Nina Simone - Baltimore |

Artist: Nina Simone Album: Baltimore Label: CTI Records Year: 1978 Release: 2003 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 36:49 Size: 78MB After an uncharacteristic (for her) four-year hiatus from recording, Nina Simone returned to the fringes of the pop world with Baltimore, the only album she recorded for the CTI label. While it bears some of the musical stylings of the period — light reggae inflections that hint of Steely Dan's "Haitian Divorce" — the vocals are unmistakably Simone's. Like many of her albums, the content is wildly uneven; Simone simply covers too much ground and there's too little attention paid to how songs flow together. As a result, a robust torch piano ballad like "Music for Lovers" is followed immediately by one of Simone's more awkward moments, an attempt to keep up with a jaunty rhythm track on a cover of Hall & Oates' "Rich Girl." Still, one must give her credit for always being provocative in her cover song choices, as she clearly scores on the Randy Newman-penned title track and a dramatic reading of Judy Collins' "My Father." Her voice throughout is in fine form, even when she phones it in on the album-closing traditional gospel tunes, but arranger David Matthews is a mismatch for her: He blows the arrangements with excessive string overlays and needlessly blaring background vocals. Simone herself all but disavowed the album shortly after its release, testament to her eternally contrarian, iconic nature. Despite her misgivings, though, Baltimore is an occasionally spellbinding if erratic album, a challenging and worthwhile listen for people ready to dip into the lesser-known entries in Nina Simone's vast catalog.~ Joseph McCombs, All Music Guide |

Artist: Oscar Pettiford Quintet & Vinnie Burke's Quartet Album: Bass By Pettiford / Burke Label: Rhino / Wea Year: 1999 [Orig.Year: 1954] Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 36:34 Size: 89 Mb This record is a combination of two complete ten inch records by Oscar Pettiford and Vinnie Burke groups. The coupling makes good musical sencse as both are fine, modern bass players. The groups that are led Oscar and Vinnie are as different as their solo styles. Yet, a pairing such as this-makes wonderful comparative litening; especially when the two leaders play the same instrument as well as Oscar and Vinnie do. ~ J.P.M. |

Artist: Ulf Wakenius Album: The Guitar Artistry Of Ulf Wakenius Label: Dragon Records Year: 2001 Format, bitrate: mp3, 256 kb/s Time: 55:30 Size: 101 Mb EVERY DAY IS AN OSCAR PETERSON DAY ! For the first time in a recording history that dates back to 1983, Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius has decided to go it alone with an album of a cappella acoustic guitar performances. Like his earlier recordings, he has a number of dedications to jazz guitarists, present and bygone, who he admires and to whom he feels he owes a part of his own artistry. Thus, there is a three-tune medley entitled "Barney Goes to Brazil," which notes Barney Kessel's guitar performances of three Brazilian masterpieces. Switching gears, or perhaps chords, he tips his axe to Joe Pass with "Li'l Darlin'" and then really reaches with "Cherokee," devoted to country picker Hank Garland. . . . |

Simon & Garfunkel - Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. |

Artist: Simon & Garfunkel Album: Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. Label: Columbia Year: Mar 10, 1964-Mar 31, 1964 Release: 2001 Genre: Folk-Rock Format, bitrate: MP3, 320kb/s Size: 84MB Wednesday Morning, 3 AM doesn't resemble any other Simon & Garfunkel album, because the Simon & Garfunkel sound here was different from that of the chart-topping duo that emerged a year later. Their first record together since their days as the teen duo of Tom & Jerry, the album was cut in March 1964 and, in keeping with their own sincere interests at the time, it was a folk-revival album. Paul Simon was just spreading his wings as a serious songwriter and shares space with other composers as well as a pair of traditional songs, including a beautifully harmonized rendition of "Peggy-O." The album opens with a spirited (if somewhat arch) rendition of Gibson and Camp's gospel/folk piece "You Can Tell the World." Also present is Ian Campbell's "The Sun Is Burning," which Simon heard on his first visit to England as an itinerant folksinger. But the dominant outside personality on the album is that of Bob Dylan — his "Times They Are A-Changing" is covered, but his influence is manifest on the oldest of the Simon originals here, "He Was My Brother." Simon's first serious, topical song, it was what first interested Columbia Records producer Tom Wilson in Simon & Garfunkel. By the time the album was recorded, however, Simon had evolved beyond Dylan as an inspiration and developed a unique songwriting voice of his own in the title track, a beautifully sung, half-lovely song. Wednesday Morning, 3 AM is surprisingly ambitious but also somewhat disjointed, mostly because the non-original material, apart from "Peggy-O" and "The Sun Is Burning," comes off so arch. The seeds of their future success were here, however, and took root when the version of "The Sounds of Silence" on this album started getting played on the radio.~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide |

Simon & Garfunkel - Sounds Of Silence |

 |
Artist: Simon & Garfunkel Album: Sounds Of Silence Label: Columbia Year: 1966 Release: 2001 Genre: Folk-Rock Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 86MB Simon & Garfunkel's second album was a radical departure from their first, owing to its being recorded in the wake of "The Sound of Silence," with its overdubbed electric instrument backing, topping the charts. Paul Simon arrived with a large song-bag, enhanced by his stay in England over the previous year and his exposure to English folk music, and the duo rushed into the studio to come up with ten more songs that would fit into the folk-rock context of the single. The result was this, their most hurried and uncharacteristic album -- Simon and Art Garfunkel had to sound like something they weren't, surrounded on many cuts by amplified folk-rock-style guitar, electric piano, and even horns. Much of the material came from The Paul Simon Songbook, an album that Simon had recorded for British CBS during his stay in England, some parts of it more radically altered than others. The record was a rushed job overall, and apart from the title track, the most important songs here were also, oddly enough, among the least enduring, "I Am a Rock" and "Richard Cory" -- the former for establishing the duo (and Simon as a songwriter) as confessional pop-poets, sensitive and alienated post-adolescents that endeared them to millions of college students going through what later came to be called an "identity crisis"; and the latter for endearing them to thousands of high-school English teachers with its adaptation of Edward Arlington Robinson's poem.~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide |

Artist: Ethel Ennis Album: Ethel Ennis Label: hilder productions 7 838 675 580-2 (1994) Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 256 MB & 140 MB Time: 67:50 2007 reissue of this album from the Baltimore native, originally released on RCA in 1958. In her heyday, the critics hailed as "the most accomplished singer performing today." That stature was earned by her magnificent voice, her brilliant compositions, her joyful performances and her collaboration with the finest musicians. Ethel Ennis first won national recognition for her recording 'Lullaby For Losers' in 1955. In 1958, Benny Goodman chose her as the female vocalist for the all-star band that he took to Europe for the Brussel's World Fair. This Is Ethel Ennis is highly indicative of the taste, originality and selectivity that went into her choice of songs. Poker. ~ cduniverse.com |

Robert Cray - I Was Warned |

 |
Artist: Robert Cray Album: I Was Warned Label: Mercury/Umvd Special Markets Release: 1992 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 49:21 Size: 113 Mb (full covers) Robert Cray's soulful vocals and spanky, sustainless guitar enliven the fairly by-the-numbers blues-influenced R&B on I Was Warned. The band itself is solid (especially tough-as-nails drummer Kevin Hayes), if unexceptional; the addition of the Memphis Horns (Andrew Love on tenor sax and Wayne Jackson on trumpet and trombone) on many of these tracks is a definite step in the right direction. However, the tracks are devoid of any kind of dirt whatsoever, which prevents them from really kicking the listener the way that they should. Granted, Cray isn't R.L. Burnside or even Buddy Guy, but a little more grit to the band performances, arrangements, tones, and recording would go a long way toward aiding the emotional kick of his admittedly great set of pipes. . . . |

Bobo Stenson Trio - Serenity |

Artist: Bobo Stenson Trio Album: Serenity Label:Ecm Import Year: 2000 Format:Flack Total size:405mb(2CD) AMG Rating: Over its last two albums, Reflections (ECM 1516) and War Orphans (ECM 1604), the Bobo Stenson Trio has enveloped itself in a study of chromatic lyricism and modal architecture that balances the three traditional jazz elements for alchemy -- rhythm, harmony, and melody -- the organization of space within the composition. On Serenity -- the group's most ambitious project to date and Stenson's ever -- the Bobo Stenson Trio (Bobo Stenson, piano; Anders Jormin, bass; Jon Christensen, drums) has taken the results of its earlier explorations along this line and transformed them into an entirely new kind of spontaneous compositional terrain, one that holds balance for the space between players rather than on individual contributions of sound. The fact that this methodological apparatus has worked lyrically with adherence to Western scale and melodic invention is a surprise; that it has deepened over time as the band's communication and sense of adventure develops is a wonder. Over two CDs, Stenson proves his trio is capable of realizing spatial improvisation in the context of not only their own compositions and improvisations, but within the constructs of composers such as Wayne Shorter ("Sweet Pea"), Hanns Eisler ("Der Flaumenbaum"), Alban Berg ("Die Nachtigall"), Silvio Rodriguez ("EL Mayor") -- a Stenson favorite -- and Lorens Brolen, whose two-part "Polska of Despair" unites each of the CDs in the package and the recording date as a whole. ... |

