Charlie Ventura was one of the protagonists of the Bop, whose motto is: "Bop for the people" - and that often included the singing of Buddy Stewart or Jackie & Roy A. His secret love, however, was the Big Band
Most of the music on this CDs from tenor saxophonist Charlie Ventura was formerly scarce. That is certainly true of his RCA recordings that feature his short-lived big band performing seven Duke Ellington compositions. While some of the solos are conventional, the arrangements of George Williams and particularly George Russell are certainly unusual in spots, quite impressionistic. In 1950 Ventura had another big band that also did not last.
On this excellent set (reissued on CD by Blue Note), McCoy Tyner had the opportunity for the first time to head a larger group. His nonet is an all-star aggregation comprised of trumpeter Lee Morgantrombonist Julian Priester, altoist James Spaulding, Bennie Maupin on tenor, the French horn of Bob Northern, Howard Johnson on tuba, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Joe Chambers in addition to the pianist/leader. Tyner debuted six of his originals, and although none became standards (perhaps the best known are "The High Priest" and "All My Yesterdays"), the music is quite colorful and advanced for the period. Well worth investigating. [The 2004 Rudy Van Gelder Edition does not contain any bonus material. It does, however, feature wonderfully remastered sound in 24-bit resolution transferred from the original two-track analog tapes. It replaces the earlier CD issue.] ~ Scott Yanow, AMG
Artist: Takehiro Honda Album: I Love You Released: 1969 Label: Trio Records Quality: mp3 CBR 320 kbit/s Size: 88 MB
Ray Bryant ...
Director: Fred Waller Title: Symphony in Black: A Rhapsody of Negro Life Year: 1935 Film studio: Paramount Pictures Genre: Musical Video Language: English Video: AVI, 1430 Kbps, 24.0 fps, 576x432 (1.33:1), DivX Audio: AC3 384 Kbps, 48 kHz Time: 9 min Size: 124 Mb
This film of extraordinary historic and esthetic interest features Duke Ellington at the piano presumably composing the title symphony, crosscut with shots of a band playing the music. Includes the numbers "Jealousy", and the four parts of the composition in order: "The Laborers", "A Triangle (Dance, Jealousy and Blues)", "A Hymn of Sorrow" and "Harlem Rhythm". In the second part an uncredited 18-year old Billie Holliday sings the blues while watching a couple dancing Lindy Hop in silhouette behind a window shade. Dancers are not credited but Terry Monahan of the Jiving Lindy Hoppers suggests that they are "SnakeHips" Tucker and Bessie Dudley. Also on the film is the eccentric dancer (that's a style, not an opinion) Earl "Snakehips" Tucker demonstrating his gifts in an appropriately surrealistic film sequence.

I bring to your attention a double album of one of my favourite domestic jazz pianists-improvisators. "Reminiscences" have been written down by firm "Melody" in 1980. On disks records of "live" performances of Leonid Chizhik in a concert hall "Warsaw" (Moscow) and in the Leningrad chapel (December 1979 - May 1980) are collected.

WOODSTOCK - 40 YEARS ANNIVERSARY
Woodstock: Three Days of Peace & Music - The Director's Cut comes to DVD in a somewhat disappointing, no-frills transfer of the VHS version that was released in 1994. Though it goes without saying that the film is an important document of what made the '60s the '60s, the disc's lack of extra features even some biographies or discographies would have been nice and somewhat muffled audio don't do the documentary justice. However, for many fans of the artists included in the concert, such as the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Canned Heat, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana and Crosby, Stills, and Nash, owning their Woodstock performances on DVD is reason enough to own the film on disc. Since the DVD of Woodstock: Three Days Of Peace & Music was released in 1997 when the technology was still proving and defining itself, it's possible that a deluxe, updated edition of the disc could match the quality of the film itself. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

Artist: Various Artists Album: David Merric Presents Pearl Bailey in Hello, Dolly! Label: RCA Victor Year: Nov 17, 1967 Release: 1991 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 44:14 Size: 96 MB
This is the recording of the all-Black cast that took over the show more than three years into its run, with Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway in the lead roles. Though less accomplished than the original, it is notable for Bailey's individual interpretation of Dolly. Bailey was sadly underrecorded during her career, and this is a highlight of what little there is.
~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
Hello, Dolly! is a musical with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart, based on Thornton Wilder's 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which Wilder revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955.
Hello, Dolly! was first produced on Broadway by David Merrick in 1964, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical and nine other Tonys. The show album Hello, Dolly! An Original Cast Recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.[1] The show has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits, enjoying three Broadway revivals and international success. It was also made into a 1969 film that was nominated for seven Academy Awards.

