1982: Arnett Cobb - Live
     Artist: Arnett Cobb
     Album: Live
     Label:Timeless
     Year: 1982, release: 2000
     Style: Soul-Jazz
     Format, bitrate:mp3;320kb/sec
     Size: 100 Mb

Recorded in Holland, this fine live set features veteran tenor saxophonist Arnett Cobb jamming with a European rhythm section (pianist Rein de Graaff, bassist Jacques Schols and drummer John Engels). The tenor always seemed on the verge of exploding and was still in prime form, as can be heard on four basic standards and his blues "Cobb's Idea." A lesser-known but rewarding effort, one of Cobb's best from his later years. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Highly appreciated by the critics and less by the public the duo Liebman Beirach production is much more an experiment than a real musical journey. Recommended for completists, diehard fans and mostly for snobs.

The "free" in the title to Joss Stone's fourth album apparently refers to the neo-singer breaking free from the shackles of her major label, EMI, who apparently have not let Joss be Joss. That this constricting argument happens to be the exact same story line Stone used for 2007's Introducing Joss Stone, the splashy diva power trip meant to unveil the "real" singer, is conveniently forgotten, as is the modern R&B of that makeover, with Joss returning to all the retro-soul of her first two records. The one lingering element of Introducing is a propensity for melisma-laden oversinging, a tic that stands out greatly in the warmer, funkier settings of Colour Me Free!, helping Joss seem somewhat disconnected from the emotional thrust of her music. Still, her raw vocal skills remain impressive, as does her taste in soul, and even if this feels off-kilter, not quite achieving a balance between retro and modernity, it does beat with a messy human heart, one that was subdued on Introducing, so perhaps she did need to break free. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

For aelia!

This CD reissues the first recordings by the legendary Bunk Johnson. Cut in New Orleans on primitive acetates, the trumpeter is teamed with trombonist Jim Robinson and clarinetist George Lewis (both of whom would be in his regular band soon), plus a four-piece rhythm section, for nine numbers. Bunk's playing is primitive, as is Lewis's, but also listenable despite the erratic recording quality. Closing this set are nine minutes of "talking records" that feature Johnson reminiscing about the past. In reality, this release is more important historically than musically; get Bunk's final recordings (on Delmark) first. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

David Liebman formed a quartet dubbed Quest, in partnership with longtime running mate pianist Richie Beirach, after the dissolution of the acclaimed band Lookout Farm. Quest was short-lived, but has been revived with three original members and second-edition drummer Billy Hart, who took over for original drummer Al Foster, for this live in-concert performance, part of a European concert tour in 2005, 15 years after the group split. The specter of John Coltrane, always prevalent in the expressive tenor and instantly recognizable overblown soprano saxophone sound of Liebman, is even more pronounced as his signature. Beirach, always a brilliant modern jazz pianist, digs deeper than ever and shows a mature, thoughtful, less reckless identity while continuing to reinvent phrases and stretch parameters. Both are rarely cliché. With original bassist Ron McClure and drummer Hart, Quest's cats are on a mission to break down barriers and go further beyond what they explored in their previous life. Of the three standards "'Round Midnight" starts with spatial soprano and piano merging to pure energy, "Dark Eyes" gets a modal, lilting 6/8 treatment, surging, swinging hard, and slowing in dynamic repose, while "Lonely Woman" is shaded in eastern Indian elements with Liebman on wood flute. Coltrane's "Ogunde" revels in free no-time with Beirach suggesting Oriental or Middle Eastern motifs, and Hart's near-20-minute "Redemption" defines the reunion, freezing floating time borrowing a phrase from "Lonely Woman" before bopping the bridge, asserting freedom in a long postlude passage, and generally reviving the unique team spirit that made this band initially notable. Perhaps the centerpiece of the performance is "WTC/Steel Prayers," a paean to 9/11. You hear and physically feel the apathetic normalcy, increased tension, sudden impact, palpable panic, smoky aftermath, stunned quietude, and non-plussed disbelief — it's all there. This is a very good representation of what Quest briefly was all about, and on occasion one would hope could remain to be. - Michael G. Nastos at AMG

AMG Rating: Richie Beirach Gregor Huebner George Mraz - Round About Monteverdi

Following early interpretations of the music of Béla Bartók and Federico Mompou, pianist Richie Beirach is once again joined by violinist Gregor Huebner and bassist George Mraz for a series of stunning interpretations of classical music, though most of this CD is devoted to the compositions of early Baroque composer Claudio Monteverdi. The mournful opener, Lamento d'Arianna, is the only remaining fragment of Monteverdi's lost opera Arianna. Beirach opens Don Carlo Gesualdo's Responsorium No. 5 (from his Sabato Sancto) alone, then ducks out as the bowed strings work their magic. Palestrina's Chant opens elegantly, then Mraz switches to a pizzicato line, with Huebner gradually making his way from the outer fringes, with Beirach eventually adding a passionate improvisation. Beirach's moving improvisation of Monteverdi's Orfeos Lament is spacious, followed by a brief fantasy upon the theme featuring wild pizzicato violin and occasionally hand-muted piano in an intense setting. Mraz, who assisted Beirach and Huebner with their arrangements, is solely responsible for Fantasy on Fili Mi, Absalon, a composition by Heinrich Schütz. Rarely heard unaccompanied on bass, Mraz makes the most of this opportunity with a powerful effort. No exploration of Baroque music is complete with venturing into the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, and Mraz's solo improvised introduction to Siciliano is every bit as powerful. He accompanies Beirach's brilliant improvisation, though the theme is never stated until Huebner joins in, taking the music down paths its composer could have never imagined. This outstanding release will cause more than a few jazz fans to search out classical recordings of these timeless works if they aren't already familiar with them. - Ken Dryden at All Music Guide

Музыка близка к 20-30 годам джазовых ансамблей, таких как King Olivers Creole Jazzband, Louis Armstrong's Hot Five, Jelly Roll Morton, and Bix and his Gang.