Artist: Shahab Tolouie Album: Tango Perso Year: 2009 Genre:World, Flamenco/Persian Traditional Format, bitrate: mp3, 128 kbps Time: 48:53 Size: 46 Mb Shahab Tolouie's album Tango Perso is the first ever recording of his original musical style, dubbed ”Ethno-flamenco” or ”Persian/Flamenco Fusion.” The CD's name speaks for itself: Tango Perso, a genre unknown until now... Seven compositions connect and merge the two worlds of Flamenco guitar and the Persian setar, with the dynamic voice of Shahab Tolouie. The eastern flavour of Flamenco guitar is intensified by the little-known four-stringed Persian setar which historically has mostly been used as an accompaniment to Persian Dervishes' singing. Accompanying 'Tango Perso' are the Iranian percussion instruments daff and tombak, the Spanish cajon, Indian tabla and the acoustic fretless bass. This unique CD is immediately compelling, with its novel interweaving of complex Persian and Flamenco rhythms. Shahab’s use of quarter tones, absent in classical and modern music, transport the listener to the very easternmost roots of modern guitar. ~ persianmirror.com |

Artist: Lurrie Bell Album: Young Man's Blues Label: JSP Records Year: 1989-1990 Release: 1999 Format, bitrate: MP3, 192 kbps Time: 72:00 Size: 105MB (2 Files) These sides, recorded with four different bands (three of which contain family members) between 1989 and 1990 offer a portrait of Lurrie Bell, the awesomely talented guitarist and the songs of Carey Bell at his best. Lurrie unfortunately fits the term "tortured artist," but in all of these sessions he was on fire, burning it up inside the band context and in his solos. This is the sound of modern Chicago blues without the slick trappings of the 21st century. Bell's writing and ability to lead a band here are unquestionable and his style, derived from and indebted to but not burdened by Buddy Guy, are in full flower. Take a listen to "Going Back to Louisiana," "Everybody Wants to Win," or "Crosscut Saw," and be blown away. It should also be noted that these sessions were actually cut for the JSP label and not licensed as so much of their other material is. ~ AMG Review by Thom Jurek |

Etta James - Let's Roll |

Artist: Etta James Album: Let's Roll Label: Private Music Release: May 06, 2003 Genre: Blues, Jazz Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 125MB LET'S ROLL won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album These days, the blues market often functions as a sanctuary for R&B artists who still provide soul and/or funk as we knew it in the '60s and '70s. Sounding a lot like Sam & Dave or Wilson Pickett won't get you on urban contemporary radio -- actually, it will probably keep you off urban radio -- but it might result in a gig at the Chicago Blues Festival or a contract with Alligator Records. For Etta James, refusing to embrace urban contemporary-style R&B has meant two things: (1) zero airplay on modern black stations, and (2) an enthusiastic following in the blues market. James has always been more of an R&B singer than a blues singer, but because she's so rootsy by today's standards, this 2003 release will get much of its support from blues fans. James, who turned 65 on January 25, 2003, is in fine form throughout the CD. Over the years, James has worked with a variety of producers, but she produced Let's Roll herself -- and the result is one of her most rock-minded releases. A few of the tracks have a blues-rock outlook, including "The Blues Is My Business" and a gutsy performance of Billy Beck's early-'50s hit "Stacked Deck." But much of the time, James favors a rock-influenced approach to Southern soul. In fact, many of the selections recall Ike & Tina Turner's '60s and early-'70s output, especially "Strongest Weakness," "Lie No Better," and "Somebody to Love" (not to be confused with the psychedelic Jefferson Airplane classic). James' longtime fans will be happy to know that she is very much on top of her game throughout this excellent CD.~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide |

Artist: Robert Cray Album: Too Many Cooks Label: Tomato Records/Rhino / WEA Release: 1990 Format, bitrate: mp3, 256 kb/s Time: 35:41 Size: 63, 7 Mb (cover) AMG Rating: Bluesman Robert Cray has occasionally been critized for mixing pop and funk elements in his music but no such criticism can be made about this CD reissue of his recording debut. It seems obvious in hindsight from the music that Cray would become a star for his appealing voice and strong guitar playing manage to both update and reinforce the blues tradition. This superior if brief (under 36-minute) session is recommended to all lovers of the blues. - Scott Yanow at AMG |

Artist: Screamin' Jay Hawkins Album: Frenzy Label: Edsel Year: 1982 Release: 1996 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 76MB Screamin' Jay Hawkins was a truly demented R&B shouter, as evidenced by the classic "I Put a Spell on You." It wasn't long before his camp schtick overshadowed his musical abilities, but for a brief while he had a certain warped genius. Most of these tracks were recorded for OKeh, and the 14-track compilation Frenzy contains most of the best of these recordings. Nothing ever quite touched "I Put a Spell on You," but the songs that came the closest are here. Frenzy may not be a comprehensive collection, but for anyone that wants more of the sound that made "I Put a Spell on You" a hit, this will suffice. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |
