Yellowjackets featuring Mike Stern - Lifecycle |

 |
Artist: Yellowjackets featuring Mike Stern Album: Lifecycle Label: Heads Up Release: 2008 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 1:02:43 Size: 150 Mb (cover) If the Yellowjackets needed a guest guitarist, who would be the best person for the job? Pat Metheny would be an excellent choice, as would Al di Meola, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, or John Scofield. Well, the Yellowjackets did hire a guest guitarist for Lifecycle — an excellent and well-known guitarist, in fact — and they feature him extensively on this 2008 release. The guitarist is Mike Stern, who enjoys a strong rapport with the Yellowjackets' 2008 lineup: Russell Ferrante on acoustic piano and electric keyboards, Jimmy Haslip on electric bass, Bob Mintzer on tenor and soprano sax and bass clarinet, and Marcus Baylor on drums and percussion. . . . |

B.B. King - Blues Summit |

Artist: B.B.King Album: Blues Summit Label: MCA Records Year: 1993 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kbps Size: 134 MB "Blues Summit" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Traditional Blues Album." "Blues Summit" âîçâðàùàåòñÿ ê ôîðìàì ñòàíäàðòîâ, êîãäà Êèíã ïåë â äóýòàõ ñ ðàâíûìè ïî ïîëîæåíèþ èñïîëíèòåëÿìè (John Lee Hooker, Etta James, Fulson, Koko Taylor). On this release, King comes close to equaling his past triumphs on small independent labels in the '50s and '60s. He's ditched the psuedo-hip production fodder and cut a 12-song set matching him with blues peers. His duets with Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Albert Collins are especially worthy, while the songs with Koko Taylor, Ruth Brown, and Irma Thomas have some good-natured banter and exchanges, as well as tasty vocals. The master gives willing pupils Joe Louis Walker and Robert Cray valuable lessons on their collaborations. There's also a medley in which King invokes the spirit of his chitlin circuit days, taking the vocal spotlight while his Orchestra roars along underneath. - Ron Wynn |

Jackie McLean - It's Time! |

Artist: Jackie McLean Album: It's Time! Year: 1964 Label: Blue Note Format: MP3 @320kbps Size: 101 mb REPOST with a new link Recorded in 1964, Jackie McLean's It's Time was only available on CD in the United States as part of a four-disc Mosaic set of his complete Blue Note recordings between 1964-1966. The band here includes trumpeter Charles Tolliver, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Roy Haynes. The music was written entirely by either Tolliver or McLean and walks the line between modal post-bop and free jazz. It came hot on the heels of McLean's first forays into these waters on 1963's One Step Beyond and Destination Out!. There is more to it than that, of course; chordal improvisation still plays a large part in the music on this fine record. Hancock's solo on the opening "Cancellation" is the most angular thing here, and the tempo is simply breathtaking. McLean's butt funky "Das' Dat," which follows, owes a debt to Horace Silver to be sure, but the blues element, which is in the tune's head, is pure Jackie McLean. . . . |

A Guitar Supreme: Giant Steps in Fusion Guitar |

Artist: Various Artists Album: A Guitar Supreme: Giant Steps in Fusion Guitar Label: Tone Center Release: 2004 Genre: jazz/fusion Format, bitrate: mp3 320 Time: 1:01:04 Size: 148 Mb (full covers) Given the label and roster here, one should have a good idea of what's in store for Guitar Supreme: Giant Steps in Fusion Guitar: fusion guitar giants performing well played, immaculately produced songs written or popularized by John Coltrane. And that's what it delivers, but while some of the performances are impressive, the overall sound seems to place more emphasis on technique and production than the spiritual passion embodied by Coltrane. Each player is backed by electric bass, drums, Hammond organ and rhythm guitar, giving each song an almost-funky smooth jazz vibe. |

Artist: Mathias Eick Album: The Door Year: 2008 Label: ECM Records Format: mp3@320/ FLAC+cue Size: 93+21 MB / 115+105 MB (with scans)REPOST with new links for lossless Îòëè÷íûé äåáþòíûé ñîëüíûé àëüáîì íîðâåæñêîãî òðóáà÷à, ïîëó÷èâøåãî ”The International Jazz Award for New Talent 2007”, èãðàâøåãî ñ Manu Katché, Chick Corea and Pat Metheny è â ãðóïïå Jaga Jazzist. Ñîâðåìåííûé ñåâåðíûé äæàç â äóõå ECM. It seems strange that The Door on ECM is 29-year-old trumpeter/composer Mathias Eick's debut album as a bandleader. Strange because despite his age, Eick has appeared on over 50 recordings already, five of them — not including this one — for ECM in the last four years. But it's not only that Eick is, like many of his generation in Norway, a very diverse musician whose tastes run from jazz to club to rock & roll to funk, it's more that these are all traditions that are opening up to one another in new ways in the 21st century (in Europe at least). Some evidence is in his choice of companions on The Door. Veteran pianist and fellow ECM labelmate Jon Balke is here, as is bassist and guitarist Audun Erlien (a member of Eivind Aarset's recording and touring groups), drummer Audun Kleive, who plays with Balke and Jan Garbarek's groups as well as performing on the Terje Rypdal/Ronni Le Tekrø albums, and the nearly ubiquitous multi-instrumentalist Stian Carstensen on pedal steel on three of the set's eight tunes. . . . |

Artist: Jeff Berlin Album: In Harmony's Way Label: MAJ/Rock Empire Release: 2001 Format, bitrate: mp3, 256 kb/s Time: 1:04:11 Size: 73,4 Mb Jeff Berlin is best known as a fusion-oriented electric bassist with phenomenal chops. This CD therefore should be a surprise to both his fans and the jazz world in general, for much of the music is actually straight-ahead. Berlin plays brilliantly throughout the set, featuring guest vibraphonist Gary Burton on "This Is Your Brain on Jazz," welcoming guitarist Mike Stern and Dave Liebman (on soprano and tenor) to three numbers apiece (both are on "Runaway Train"), featuring both keyboardist Clare Fischer and the voice of Steve Shephard on "Pale Gilder," and utilizing pianist Richard Drexler and drummer Danny Gottlieb as his core unit. Eight of the nine selections are by Berlin and these range from heated jams to tasteful ballads. Overall this is the most rewarding jazz recording of Berlin's career. - Scott Yanow, AMG |

Associated Press.Âå÷íàÿ ïàìÿòü! BOSTON – Jazz composer George Russell, a MacArthur fellow whose theories influenced the modal music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, has died. His publicist says Russell, who taught at the New England Conservatory, died Monday in Boston at age 86 of complications from Alzheimer's. Associated Press.Rest in Peace!
Artist: George Russell Album: Ezz-thetics Label: Riverside/OJC Year: 1961 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 42:59 Size: 99,1 Mb This is a true classic. Composer/pianist George Russell gathered together a very versatile group of talents (trumpeter Don Ellis, trombonist Dave Baker, Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet, bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Joe Hunt) to explore three of his originals, "'Round Midnight" (which is given an extraordinary treatment by Dolphy), Miles Davis' "Nardis," and David Baker's "Honesty." The music is post-bop and although using ideas from avant-garde jazz, it does not fall into any simple category. The improvising is at a very high level and the frameworks (which include free and stop-time sections) really inspire the players. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |
