And because EWF had so successfully mastered the form, critics (and Columbia) made up their minds they weren't going to push this one; it was bound to be just more disco. I don't think some of the critics even listened to it. "Faces" is a song cycle, and it all works. . . you groove, you chill, you boogie and then head into the quiet storm. You're in the hands of the masters the whole time and it's a sweet ride. |

As Getz points out, however, the tenor saxophone and the valve trombone are two uncommonly difficult instruments for coupling purposes. "They are both in the saure register, for one thing," Getz explains. "Each instrument has a smali range and, as far as actual sound is concemed, they don't glorify each other. Well, this is quite a problem. One solution that occurred to me was the thought of switching over to baritone saxophone—to create a more effective contrast. But then, I realized something else—I have no business switching to another instrument unti] 1've mastered my own, the tenor. And that I have yet to do.... |

Hubert Laws - Say It With Silence (1978) |

 |
Artist: HUBERT LAWS Album: SAY IT WITH SILENCE Label: COLUMBIA Year: release 1978 Genre: JAZZ Format, bitrate: MP3@320kbps Time: 33.23 Size: 76.5MB Nothing too silent here, as the set's filled with the kind of soulful fusion grooves we'd expect from Hubert Laws in the 70s! The album's a real standout in his Columbia catalog -- a perfectly balanced set that features plenty of great work from Hubert on flute, amidst arrangements that also have a bit of a groove on most numbers -- never too smooth, nor too commercial -- and very much in the spirit of Bobbi Humphrey's excellent late 70s sides for the label. As with those records, there's a bit of vocals here -- sung in a lovely way by Debra and Eloise Laws -- and there's also a bit of strings here, but used sparingly to match the sweetly stepping rhythms. Titles include "The Baron", "False Faces", "Love Gets Better", "It Happens Every Day", and "Say It With Silence". © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc. |

Artist: Enrico Rava Album: New-York Days Label: ECM Year: 2009 Format, bitrate: MP3 192kbps Time: 1:17:46 Size:106 Mb New York Days features Italy's highly inventive jazz musicians Enrico Rava and protégé Stefano Bollani, together with three leading American jazzmen: master drummer Paul Motian, bassist Larry Grenadier, and, in his ECM debut, saxophonist Mark Turner. A magical European/American collaboration, recorded in the jazz capital of the world. The CD is both a transatlantic project and a kind of `homecoming'. Rava found his musical direction while living in New York in the late 60s/early 70s. Since then an increasingly `Italian' lyricism has also made itself felt in his playing. Rava's soulful trumpet is strongly contrasted with the lean, analytical playing of Mark Turner. Bollani's playful harmonic imagination shapes bridges between them. Larry Grenadier is "present and focused in "every moment" as Rava says, and Paul Motian is as idiosyncratically creative as ever. The Rava/Bollani/Motian trio album of 2004, Tati was a popular and critical success. New York Days, take the combination to the next level |

Oscar Peterson - Exclusively for My Friends, Vol. 6 Travelin' On (2004) |

Artist: Oscar Peterson Album: Exclusively for My Friends, Vol. 6 Travelin' On Label: Verve/MPS Year: 1968, release 2004 Format, bitrate: Mp3 320 kb/s Time: 37:33 Size: 86,1 Mb AMG Rating: ***** This is yet another memorable concert by the Oscar Peterson Trio recorded in Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer's excellent studio. With bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham, Peterson tears into the old gospel favorite "Travelin' On" with a passion second to none. Following it is a beautiful treatment of Johnny Mandel's timeless ballad "Emily," which runs for over ten minutes but never loses its impact. Durham sets the pace with his soft percussion to set up Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Corcovado" (later known as "Quiet Nights"), though Peterson devours the song whole with a breathtaking display of his formidable technique. Francy Boland's "Sax No End" was a relatively new composition, having been recorded for the first time just the previous year by the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. But one can almost hear a larger ensemble by listening to Peterson's virtuoso interpretation in an uptempo setting, assisted by Jones' agile bass and Durham's steady percussion. Peterson cools off his audience with an extended exploration of Benny Carter's "When Lights Are Low," though his fresh approach makes it seem like a brand new composition. Like other releases in Oscar Peterson's Exclusively for My Friends series, Travelin' On is warmly recommended; this hybrid Super Audio edition adds to the listener's experience. ~ by Ken Dryden at All Music Guide |

Artist: Jimmy Smith Album: Fourmost Return Label: Milestone Release: 2001 Format, bitrate: Mp3 320 kb/s Time: 48:17 Size: 114 Mb; Covers: 4 AMG Rating: **** Recorded during the same 1990 gig at Fat Tuesday's as the earlier Fourmost CD, Fourmost Return features Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine, Kenny Burrell, and Grady Tate in great form once again, so this is no compilation of lukewarm leftovers. The music includes a burning, up-tempo take of "Sonnymoon for Two" and a bluesy and lyrical interpretation of "Mood Indigo," as well as an initially lounge-like "Laura" that gives way to a hot solo by Burrell. Smith also revives his popular "Back at the Chicken Shack" and adds a good-natured but rather hoarse vocal to the oldie "Ain't She Sweet." All the players are in top form and this release should appeal to fans of soul-jazz. - by Ken Dryden at All Music Guide |

