Artist: Big Brother & The Holding Company Album: Cheap Thrills (bonus tracks) Label: Columbia/Legacy Year: 1968 Release: 1999 Style: blues-rock Format, bitrate: Mp3 256 kb/s Time: 55:37 Size: 114 Mb (full covers) WOODSTOCK - 40 YEARS ANNIVERSARY DAY TWOIn the mid-'90s, Sony Music began remastering and upgrading many of the classic albums in their library, and Cheap Thrills got the bonus-track treatment in 1999. The major-label debut of Janis Joplin, the original LP was one of the most eagerly anticipated, and one of the most successful albums of 1968. Joplin and her band Big Brother & the Holding Company had earned extensive press notice ever since they played the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, but for a year after that their only recorded work was a poorly produced, self-titled album that they'd done early in their history for Mainstream Records; it took the band and the best legal minds at Columbia Records seven months to extricate them from their Mainstream contract, so that they could sign with Columbia... |

Oscar Peterson - The Jazz Soul of Oscar Peterson/Affinity |

 |
Artist: Oscar Peterson Album: The Jazz Soul of Oscar Peterson/Affinity Label: Verve Year: 1959, 1962 Release: 1996 (CD) Format, Bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps Time: 74:23 Size: 171 MB AMG Rating: This 1996 single-CD reissues the complete contents of two former LPs by the Oscar Peterson Trio (consisting of pianist Peterson, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen) in 1959 and 1962. Although the pianist is virtually always the lead voice, Brown and Thigpen both make strong (if subtle) contributions to the music. Highlights include "Liza," "Con Alma," "Waltz for Debby," Brown's "The Gravy Waltz" and "Yours Is My Heart Alone." An above-average release (and rather generous at 74 minutes) from the much-recorded Oscar Peterson. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie - Diz'n Bird At Carnegie Hall (1947) |

Artists - Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie Album - Diz'n Bird At Carnegie Hall Label - Roost Year - 1947, release - 1997 Quality - MP3@320 kb/s Size - 156 mb Total time - 73:14 REPOST with new link Nine years after Benny Goodman's groundbreaking concert, bebop finally came to Carnegie Hall. Most notable on this 1997 CD (which contains music that has been reissued many times, often incoherently) is the meeting between altoist Charlie Parker and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. Joined by the underrecorded piano of John Lewis, bassist Al McKibbon and the slightly overrecorded drums of Joe Harris, Bird and Diz generate some real fireworks on five songs, and Parker's rendition of "Confirmation," and the CD's high point, is definitive and memorable. The remainder of the set (ten selections including "Cool Breeze," "One Bass Hit," "Cubano-Be, Cubano-Bop" and "Things to Come") features the Gillespie big band in typically spirited form. Of particular interest are a few numbers ("Relaxin' at Camarillo," which was arranged by George Russell, "Hot House," and "Toccata for Trumpet") that were never recorded in the studio by the big band. Classic bebop. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Eddie Condon Album: Bixieland Label: Columbia (Original) Membran Music (Reissue) Year: Apr 20, 1955 - Apr 22, 1955 Release: 2005 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kb/s Time: 39:48 Size: 129Mb Although a tribute to the music of the legendary cornetist Bix Beiderbecke, the ten selections on this 1955 LP are really jam sessions with no attempt to recreate Beiderbecke's recordings or solos. Condon's band on this occasion features Wild Bill Davison or Bobby Hackett on cornet, trombonist Cutty Cutshall, Dick Cary on alto horn, clarinetist Edmond Hall and a fine rhythm section. Highlights include "At the Jazz Band Ball," "I'll Be a Friend with Pleasure," "Fidgety Feet" and "Royal Garden Blues." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Jazz at the Philharmonic Album: Jazz at the Philharmonic at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1975 Label: Pablo/OJC Release: 1975 Style: bop Format, bitrate: Mp3 256 kb/s Time: 48:07 Size: 76,8 Mb (covers) AMG Rating: Norman Granz and Pablo Records took over a large segment of the 1975 Montreux Jazz Festival and many recordings resulted. This particular CD is a colorful reissue featuring trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Clark Terry, Zoot Sims on tenor, altoist Benny Carter, guitarist Joe Pass, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Keter Betts, and drummer Bobby Durham performing four fairly lengthy renditions of standards. Everyone is in fine form, but it is the joyful playing of the two complementary but contrasting trumpeters (both of whom can be immediately recognized in a note or two) that makes this a recommended set for fans of straight-ahead jazz. - Scott Yanow at AMG |

Artist: Sean Jones Album: The Search Within Label: Mack Avenue Records Year: 2009 Quality:mp3, 320 kb/s Size: 138.08 MB AMG Rating: Beginning with his Mack Avenue Records debut in 2004, Eternal Journey, trumpeter-bandleader Sean Jones has embarked on a series of quests, passionately plumbing the depths of different wellsprings of his life as a musician. Recorded when he was 24, Eternal Journey was his awakening, ”my first step out into the recording world,” Jones says.
That was followed by more steps as well as leaps, with the theme of personal navigation at the center of his vision. Jones has developed into one of jazz’s top young trumpeters, known for both his lyrical fluidity and high-tier technical facility. ”The idea of being on a journey has been in line with all my albums,” he says. ”My second album, Gemini, explored both sides of my musical loves, r&b and jazz. I expanded that with Roots, where I revisited my youth and paid tribute to gospel. And then on Kaleidoscope, I created a collage of sounds, exploring different timbres by enlisting vocalists to be collaborators.” ~ Mack Avenue Records |

Artist: Kristin Asbjornsen Album: The Night Shines Like The Day Label: Universal Year: 2009 Quality: mp3, 320 kb/s Size: 102 MB This album is all about loss and belonging – a journey of hope, embrace and transforming moments of life. Kristin wrote the songs at the piano; but along the way the music developed within a haunting and distinctive ensemble sound, where West-African guitars blend creatively with the cello and piano. The arrangements are coloured by Kristin’s interpretations of African American spirituals on the critically acclaimed album ‘Wayfaring Stranger’, as well as her long term duo work with Tord Gustavsen. And they show traces of old gospel hymns and the West African danceable approach. The album is produced by Jostein Ansnes, and Nils Petter Molvær (trumpet) and Sizwe Magwaza (vocals) is also participating on the album. Kristin says: ”I invited some of the musicians that have been very important to me during the past years. I feel humble and I am touched by the way they have approached my songs, with such powerful musical performances and with so much beauty.” ... |

Artist: King Pleasure Album: Golden Days Label: Original Jazz Classics Original Release Date: June 14, 1960; Release: July 1, 1991 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kb/s Time: 31 minutes Size: 71.5 MB This CD reissue (one of three King Pleasure sets that together contain all of his recordings) has an LP-length session from 1960 (originally put out by HiFi Jazz) that is dominated by spirited remakes of past glories. The vocalese singer revisits such songs as "Moody's Mood for Love," "Don't Get Scared," and "Parker's Mood" with the assistance of tenors Teddy Edwards and Harold Land and pianist Gerald Wiggins. Worth picking up, although the other two King Pleasure releases are generally on a higher and more creative level. ~ Review by Scott Yanow, AMG. |

Artist: Betty Bennett Album: Nobody Else But Me Label: Atlantic AMCY-1065 Year: 1955, release: 1991 Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 192 MB & 82 MB Time: 37:33 AMG Rating: Nobody Else But Me illuminates the dark corners of romance with rare depth and maturity--Betty Bennett's sultry, knowing vocals further establish the palpable feeling that this is a record for adults. Shorty Rogers and Andre Previn share arranger duties, and both operate in a framework emphasizing nuance and restraint, enabling Bennett to articulate her tales of love and loss without embellishment or redundancy--equal parts stylist and storyteller, she fully inhabits relatively little-known songs like "This Is the Moment" and "Treat Me Rough." ~ Review by Jason Ankeny, AMG. |

So, when they decided to release a "complete recorded works" box set a year later, the results weren't quite as revelatory as they may have been, since even if this was remastered again, it's hard for most listeners to notice the difference between this and the previous material, and all the liner notes — |