WOODSTOCK - 40 YEARS ANNIVERSARY DAY ONE
Collector's Choice Sweetwater is the only Sweetwater album to feature Nanci Nevins on vocals throughout, and it's hard to get a grip on. Sometimes it's attractive Californian folk-pop-psych not too far removed from the Mamas & the Papas, as on "Through an Old Storybook"; sometimes it's trying for a rock-Baroque-classical-jazz fusion, although the material doesn't match the ambitions of the arrangements. Whether intentionally or otherwise, Nevins' vocals often recall those of Grace Slick, though she isn't as good. On "My Crystal Spider," they seem to be going for a far-out psychedelic sound; the ascending and descending bit of harsh electronics in the middle sounds uncomfortably close to effects employed, earlier and to more effective use, by the United States of America on "Hard Coming Love." When bands, even on their first album, make multiple comparisons to more renowned acts so inevitable that these form the bulk of a review, it's a good indication that the musicians were not in the same league as those they were trying to emulate. - Richie Unterberger, AMG

Artist: Screamin’ Jay Hawkins Album: At Last Release: 1998 Format, bitrate: mp, 320 kbps Size: 103 MB
"These 1997 recordings are among Screamin' Jay Hawkins' last sessions. After various pairings with sub-par backing or producers who weren't the optimum choice, AT LAST is a winner, produced by Jim Dickinson at Sam Phillips Recording Service in Memphis. In drummer Roger Hawkins and bass player David Hood, Hawkins has one of the best rhythm sections he's had in years. The dozen originals stay close to Hawkins' favored bluesy and soulful grooves, with the subject matter sticking to his usual themes of voodoo, cheating, and bodily functions." Swaptree.com

Guitarist Herb Ellis still considers this to be one of his personal favorite recordings. Ellis was reunited with his old boss Oscar Peterson and, with the assistance of Peterson's trio of the period (with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham), the two lead voices often romp on the jam session-flavored set. Most of the chord changes are fairly basic (including three blues and "Seven Come Eleven"), and Peterson was clearly inspired by Ellis' presence (and vice versa).

Artist: Frank Sinatra Album: Moonlight Sinatra Label: Reprise Year: 1965 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 Kbps Time: 32:39 Size: 66,7 MB
Driven by a set of lush, sparkling Nelson Riddle arrangements, Moonlight Sinatra is a low-key, charming collection. Although the basic concept is somewhat nebulous -- all of the songs have the word "moon" in the title -- Riddle wrote a series of charts that suggest a warm, lovely evening with a variety of tones and moods, from light Latin rhythms to sweet ballads. While the album is a minor entry in Sinatra's catalog, it is nevertheless an enjoyable, romantic listen. Half of the songs on Moonlight Sinatra were originally associated with Sinatra's idol Bing Crosby, making the album something of a loose tribute. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG
Artist: Richie Havens Album: Mixed Bag Label: Verve Records Release: 1967 Format, bitrate: mp3б 320 kb/s Time: 38:21 Size: 94,0 Mb (covers) AMG Rating:
WOODSTOCK - 40 YEARS ANNIVERSARY DAY ONE
Richie Havens' finest recording, Mixed Bag captures the essence of his music and presents it in an attractive package that has held up well. A close listen to lyrics like "I Can't Make It Anymore" and "Morning, Morning" reveals sadness and loneliness, yet the music is so appealingly positive that a listener actually comes away feeling uplifted. In fact, on most of the songs on this album, it's the sound of Havens' distinctive voice coupled with his unusual open-E guitar tuning, rather than the specific lyrical content of the songs, that pulls the listener in. The six-and-a-half minute "Follow" is structured like a Dylan composition in the "Hard Rain" mode, with its memorable verse-ending refrain, "Don't mind me 'cause I ain't nothin' but a dream." Both "Sandy" and "San Francisco Bay Blues" have a jazzy feel, while the aforementioned "I Can't Make It Anymore" would not have been out of place in a movie soundtrack or pop radio playlist of the time. "Handsome Johnny," one of Havens' best known songs as a result of the Woodstock film, is a classic anti-war ballad, stoked by the singer's unmistakable thumb-chorded guitar strumming. Mixed Bag winds up with a soulful cover of Dylan's "Just Like a Woman" and an electric piano-propelled take on the Lennon-McCartney classic, "Eleanor Rigby." - Jim Newsom, AMG

The compositions of Dustin O’Halloran’s second album Piano Solos Vol. 2 are in overlapping Classical and Romantic styles of Western classical music (thanks wikipedia.org) These beautiful songs gentle cadences are more Philip Glass (”Opus 28”) than Tchaikovsky, seamlessly tied together like a fifty-minute block of K-MOZART 105.1. O’Halloran, a part-time foley artist and half of the L.A. band Devics, consonantly brings it like Achille-Claude ”Don’t call it impressionist music” Debussy (”Opus 22”) and throws it down with Ludwig van ”Morrissey was deaf” Beethoven toddling towardliness - with the nimble notes doing somersaults, first hesitantly then playfully (oh ”Opus 21”). Piano Solos Vol. 2 is O’Halloran’s original work. The words ”NME’s Godlike Genius Award” come to mind. ...
