Keith Jarret & Michala Petri - J.S. Bach: Sonatas for Flute & Harpsichord |
Music |
 |
 |
Artist: Keith Jarret & Michala Petri Album: J.S. Bach: Sonatas for Flute & Harpsichord Label: RCA Release: 1992 Genre: classical Format mp3, bitrate: 256 kb/s vbr Time: 1:10:58 Size: 71,6 Mb If you appreciate Bach or recorder music, this album is a must for you. Keith Jarrett and Michala Petri have put together a series of performances that sound so "right " that you cannot imagine them played otherwise. The recorder playing, especially, is intriguing. Michala produces a sound similar to a flute, but a little darker and more mellow. Recorder, especially for Baroque music, is highly underrated. This is a great addition to any Baroque collection. A superb technical effort combined with an interpretation that lets the spirit of the music shine through. All in all, I rate this CD in the top 5% of my collection. - Boris W. at Amazon.com |

Keith Jarrett - Shostakovich: 24 Preludes and Fugues op.87 |
Music |
 |
 |
Artist: Keith Jarrett Album: Shostakovich: 24 Preludes and Fugues op.87 2cd Label: ECM/Universal Distribution Release: 1991 Genre: classical Format mp3, bitrate: 256 kb/s vbr Time: 2:15:11 Size: 189 Mb + 23,3 Mb (complete full covers) Dmitri Shostakovich's epic series of preludes and fugues for solo piano was inspired by the very composer whom you would immediately suspect — Johann Sebastian Bach. Indeed, the Russian composer was motivated to write this huge work after a visit to Bach's home city Leipzig in 1950; and, in fact, it resurrects the premise behind Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier," providing one prelude and fugue for every major and minor key. So having conquered the Bach work on recordings, Keith Jarrett decided to tackle its 20th century sequel in this two-CD set. Looking at it from one angle, this is Jarrett's most impressive technical achievement in the classical repertoire so far. Generally speaking, the Shostakovich is more difficult to play than the other classical works that he had recorded previously, and he is clearly up to all of its sometimes fearsome demands. From an interpretive angle, though, Jarrett doesn't get as much out of this music as, say, the late Russian pianist Tatiana Nikolaeva, who gave the first performances of the work. With Nikolaeva, each note is captured and spotlighted in ever-changing lights. Jarrett is on the hunt for detail, too — the "No. 11," "15," and "17" fugues are particularly invigorating in that respect — yet much of the time, he tends to color things in one way. Part of this impression may be due to the sound of his piano, which is treated with ECM's usual soft-focused cloud of reverb. For Jarrett fans who are following his classical adventures, this could be a most intriguing left turn, but those seeking the definitive recording of the pieces would find Nikolaeva more stimulating. - Richard S. Keith Jarrett - J. S. Bach: French Suites |
Music |

 |
Artist: Keith Jarrett Album: J. S. Bach: French Suites 2 cd Label: ECM Release: 1993 Genre: classical Format mp3, bitrate: 320 kb/s vbr Time: 1:40:42 Size: 132 Mb Bubu's Rating: Please listen to this performance for yourself; the criticisms of other reviewers on this page seem unfair to me. The accusation that Jarrett has a poor touch on the harpsichord is particularly puzzling; like his other harpsichord recordings, this one is splendid. There are three problems which face us. The first is the harpsichord itself, to many a diabolical instrument which should have become extinct with the invention of the pianoforte. But of course these suites were written for harpsichord and (if that matters to you) piano versions are anachronistic. Another is that Jarrett plays Bach cleanly and with fewer inflections than is the fashion these days. But that is the way many listeners still love to hear Bach played... |

Artists - Sarah Vaughan , Lester Young Album - One Night Stand / The Town Hall Concert Label - Blue Note Year - 1947, release - 1997 Quality - MP3@320 kb/s Size - 137 mb Total time - 64:00 REPOST with a new link This 1997 CD has music from a previously unreleased Town Hall concert. The program is split between the Lester Young sextet and Sarah Vaughan with the two principals only coming together on the final song, "I Cried for You." The recording quality is listenable, if not flawless, and it features the two giants at interesting points in their careers. Tenor great Lester Young sounds excellent on his seven features, but his backup group is sometimes a bit shaky, particularly during uncertain moments on "Just You, Just Me" and "Sunday"; bassist Rodney Richardson does not mesh well with the eccentric pianist Sadik Hakim. The young Roy Haynes is fine, although some of his "bombs" are overrecorded, while trumpeter Shorty McConnell comes across as a second-rate Howard McGhee, sincere but streaky. But the reason to acquire this CD is Sarah Vaughan, who at age 23 was already a marvel; what a voice! Very influenced by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, Vaughan mostly lays way behind the beat during her ballad-oriented performances, swirling between notes like a first altoist and often settling on very unlikely (and boppish) notes. She gives the impression that she could do anything with her voice, and some of her flights (particularly on "Don't Blame Me," "I Cover the Waterfront" and "Mean to Me") border on the miraculous. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist - John Lewis Album: Grand Encounter Label - Pacific Jazz Year - 1956; release:1988 Quality - MP3@320kb/s Size-78 mb AMG Rating: REPOST with a new link Also reissued as 2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West and occasionally listed under tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins' name, this classic session is the ultimate in cool jazz. Perkins' mellow tone matches quite well with the quiet but inwardly passionate playing of pianist John Lewis, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Chico Hamilton. Lewis is featured with the rhythm section on "I Can't Get Started," Hall is added for "Skylark," and the full group plays three standards plus Lewis' memorable (and atmospheric) "2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Leroy Carr Album: Leroy Carr, 21 Blues Giants Label: P-Vine Records/ Japan Year: rec. 1928-32/rel. 1995 Format: Mp 3 @320 kb/s Time: 49:25 Size: 99.7 Mb
To my friends bluesman's in JBC! Please enjoy this very RARE album!
The course of this one disc -- which are sold separately -- Document has collected every song Leroy Carr cut in the late '20s and early '30s. For completists, the compilation is ideal, but there is too much music for casual fans of Carr or pre-war blues. There's important material here, but it is presented elsewhere on better, more manageable collections.

