Italian jazzista Enrico Rava's love for Miles Davis' music drove him to trumpet and flugelhorn, and he got his official start in 1964 scoring soundtracks with Argentine saxophonist Gato Barbieri before releasing his own album two years later. Rava hasn't paused to take a breath since, and was the lucky 13th (and first Italian) to bag the prestigious JAZZPAR Prize, which is grudgingly doled out to jazz laureates each year. The mostly-Danish JAZZPAR 2002 Sextet features Rava's long-time American colleague John Abercrombie and is entitled Happiness Is As if you had to guess.. . .
Artist: Gabriela Anders Album: Bossa Beleza Year: 2009 Label: Phantom Format, bitrate: mp3, 256 kbps Size: 84.6 MB
The new Gabriela Anders CD, "Bossa Beleza" , blends her own immediately recognizable sound with that of her first musical love, classic Bossa Nova. Eleven soulful and intimate tracks, including the Brazilian standards "Dindi", "Folhas Secas", "One Note Samba" and "Agua de Beber", as well as Gabriela's take on the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" and Earth, Wind and Fire's "September," plus three original songs, are all infused with the beautiful Bossa Nova sound so famously popularized in the US during the 60s by artists including Antonio Carlos Jobim, Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto. Gabriela is happy to have finally documented her own vision of a style that was so much a part of her own musical development, and that she continues to feel such an affinity for.. . .
Artist: Oscar Peterson Album: The First Recordings Label: Indigo records Year: 1945 - 1946 Release: 1997 Format, bitrate: mp3, 256 kb/s Time: 48:24 Size: 73 Mb
EVERY DAY IS AN OSCAR PETERSON DAY !
As a then-undiscovered Canadian jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson cut these trio dates in Montreal between 1945-1947. They are also available with much more detailed studio information on the Classics label. In many instances during these 16 sides of interpreted swing-to-bop standards, you hear a more deliberate pianist than the one who would shortly thereafter become a recognized freewheeling virtuoso. He does cut loose on the boogie-woogie barnburner "The Honeydripper" and his get-down version of Dvorák's Humoresque. Without question this is an important document, a prelude to his infinite genius, and is easily recommended. ~ Michael G. Nastos at AMG
Artists - Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis & Johnny Griffin Album - Tough Tenors Again 'N' Again Label - MPS Year - 1970 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 80,4 mb Total time - 39:39 AMG rating:
Tenors Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin, who co-led a popular group in the early '60s, had a reunion for this European session originally put out by the MPS label. Assisted by pianist Francy Boland, bassist Jimmy Woode and drummer Kenny Clarke, the two tenors battle it out on a few uptempo pieces and show off their warm tones on Griffin's ballad "When We Were One" and "If I Had You." This album, which contains plenty of colorful music, is currently difficult to find.
Artist: Claire Martin Album: Secret Love Year: 2004 Label: Linn Records Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kbps Size: 119 MB
Despite this being her tenth album it is the first one that I ve heard in its entirety and, on my initial listen, it became clear that I have been missing something special. Her voice is distinctive and displays an impressive range on a variety of material. It is soulful, in a meaningful sense of that word, and is imbued with tones that show she is well schooled in many aspects of jazz and blues. Her choice of songs suggests that she is comfortable with both standards and contemporary lyrics, though there is a clear inclination to the former here. She tackles the varied tempi with assurance, even the breakneck Cheek To Cheek , though I personally prefer her reading of a mid-tempo tune such as The Meaning Of The Blues where the colours provided by Laurence Cottle s bass and Gareth Williams electric piano complement her interpretation perfectly. Whilst this is obviously Martin s album, the musicians she has picked are more than just sidemen. Nigel Hitchcock s fluid alto on the title track, Jim Mullen s superb guitar understatements on But Beautiful and the unexpected but inspired choice of Melvin Duffy s pedal steel guitar on Jive all demonstrate how the judicious use of a certain instrument can add an extra layer or dimension to a song. And Mullen s guitar also provides a wistfully elegant accompaniment to Martin s sensitive take on Where Do You Start . Her voice is really at its finest on a track like this where she lingers on the bittersweet, end of the affair lyrics and holds those clear notes so effortlessly. Something similar is in evidence on My Buddy where the slightly husky tones of her voice make the spine tingle and the restraint of Clark Tracey s drums is the ideal partner for Bobby Wellins languorous tenor saxophone solo. This cd has opened my ears to a voice that somehow I have managed to overlook for a long time. I look forward to correcting the oversight. ~ Paul Donnelly
Artist: Giovanni Mirabassi Album: Out of Track Label: Discograph / Minium Year: 2009 Format, bitrate: mp3, 128 kbps Time: 61:09 min Size: 84.3 Mb
"Giovanni is back again in trio. His programme this time is delicately put together, ranging from traditional tunes (Dear old Stockolm), to standards (Alone Together, Impressions, Just one of those things), committed songs once again (Here's to you, Le chant des Partisans) in the same spirit as Avanti!, new versions of Piazzola (Vuelvo al Sur) or of a film soundtrack (Convite para la Vida) and finally several personal compositions or dedications (to Pieranunzi)...It is a neat alternation between different styles and atmospheres, a smooth balance between profusion and restraint, the triggering of nostalgia and effects of surprise (the Latin treatment of Impressions). Under this avalanche of references, we will recognize the pianist's main inspiration... the elegance of his phrasing, his mastery and generosity ... excellent rhythm section and a magnificent sound..." ~ JAZZ MAGAZINE April 2009 - Vincent Cotro

Bob Stoloff is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music. This book is a comprehensive how-to on vocal jazz scat technique. Beginning with an introduction to the history of scat and its evolution, it contains a virtual library of scales and exercises. Rhythmic, melodic and harmonic concepts, including modes, are discussed, with recommended methods for practice given. Also, vocal bass and percussion routines are explained. The accompanying CD allows the student to listen to examples, and then work on the exercises with rhythm-section accompaniment. 'Scat!' is an intensive program, based upon application, not dry theory. Fundamental sight-reading ability is required to do the exercises. This book is an excellent resource for the jazz vocalist seeking to develop their style. singers.com