Artist: Oscar Peterson Album: Like Someone In Love (1965 live) Label: Jazz Hour Year: 1965 Release 1996 Format, bitrate: Mp3 320 kb/s Time: 1:01:34 Size: 141 Mb This CD is a curiosity in Oscar Peterson's discography, recorded during unidentified European concerts in 1965 just prior to his longtime rhythm mates Ed Thigpen (drums) and Ray Brown (bass) departing from his trio. The recording quality is distant and a bit muffled, as if this came from an amateur, private collector, or bootleg tapes. The recording is certainly not from a sound board or engineered to maximum effect, and there is no other correlating release to be found that suggests this is a reissue. The music, of course, is well played, as these three shared a dynamism few jazz trios can ever claim, and for that reason alone collectors may want this. For those just getting familiar with Peterson's brilliance, it would be an item to pass on in lieu of his many other commercially available recordings. One wonders if Peterson actually approved its release...hmmmm. ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide |

Artist: Mal WaldronAlbum: Mal -1Label: Prestige Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 230 MB & 85 MB Time: 37:52 Mal Waldron's recording debut as a leader presents the pianist with his many gifts already well developed. For the 1956 quartet date, he takes charge to strike a balance between the sound of a blowing session and the refinement of a more polished date. The spontaneity is there, but the set also benefits from Waldron's thoughtful charts. At this stage of his development, Waldron was a distinctive bop pianist whose occasional sputtering, knotty phrasing revealed the acknowledged influence of Thelonious Monk, as well as similarities with contemporaries Al Haig and Bud Powell. For this set, though, the focus is not on Waldron's playing, but on his ability to lead from the piano bench. The horn players -- top-flight boppers Idrees Sulieman on trumpet and Gigi Gryce on alto sax -- contribute hot solos played with class and authority, and disciplined ensemble work supports the overall structure of Waldron's charts. Some of the arrangements seem written with a larger ensemble in mind, but they also work in the quartet setting, with Waldron's effective use of staggered horn entries, dynamics, interesting harmonies, and occasional countermelodies adding color and variety to the performances. The tracks comprise a bright, focused performance of Benny Golson's "Stablemates," a sparse, bluesy take of the standard "Yesterdays," a pair of good Waldron originals and one from Sulieman, along with Lee Sears' "Transfiguration." Bassist Julian Euell and drummer Arthur Edgehill supply a strong and reliable bop pulse. ~ Jim Todd, All Music Guide REPOST! |

James Brown - Jazz (2007) |

Artist: James Brown Album: Jazz Label: Verve Music Group Year: 1964 - 1970. Release: 2007 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 125MB The Godfather was the king of soul and the architect of funk, but he also had a yen for jazzier flavors, as this excellent swinging set demonstrates. One of the many compilations issued in the wake of James Brown's passing in 2007 is this rather strange and necessary one produced by Alan Leeds and Harry Weinger. There's no irony in the title, and it's only a little misleading. Brown loved all kinds of music throughout his lifetime and made no secret of it. This set compiles 12 cuts, all of which Brown originally produced, that accent the jazzier -- and sometimes near all-out jazz (though everything on this baby has more than a little soul grit mixed in) -- side of the Godfather. The coolest thing about this set is that it contains numerous unreleased alternate mixes, extended versions, single edits, and literally unreleased versions and tunes that span from standards and soul-jazz cuts to '70s-era pop tunes. Ranging from 1964's reading of the Adderley Brothers' "Tengo Tango" (never before issued in any form) to a 1970s alternate mix of "For Once in My Life," this is perhaps among the most ambitious of Brown recordings to be released in quite some time. Released gems here include Brown on a killer B-3 take of Jimmy McGriff's "All About My Girl" in 1966 and his version of Joe Zawinul's "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)" from 1967. In between, there are hip mixes of standards like "Cottage for Sale" and "That's My Desire." The sequencing here is not stale either, since it's not chronological. In fact, since it bookends in the year 1970, with the 1960s material sandwiched between, it's rather wonderful aesthetically. Recommended. Thom Jurek,AMG |

John Lee Hooker - The Cream (1977) |

 |
Artist: John Lee Hooker Album: The Cream (Live) Label: Tomato Year: 1977 Release: 2006 Genre: Blues Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 212MB (2 cd) Joined by a full band that includes two other guitarists (John Garcia, Jr. on lead and Ron Thompson on rhythm), John Lee Hooker is passionately rockin' on this live date (recorded at the Keystone in Palo Alto, CA in 1977). Hooker has always been known for taking quite a few liberties with his material, something that could easily throw some musicians off. Without a doubt, Hooker keeps a sideman on his toes -- and he presents even more of a challenge on stage because there are no second and third takes. But this is a band that, although not in a class with Canned Heat, obviously understands (and even thrives on) his sense of spontaneity, and rises to the occasion on such familiar gems as "One Room Country Shack," "When My First Wife Left Me" and "Tupelo," as well as the invigorating "Boogie On" (one of the many variations of "Boogie Chillen" Hooker has provided over the years). Hooker doesn't do as much improvising as he did when playing unaccompanied at New York's Hunter College the previous year, but he never ceases to be confidently soulful. Although not quite essential, The Cream is an engaging CD that definitely has a lot going for it. Alex Henderson, AMG |

Because he settled in Los Angeles, Henderson never became a major name but he was actually one of the top male jazz singers to emerge in the late '50s. Backed quite sympathetically by the swinging Oscar Peterson Trio (which consisted of pianist Peterson, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Ed Thigpen), Henderson is in prime form on such songs as "All or Nothing at All," "Gravy Waltz," "I've Got a Crush on You," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill"; four previously unissued songs round out the fairly definitive collection. - by Scott Yanow at All Music Guide |
