Tete Montoliu Trio - A Spanish Treasure |

Artist: Tete Montoliu Album: A Spanish Treasure Label: Concord CCD-4493 Year: 1992 Format, bitrate: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 299 MB & 135 MB Time: 60:01 AMG Rating: Tete Montoliu has long been one of the most talented pianists in jazz but, because he lives in Spain, he tends to be overlooked. A fine bop-based stylist, Montoliu generally offers few surprises to listeners but always swings. This CD is a typical outing for the pianist, featuring ten jazz standards, fine backup work by bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Akira Tana, and enjoyable improvisations from the virtuosic leader. Most of the performances are fairly concise, falling into the three- to seven-minute range except for a lengthy exploration of "What's New." Highlights include creative versions of the rarely played "Israel and "Tricotism," "Like Someone in Love" (which is taken as a jazz waltz) and a treatment of "All of You" that finds the 58-year old Montoliu sounding a bit like Chick Corea. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Jazz At The Santa Monica Civic '72 |

Artist: Various Artists Album: Jazz At The Santa Monica Civic '72 (3 LP) Label: Pabblo Records Year: 1972 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 41:17 + 47:40 + 1:05:36 Size: 94,6 + 109 + 150 + 14,7 (covers) EVERY DAY IS AN OSCAR PETERSON DAY! The Pablo label (and Norman Granz's return as a full-time producer) was launched with this wonderful package, first released as a three-LP set and now available as a three-CD reissue. The 1972 concert was originally supposed to only feature the Count Basie Orchestra and Ella Fitzgerald but Granz surprised everyone by inviting some "guests": trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison, the tenors of Stan Getz and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, pianist Oscar Peterson and bassist Ray Brown. Together with Basie-trombonist Al Grey they formed the Jazz at the Philharmonic All-Stars and play wonderfully on three jams (listen to Elridge's break on "In a Mellow Tone") and a ballad medley. In addition there are four selections from Basie's band (featuring the tenor of Jimmy Forrest, trumpeter Pete Minger and altoist Curtis Peagler), a full set from Fitzgerald and a Peterson-Brown duet on "You Are My Sunshine." The highpoint of the concert however is the final song, a classic version of "C Jam Blues" which finds Fitzgerald trading off in very humorous fashion with Grey, Getz, Sweets, Lockjaw and Eldridge; each of the encounters has at least one remarkable moment. This gem is highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

James Carter - Chasin' The Gypsy |

Artist: James Carter Album: Chasin' The Gypsy Label: Atlantic Format: WAVPACK, CUE Release: 2000 Size: 342 MB REPOST with new links from Mr. firster For Chasin' the Gypsy, James Carter enlists violinist (and cousin) Regina Carter, drummer Joey Baron, guitar mainstay Jay Berliner, and several others to tackle this homage to Gypsy guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt. The bustle and muscle are in balance, with accordion, steel-string guitar, bass saxophone, violin, and drums flawlessly chugging through these nine tunes. --Andrew Bartlett
Reinhardt's melodic savvy, jubilant swing and wit are not lost on James Carter, who booms into the opener "Nuages" blowing the tune's head on a body-rattling bass sax--the initial surprise of hearing this uncommon instrument played with such effortless warmth is enough to coax a smile. Moving easily between tenor, soprano and f mezzo horn, Carter conjures many emotional moods; from the haunted, vibrato-soaked heartbreak of "La Derniere Bergere" to the carnivalesque accordion and sly musical smirk of "Manoir De Mes Reves." James Carter has certainly been CHASIN' THE GYPSY--sounds like he might have caught her, too. |

Arnett Cobb - Movin' Right Along |

Artist: Arnett Cobb Album: Movin' Right Along Year: 1960 Label: OJC/Prestige Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kb/s Time: 38:42 Size: 90,49 MB(+5% recovery) AMG Rating: From the opening notes of "Nitty Gritty," Movin' Right Along is a warm, stimulating set. Recorded in two days in February 1960, the album finds Arnett Cobb and a few friends playing an energetic, straight-ahead set. The only oddity is the presence of Buck Clarke's congas, which manage to add an extra layer of rhythm, even though there isn't a Latin tune in sight. There's a good mix between ballads like "(I Don't Stand) A Ghost of a Chance (With You)" and up-tempo pieces like "Exactly Like You." Cobb's expressive playing stands out most clearly on slower pieces like "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," allowing plenty of room for him to breathe life into each note. The odd piece out is "Fast Ride," the lone tune to include pianist Tommy Flanagan and conga player Danny Barrajanos. This upbeat piece leans toward hard bop and, as Joe Goldberg points out in the liner notes, recalls "Lester Leaps In." Today, many would call Movin' Right Along "mainstream jazz," though the term doesn't quite do justice to Cobb's soulful tenor work. For those who remember Cobb's work from the 1940s through the 1980s, the value of this reissue will be obvious. For everyone else, Movin' Right Along will serve as a fine introduction. ~ Ronnie D.
