Enrico Pieranunzi Trio - No Man's Land |
Music |
 |
 |
Artist: Enrico Pieranunzi Trio Album: No Man's Land Label: Soul Note (Italy) Release: 1989 Genre: Jazz/Post-Bop Format mp3, bitrate: 320 kb/s Time: 45:00 Size: 103 Mb AMG Rating: Enrico Pieranunzi is a talented pianist greatly influenced by Bill Evans. His sensitive interpay with bassist Marc Johnson (an alumnus of Evans' trio) is impressive while drummer Steve Houghton plays quietly and with great subtlety throughout the fine trio set. Pieranunzi has a romantic streak in his style (best displayed on the classical-oriented "No Man's Land") but he can also cook and swing hard; "Land Breeze" and "If I Should Lose You" are good examples of that side of his personality. The five originals and three standards cover a wide area of emotional ground. Enrico Pieranunzi may not be an innovative pianist but listeners who enjoy Bill Evans' music will certainly like this release. - Scott Yanow at AMG |

1947-1955: Ella Fitzgerald - The First Lady of Song |

Artist: Ella Fitzgerald Album: The First Lady of Song Label: Decca Years: 1947-1955 Format, bitrate: 320 Kbp/s Time: 37:53 Size: 69 MB AMG rating Not to be confused with the Verve triple-CD set of the same name, this LP from 1958 nevertheless has similar aspirations, assembling pieces from nine diverse Decca sessions into an anthology. We hear Ella develop as a pop singer from the lighter-voiced period of the 1940s to a deeper, even more soulful purveyor of ballads by the time she finishes her Decca contract in 1955. By and large, the material is first-rate, including standards like "My One and Only Love" and "I've Got the World on a String," a completely reworked country & western classic "A Satisfied Mind," and even one of Ella's few compositions, the ebullient "Ella's Contribution to the Blues." The settings range from chamber jazz groups with Hank Jones on piano to studio big bands directed by Sy Oliver and Bob Haggart and the plush easy-listening strings of Tutti Camarata. A few of the big band and vocal backings may have dated a bit, but not Ella's contributions. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide |

1977: Sam Jones - Something in Common |

Artist: Sam Jones Album: Something in Common Label: 32. Jazz Records Year: 1977 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 Kbps Time: 62:28 Size: 116 MB The recording session for Muse on September 13, 1977, that produced Sam Jones' Something in Common came only a day before the session that resulted in the acoustic bassist's Xanadu LP Changes & Things. Both albums find Jones leading sextets, although with different personnel. Trombonist Slide Hampton, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, and tenor saxman Bob Berg join Jones on both sessions; however, Something in Common finds Cedar Walton on piano instead of Barry Harris and Billy Higgins on drums instead of Louis Hayes. In the 1970s, Jones' recordings as a leader were quite consistent, and Something in Common is a rewarding example of the type of solid, hard-swinging bop and post-bop that people expected from him. The only Jones piece that the sextet embraces is "Seven Minds"; other selections were written by Hampton ("Every Man Is a King"), Walton ("Something in Common" and the better known "Bolivia"), and Mitchell ("Blue Silver"). Sadly, Mitchell's career was cut short only two years after Something in Common was recorded; in 1979, the Clifford Brown-influenced trumpeter died of cancer at 49. Originally released on vinyl by Muse, Something in Common was reissued on CD in 2000 with three bonus tracks -- "One for Amos," "Shoulders," and Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" are from Walton's Muse release Firm Roots, which was recorded live in Rochester, NY, in April 1974. The group formed by Walton, Jones, and Hayes is essentially a bop trio even though Walton is on electric piano and the musicians are interpreting an R&B/pop hit. This CD is well worth hearing. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide |

1971: James Brown - Sho Is Funky Down Here |

 |
Artist: James Brown Album: Sho Is Funky Down Here Label: Universal International Year: 1971 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 69.2 Мb Given the prodigious number of titles in the James Brown catalog, and the dizzying stylistic madness within the mind of its creator, it is no surprise that there are a number of unexplainable releases. Even within that narrow subsection, Sho Is Funky Down Here stands out: an almost completely unsoulful album -- at least as close as James Brown will ever come, even in his later years -- full of fuzzed-out guitars, poorly recorded drums, and not much else. Brown's highly individual style at the electric piano is the only evidence of his presence on this record at all. That said, after the initial disappointment, and how could it be anything but a disappointment after its title, Sho Is Funky Down Here does provide a few musical highlights, especially the inexplicably titled "Bob Scoward." It is doubtful that any James Brown fan was anything but disappointed after purchasing this album, but it is worth holding onto both for its oddball nature and for the clues into the crazy world of James Brown. ~ Kurt Edwards, All Music Guide |

1978: Al Haig Plays the Music of Jerome Kern |

Artist - Al Haig Album - Al Haig Plays the Music of Jerome Kern Label - IMS Year - 1978, release - 1999 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 93 mb Total time - 41:03 Превосходный пианист, очень рекомендую! An excellent pianist, highly recommend! For this tasteful but obscure set (only reissued on CD by the Japanese Trio label), veteran bop survivor Al Haig plays four unaccompanied piano solos, has four duets with bassist Jamil Nasser, and backs singer Helen Merrill on "They Didn't Believe Me." Although Jerome Kern did not care for jazz, his songs have long been viable vehicles for jazz improvisations, and Haig picked out some of the best ones for the date, including "The Way You Look Tonight," "All the Things You Are" and "The Song Is You." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuideA lost slice of work from pianist Al Haig and a great one too! The date was recorded at the start of the 80s, and features Haig's piano alongside the bass of Jamil Nasser a frequent accompanist for most of the 70s, playing here with no drums at all for rhythm which leaves lots of room for Al to open up on piano! The tunes are all Jerome Kern numbers, but often taken as relatively free vehicles for improvisation still swinging nicely, thanks to Nasser's help but often moving well past the straight melody, with a really fluid feel. Helen Merrill produced the record, and sings on a version of "They Didn't Believe Me" but all other tracks are instrumental, and include "Dearly Beloved", "Yesterdays", "The Way You Look Tonight", "The Folks Who Live On The Hill", and "I'm Old Fashioned". ~ © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc. |
