Brad Mehldau - The Art Of The Trio, Vol. 1   Artist: Brad Mehldau
Album: The Art Of The Trio, Vol. 1
   Release: 2001
   Label: EMI
   Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kbs
   Size: 128mb
   Time: 55min

At this point in time, pianist Brad Mehldau's style falls between Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans, being heavily influenced by the voicings of the latter and the free yet lyrical improvising of the former. With fine backup work by bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, Mehldau explores five standards (including the Beatles' "Blackbird" and "Nobody Else but Me") and four originals, coming up with melodic yet adventurous ideas. Mehldau displays much potential for the future.

This was one in a series of recordings pianist Oscar Peterson did showcasing the music of particular American composers. It was really hard to get up a great enthusiasm for this set with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen because there's so much superior Peterson available. An easy ballad approach mixed with the usual Peterson panache on the swingers. The relative quality of Peterson's playing was high and this reached that minimum. This was a "good" set of Cole Porter; there are many better Oscar Peterson outings.

To quickly figure out the style of music performed on this CD, all one has to do is note the composers of the songs: Duke Jordan, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Dorham, Lee Morgan, Elmo Hope, Hank Mobley and Sonny Clark. "Round Midnight" and "Blue Bossa" aside, many of these songs are not exactly performed on an hourly basis, particularly Mobley's "Take Your Pick," Morgan's "Desert Moonlight" and Hope's "Low Tide." Although the relatively young all-stars (trumpeters Don Sickler and Wallace Roney, trombonist Robin Eubanks, altoist Bobby Watson, Ralph Moore on tenor, pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Bob Hurst and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith) all make inventive use of their solo space (an average of three musicians solo on each selection), it is Sickler's transcriptions and arrangements that are the most impressive aspect of the set; many of the performances are reminiscent of their initial obscure recordings. Often the background horn rhythms and harmonies are as interesting as the solos. Recommended to lovers of hard bop.

On two Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts, tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and trombonist J.J. Johnson (backed by the Oscar Peterson Trio plus drummer Connie Kay) performed an identical repertoire during the two sets of music, one recorded in mono and the other in stereo. All of the music from those dates (with the exception of one number left out due to lack of space) is included on this very exciting release: two versions apiece of "Billie's Bounce," "My Funny Valentine," "Crazy Rhythm," and "Blues in the Closet" plus one try at "Yesterdays" and "It Never Entered My Mind." Surprisingly Oscar Peterson and guitarist Herb Ellis do not solo at all but Getz and Johnson make a perfect combination and are in peak form. Bebop at its best, it has plenty of up-tempo jamming and no shortage of ideas.

A collection of live concert recordings from 1963-1964, this is Monk's excellent quartet shining brightly. Tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse in particular is playing at a very high level, and Monk is inspired, playing a handful of his compositions and standards in extended form. The sound is as good as it gets. Highly recommended.

A great Roy Buchanan concert that took place at Agora Ballroom in Chicago, Cleveland on the 15th of May 1978 and broadcasted on FM. The sound is fair for a bootleg but the performance is quite exceptional. Best tracks: "Delta Woman", "I'm Evil" & "Hey Joe" (of course). Recommended to all Buchanan and rock-blues fans.

Jackie Cain and Roy Kral are incapable of sounding down or being blue. East of Suez is another batch of delightfully upbeat material featuring their distinctive two-part vocal harmony, guaranteed to "turn your frown upside down." The program alternates between songs with lyrics and wordless vocal romps. Michael Franks' opening "Don't Be Blue" sets the tone and is followed by "D'Light," a Kral original featuring his piano, Paul Johnson's vibes, and the duo's "doo-dop-ooo-dah" scatting. The Johnny Mandel-Paul Williams composition, "Close Enough for Love," gives Cain an opportunity to demonstrate her beautiful way with a ballad. The title track is another wordless workout, while "Wings of Love" is a gorgeously swinging piece of romantic wistfulness. Bassist Brian Torff kicks off the Cain-Johnson collaboration, "Travelin'," a marvelously melodic invitation to hit the road, full of surprising musical curves and swerves. After the Alec Wilder pop tune "It's So Peaceful in the Country," East of Suez wraps up with a bebop finale, Bird and Dizzy's "Anthropology."

The fingers on pianist Brad Mehldau's hands are possessed by a sentient intelligence quick and inventive enough to inspire slack-jawed wonder. That intelligence is on prodigious display on the Brad Mehldau Trio's 2008 double-disc live outing. ... Full DescriptionRecorded over four evenings at New York City's Village Vanguard, LIVE captures the pianist's elegant, thoughtful, exploratory style within a dynamic, dazzling trio setting.
Bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard exhibit supernatural sympathy with Mehldau, creating surging pockets of rhythm and open, shifting frameworks for melodic improvisation. The program consists of originals mixed with wildly eclectic covers (including Oasis's "Wonderwall," the Tin Pan Alley standard "More Than You Know," Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun," and John Coltrane's "Countdown"). This all makes for thoroughly engaging listening, and a testament to one of the finer talents in contemporary jazz.

Aretha Franklin is the greatest singer of her generation and one of the most important and influential female soul singers of the 20th century. Franklin’s work is as impressive and influential as any artist, not only as a singerbut also as a pianist. Her first recordings were gospel tracks but in 1959, she signed with Columbia where sherecorded pop, blues and jazz. ”YEAH” IN PERSON WITH HER QUARTET comes from that period before her big break in 1967 with Atlantic where she together with producer Jerry Wexler redefined soul music. ”YEAH” shows Franklin in excellent form as a jazz artist.
