Esbjorn Svensson Trio - Live at Juan-les-Pins   Artist: Esbjorn Svensson Trio
   Album: Live at Juan-les-Pins
   Time: 58 Min
   Format: avi 640x416 & mp3 320 kbps
   Size : 700 mb

Juan-les-Pins is famous for its annual jazz festival in July. New Orleans is a sister city, something which for a series of years was manifested with carnival festivities in the streets of Juan-les-Pins, with both local and New Orleans jazz bands parading. Along the street behind the seaside stage where the annual jazz festival "Jazz а Juan" is held, one will find ceramic tiles laid into the pavement with handprints of more than 50 jazz musicians who have played at this festival, among those.

The Swedish trio e.s.t., one of the most influential bands of the last decade, recently released their last album, Leucocyte, a series of informal jam session-based free improvised tunes. Tragedy struck three months before its release with the death of pianist Esbjцrn Svensson in a diving accident. Drummer Magnus Цstrцm was kind enough to speak on the phone to Arturo Mora about Esbjцrn’s passing, the new CD and what’s to come: past, present and future.

Chris Potter - Gratitude    Artist: Chris Potter
    Album: Gratitude
    Label: Verve
    Year: 2001
    Format, bitrate: MP3 @320 kbps.
    Time: 72 min.
    Size: 169 Mb.
AMG Rating: Chris Potter - Gratitude

Saxophonist Chris Potter honors the legacy of some of jazz's greats on Gratitude, his debut for Verve. The award-winning virtuoso and composer is compelling on his tributes to John Coltrane, Eddie Harris, Wayne Shorter, Charlie Parker, and several other legendary saxophonists. Gratitude contains nine original compositions written by Potter, who plays tenor saxophone on the majority of the songs, switches to soprano saxophone on "Eurydice," his tribute to Wayne Shorter, and plays the alto saxophone and Chinese wood flute on "Star Eyes," the tribute to Charlie Parker. Chris Potter is outstanding on bass clarinet on his composition "The Visitor" for Lester Young and captures the ambience that reflects the many styles of these accomplished players, including sliding from one note to a higher or lower note with intermediate pitches on "The Source," his tribute to the glissandi (sheets of sound) of John Coltrane, and capturing the dense, soulful sound of Joe Henderson on "Shadow." Gratitude also includes a song titled "What's New," for the current generation which completes the set. Potter, leading his great quartet of contemporaries -- keyboardist Kevin Hayes, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Brian Blade -- makes a significant contribution to jazz history with this project and offers musical statements and voices that are truly varied in scope and deep in their essence.

Biography

For lex!

The six main selections on this CD were last released as part of a Prestige LP titled The Oscar Pettiford Memorial Album, also including four tunes from a Serge Chaloff set. The CD reissue adds two alternate takes to the excellent session which features Pettiford on occasional bass solos and (on "Rhumblues") overdubbed on cello. The superior set also features tenor saxophonist Al Cohn, trombonist Kai Winding, guitarist Tal Farlow, French pianist Henri Renaud and drummer Max Roach -- quite an all-star group. Renaud contributed two of the songs which also include numbers by Hoagy Carmichael ("Stardust"), Gerry Mulligan and both Leonard and Jane Feather. The music is straight-ahead, with "Burt's Pad" (heard in two versions) going on for over 9Ѕ minutes. A fine CD that is easily recommended to bop collectors.

    Size: 127 Mb (full covers)

Last Time Around — Live At Legends is a fitting farewell to the late, great Junior Wells and his partnership, friendship and kinship with Buddy Guy that lasted decades. The album is a historic release in many ways. It reunites two blues legends who began their unique association in the 1950s. The album was recorded live in March 1993 at Buddy Guy's world-famous Chicago blues mecca Legends, and it's an acoustic document of many classic songs that made both Wells and Guy legends in their own right, such as "She's Alright" and "I've Been There," along with other classic blues standards such as "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Key to the Highway," all delivered with a looseness and power that define both Guy and Wells. It also marks the last time the two ever played together.

Given that this was co-produced by Al Jackson (of Booker T. & the MG's) and Willie Mitchell (of Hi Records), and adds embellishment by the Memphis Horns, it's unsurprising that this is very much a soul-blues record. It's a workmanlike effort with an early-'70s Stax period feel, including remakes of two of his past R&B singles, "Think" and "Just Got to Know." The CD reissue adds a couple of previously unreleased bonus tracks.

An obscure compilation from an even more obscure French subsidiary of Verve Recors Company issued in 1971 (on vinyl only) this wonderful collection of Oscar Peterson songs (both live and studio), as a part of "Midnite Jazz and Blues" series.

Bob Mintzer Big Band - Swing Out   Artist: Bob Mintzer Big Band
   Album: Swing Out

   Year: 2008
   Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 Kbps
   Time: 63:55
   Size: 118 MB

Bob Mintzer has led big bands off and on since the late 1970s, in addition to small groups and working as a part of the jazz fusion band the Yellowjackets. These sessions open with his colorful "'Swing Out," a forward-thinking chart in the mold of Bob Brookmeyer's large ensemble writing. "Each Day" is an upbeat number with a gospel undercurrent, while "Swangalang" is an infectious midtempo blues. Vocalist Kurt Elling once again guests on a track, writing lyrics to Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny's "Minuano," delivering a heartfelt performance followed by potent solos from Mintzer and pianist Phil Markowitz. Mintzer also finds fresh approaches with his arrangements of the standards "My Shining Hour" and the venerable "Someday My Prince Will Come." The tenor saxophonist's arrangements are first-rate throughout these enjoyable sessions. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this CD benefits the programs of the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh.

Wynton Kelly - Last Trio Session   Artist: Wynton Kelly
   Album: Last Trio Session
   Label: Delmark
   Year: 1968
   Release: 1993
   Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kb/s
   Size: 94.2 MB
   Time: 40:23

The trio led by pianist Wynton Kelly, which also included bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, first functioned as the rhythm section of Miles Davis' Quintet in 1958. In 1963, they left Davis' band and spent time as Wes Montgomery's backup group; the unit stayed together until Chambers' death on Jan. 4, 1969, a run of over ten years (Kelly would pass away two years later). Their final studio session, released for the first time domestically by Delmark in 1988, is partly hindered by the inclusion of some unsuitable pop songs (including "Say a Little Prayer for Me," "Watch What Happens," "Light My Fire" and "Yesterday"), but typically, the musicians do their best to swing the tunes. Best tunes on the historic set are "Kelly's Blues" and "Castilian Waltz"...
