton Marsalis
     Album: He And She
     Label: Blue Note Records
     Release: Mar 24, 2009
     Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s
     Size: 159MB

He and She is a full-bodied meditation on love and the complexities of the human heart. The CD is a rich offering of 12 Wynton Marsalis compositions as well as a long poem by Marsalis, interspersed between tracks and then read in its entirety at the end. Marsalis culminated 2007's From the Plantation to the Penitentiary (Blue Note) with a poem and He and She finds him further exploring the marriage between jazz and poetry.
It can be hard to balance music and spoken word, but Marsalis does an admirable job: the disparate segments flow easily into one another, without either overwhelming the other. It helps that "He and She" is a good poem, combining interesting cadences with a wealth of emotions. This richness is reflected in the music, which moves through many moods and jazz styles. Marsalis is joined by first-rate sidemen—Walter Blanding (tenor and soprano sax), Dan Nimmer (piano), Carlos Henriquez (bass) and Ali Jackson (drums)—who are more than capable of bringing his vision to fruition.
The highlights include "The Razor Rim," a 12-minute song featuring tight frontline work between Marsalis and Blanding as well as some nice solo work, including easy, flowing lines by Marsalis and intricate, passionate weaving by Blanding. The short, powerful "Zero" delves into the sadness of losing love; "Fears" is a compelling mood piece with great bass work and "School Boy" is a ragtime-infused tune that features Marsalis' trademark crispness and precision.
He and She is a happy example of the convergence of jazz and spoken word. It will be interesting to see where Marsalis may take this art form in the future.

For many years, Atlantic's treatment of Ray Charles' catalog was a disgrace. They had lots of packages like this single album, a grab bag of various '50s and '60s sessions that didn't give the casual listener any real sense of Charles' greatness and infuriated the true fan. This set and many others like it are no longer necessary, since Atlantic issued the deluxe four-volume edition that contained every significant Ray Charles soul and R&B hit. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

One of the most interesting of the ten volumes released in The Private Collection series, this CD contains "The Degas Suite" (music for a soundtrack of an art film that was never produced) and a ballet score titled "The River." Ellington is mostly the lead voice but his star sidemen are heard from on these formerly very rare and somewhat unusual performances. Clearly his genius was strong enough to fill three lifetimes full of new music and this CD contains some melodies that might have been more significant if he had lived long enough to find a place for them.

Dallas-raised guitarist, singer, and songwriter Mike Morgan formed his blues and blues-rock band in the late '80s, amid that city's still thriving nightclub scene. Morgan, who got his first guitar in elementary school, was inspired to play better guitar after hearing Stevie Ray Vaughan's debut album, Texas Flood, in 1985. He grew up in suburban Dallas listening to the radio and being inspired initially by people like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. Morgan had been playing rock guitar prior to this, but after 1985 he jumped with both feet into playing blues and blues-rock. Although he was motivated and influenced by the late legendary Vaughan, Morgan also cites T-Bone Walker, Magic Sam, and fellow Dallas area musician Anson Funderburgh as influences on his music. After moving to Dallas in 1986, Morgan met vocalist Darrell Nulisch and formed his group the Crawl -- named after a Lonnie Brooks composition -- shortly thereafter. Nulisch took Morgan under his wing and schooled him further with his deep, wide-ranging collection of blues recordings, and the band began to play in venues beyond Dallas/Fort Worth. They performed originals and classic blues, and Nulisch later left the band in 1989. Morgan found a singing replacement with the Kansas City-raised Lee McBee, who also played expert harmonica. The new band made inroads on the blues festival circuit in the early '90s, and one year after the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, fellow Dallas area guitarist Anson Funderburgh took a Black Top Records executive to hear Morgan and the Crawl. Black Top immediately signed Morgan to the New Orleans-based label, and the band found national and international audiences with a slew of releases. Morgan and the Crawl released their debut, Raw & Ready, in 1990, and they followed up with five other albums of spry originals and classic covers, including Mighty Fine Dancin', Full Moon Over Dallas, Ain't Worried No More, Looky Here!, and The Road. In 1994, working with fellow Dallas guitarist Jim Suhler, he released Let the Dogs Run. Later, he released I Like the Way You Work It, also for Black Top. Morgan and the Crawl carved out their reputation in the early '90s with thematically fresh original songs and incendiary live concerts. Morgan continues to tour internationally, and his late-'90s and early-2000s output includes several other fine albums. McBee left the band at the end of 1999 to pursue his own band back home in Kansas. Morgan began singing himself, as well as playing guitar, feeling that he had been well schooled by a procession of lead vocalists who included Nulisch, Keith Dunn, and Chris Whynaught. Texas Man was released in 2000 on the Maryland-based Severn Records label and the follow-up, Live in Dallas, was issued in 2004. Morgan's 2006 release, Stronger Every Day, includes contributions from vocalist/harmonica player McBee as well as guitarist Randy McAllister.

Although brief at just over 42 minutes long, this is a satisfying effort from pianist Kenny Barron. His second Enja release documents a quintet consisting of trumpeter Wallace Roney, tenor saxophonist John Stubblefield, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Victor Lewis. The entire quintet is showcased on four Barron originals, the haunting melody of "Phantoms," the freebop of the title track, the relaxed swing of "Voyage," and the lovely waltz "Lullabye." Barron performs with McBee and Lewis on McBee’s beautiful ballad "Close to You Alone, performs an up-tempo duet with Lewis on Charlie Parker's "Dexterity," and goes solo on Thelonious Monk's "Trinkle Trinkle." Long considered as one of the finest pianists in jazz, Barron's excellent composing skills are also evident on this worthy addition to his discography.

Monty Alexander has had significant success in recent years with his light, jazzy settings of vintage reggae songs, and while surely no one would begrudge him his enjoyable duo performances with guitar great Ernest Ranglin or his swinging updates of old rocksteady love songs, by covering the songs of Bob Marley he's opening himself up to criticism for turning what were meant as militant songs of protest into easy listening for well-to-do Babylonians. On the other hand, just because it's easy to listen to doesn't necessarily mean it's simpleminded: his highlife-flavored introduction to "Africa Unite" segues nicely into a rhythmically tough and surprisingly faithful setting of one of Marley's best repatriation anthems, and his bouncy take on "Simmer Down" nicely recalls the Wailers' wonderful early days as a ska band. But best of all is his quiet but intense arrangement of "Babylon System," a rare interpretation of a Marley song that reveals both the anger and the simple heartache that lie at the center of the song — on "Babylon System" you could hear Marley weeping for the wicked as well as crying out for justice for his people, and that anguish is brilliantly exposed in Alexander's arrangement. Elsewhere, a mento band massacres "Three Little Birds" and the inevitable "War" sheds no new light at all on what was always one of Marley's weakest compositions in terms of pure music, but overall this is an insightful and deeply enjoyable album. - Rick Anderson at All Music Guide

This is one of trumpeter Dizzy Reece's finest recordings, a well-planned sextet date (reissued on CD) with baritonist Cecil Payne, Joe Farrell on tenor and flute, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Charlie Persip that is on the level of a Blue Note album. Reece (who contributed three diverse originals) performs mostly minor-toned songs that seem to really inspire the musicians. The solos tend to be concise but quite meaningful, and, overall, this hard bop but occasionally surprising session is quite memorable. Strange that Reece would not get another opportunity to lead a record date until 1970.