1962: Bob Brookmeyer - Trombone Jazz Samba |

Artist - Bob Brookmeyer Album - Trombone Jazz Samba Label - Verve Year - 1962 Quality - MP3@320 kbps (LP-rip) Size - 62 mb Total time - 28:13 AMG rating Bob Brookmeyer was in the studio just a few months after Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd helped to launch the bossa nova craze in the United States with their hit LP Jazz Samba, but this extremely enjoyable LP didn't come close to matching the success of the earlier album; it may be because the valve trombone is not envisioned as a lush melodic instrument by the average jazz listener in comparison to the tenor sax. Brookmeyer's mellow solos are complemented by the presence of guitarists Jim Hall (who plays all of the solos) and Jimmy Raney, along with vibraphonist Gary McFarland and a trio of Latin percussionists, including Willie Bobo. Luiz Bonfá's "Samba de Orfeu" and "Manha de Carnaval" as well as Antonio Carlos Jobim's "A Felicidade" (all three of which have become standards within the genre) are given imaginative arrangements, but there are a few twists thrown in by the leader. Brookmeyer's catchy "Blues Bossa Nova" works very well, as do his loping bossa nova treatment of Bronislaw Kaper's theme from Mutiny on the Bounty and a hilarious brisk chart called "Colonel Bogey Bossa Nova," a reworking of the well-known song made famous by the film The Bridge on the River Kwai. Long out of print, this album deserves to be reissued by Verve although there are hopefully some unissued tracks, as its brevity (under 28 minutes) is a handicap. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Artist: Bob Kindred Quartet Album: Nights of Boleros and Blues Label: Venus Records Year: 2006 Format, bitrate: FLAC Size: 350 MB The brawny and sexy sound of Kindred's tenor is a perfect match for the mysterious and romantic music. The music transports the listener to a steamy bar in a subtropical country in Latin America. One can almost feel the hot and humid air. Nights of Boleros and Blues is that rare bird in contemporary mainstream jazz that measures up against classic albums of the 1950s and 60s. |

Eddie Rosner was a teenage virtuoso in classical trumpet before joining a successful German hot-jazz band, Weintraub's Syncopators, in 1930. When the Nazis took power, the Jewish musician fled to Poland, opening his own club, Chez Adi, in Lodz. When the Germans occupied Poland, he fled to the Soviet Union, where, during World War II, he performed on the front for the Soviet troops. After the war, the winds turned, and he was arrested as a purveyor of decadent capitalistic music and shipped to Siberia, and did not leave the gulag until Stalin's death in 1954. Touring the Italian peninsula in 1934, Eddie Rosner's 13-piece Polish swing band crossed Louis Armstrong's band, and a trumpet "cutting contest" was arranged. After the contest (which Armstrong won), each artist gave the other a publicity photo. One was dedicated to the "White Louis Armstrong" and the other to the "black Eddie Rosner". |

Artist: Jonathan Kreisberg Album: UNEARTH Label: Mel Bay Records Year: 2005 Release Sep 20, 2005 Genre: Guitar Jazz, Instrumental Format, bitrate: mp3, 224kb/s Time:51:30 Size: 63,5 ÌÁ Maybe it's something in the water. Spend almost any night in New York City and you'll hear some of the world's best young jazz musicians, diverse in style and aesthetic outlook but united in their passion, and often in their near scandalous technical pro An up-and-coming jazz guitarist, Jonathan Kreisberg contributed all eight selections to this program. "Minor Leaps" is a run through the "Giant Steps" chord changes (some of which were altered to minor chords), "Until the Sun Submits" is a lyrical ballad, and "New for Now" is a romp. On "Pacific," Kreisberg's tone sounds a bit like John Scofield although his ideas are original, while on the jazz waltz "Microcosm for Two," he switches effectively to acoustic guitar. "Hobroken" is a 16-bar blues while "Peru" and "Unearth" have complex but logical chord changes and consistently inspired playing. The quintet sounds a bit unusual due to the instrumentation, which has a guitar-trumpet-electric piano front line. Trumpeter Scott Wendholt and keyboardist Aaron Goldberg are strong assets on the set while bassist Matt Penman and drummer Anthony Pincotti play their supportive roles well. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

This talented pianist was born and has received formation in Romania, veins in Germany, has died in Switzerland... It has become famous for magnificent jazz interpretations of classical music. He played classical compositions in a jazzy style in a piano-bass-drums trio. This may sound a bit like the music Jacques Loussier and his trio play but after i listened to another record by Eugene, Spring Song, i find him to be more of a virtuoso than Jacques. And of course everyone have their own style. |

Artist: Billy Higgins Album: Mr. Billy Higgins Label: Evidence Music Inc. (first released on Riza) Year: 1984, released 1985 & 1993 Format: MP3@320 kbit/s Time: 43:56 Size: 103 MB Originally released by the tiny RIZA label, this CD reissue has one of drummer Billy Higgins' few dates as a leader. Actually, Higgins mostly plays a supportive role as usual, backing saxophonist Gary Bias (heard in top form), pianist William Henderson, and bassist Tony Dumas. Bias, Henderson, and William James Lee contributed all of the material, which is fresh, generally modal post-bop. Well worth picking up. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |
