     Already a sensation in his native England, 22yearold piano man Jamie Cullum comes off like a hip amalgamation of Harry Connick, Jr. and Randy Newman on his sophomore effort, Twentysomething. As with Blue Note's crossover wunderkind Norah Jones, Cullum works best when he's not trying too hard to please hardcore jazz aficionados, but it's not too difficult to imagine his bonustrack version of Pharrell Williams' "Frontin'" turning some jazz fans onto the Neptunes. Showcasing Cullum's sardonic wit and loungesavvy attitude, the album deftly flows from singer/songwriter love songs to jazzy barroom romps and reappropriated modern rock tunes. Cullum has a warm voice with a slight rasp that retains a bit of his Brit accent even though his influences Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Tom Waits are resolutely American. Truthfully, Cullum isn't the most accomplished vocalist and his piano chops are pleasant at best Oscar Peterson he ain't. That said, he's still a kick. What he lacks in technique he makes up for in swagger and smarts as many of his original compositions reveal. On the swinging and wickedly humorous title track a take on postgraduate slackerdom Cullum sardonically laments, "After years of expensive education, a car full of books and anticipation, I'm an expert on Shakespeare and that's a hell of a lot but the world don't need scholars as much as I thought." It's a timely statement in our overeducated, underemployed "dotbomb" economy and deftly posits Cullum as a jazz singer as much of as for his generation. Also compelling are his choices of cover tunes, as he is able to imprint his own persona on the songs while magnifying what made them brilliant to begin with. To these ends, Jeff Buckley's "Lover, You Should've Come Over" gets a gutwrenchingly minimalist treatment and Radiohead's "High and Dry" comes off as the best Bruce Hornsby song you've never heard. Conversely, Cullum treats jazz standards as modern pop tunes, reworking them into contemporary styles that are neither cynical nor awkward. In fact, his atmospheric, '70s AM pop take on "Singin' in the Rain," replete with string backgrounds and Cullum's percolating Rhodes keyboard, is one of the most appealing cuts on the album, lending the Great American Songbook warhorse an air of virginity.      Spirituals & Gospel is a beautiful recording. Mavis’ voice is no longer pure, it’s now patinaed with the pain and strains of years and years on the road, a road that was often up and down the rough sides of social mountains. And regardless of the fact that the bulk of Peterson’s recordings are soaked in the blues this man obviously spent some time in church, and he sure wasn’t sleeping.

     Albert Ayler teamed up with his brother, trumpeter Donald Ayler, on this record for the first time, with the exception of one slightly earlier track issued on an Impulse sampler. The concert performance with both Aylers, Charles Tyler on alto, bassist Lewis Worrell, and drummer Sunny Murray is their entire 20-minute set from a Town Hall concert and originally came out as a one-sided LP (with the flipside being blank). What is here is quite interesting, with some ferocious ensembles, military-like themes (most of the music is taken up by "Holy Ghost"), and a couple of tenor solos from Albert. This music should have been combined with some other dates so the release would not be so ridiculously brief, but it's worth getting (if found at a budget price) anyway. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

     Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren covers a variety of funky styles on Fonk da World. There are a few throwaway vocals (the opening "Booty Rock" has some rap) but also some worthwhile soloing from Landgren, altoist Per Rusktrask Johansson, and the oversized rhythm section. Most of the songs are a bit lightweight (other than "Freedom Jazz Dance") and little unexpected happens so this set (which ranges from funky jazz to early fusion and soul-jazz) is not overly memorable. But used for background dancing or light listening, Fonk da World succeeds on its own limited terms.

     Vibraphonist Gary Burton's place in the jazz firmament has long been assured, but he has no intention of sitting on the sidelines as others enter the field. Instead, Burton has a knack for reaching out to younger players, thus leading to the title of his 2004 release, Generations. More specifically, the title refers to guitarist Julian Lage, a new talent on the jazz scene whose low profile can be attributed to the fact that he's a sophomore in high school. Lage's cool sound, inspired by Jim Hall, perfectly complements the lightness of Burton's vibes, giving Generations a relaxed, mellow sound. Burton and Lage are joined by pianist Makoto Ozone, bassist James Genus, and drummer Clarence Penn on well-worn classics like Oscar Peterson's "Wheatland" and more recent classics like Pat Metheny's "Take Another Look." Ozone proves something of a linchpin between the lead players and the rhythm section, offering light, lovely solos on pieces like "The Title Will Follow" and a flurry of rhythmic chords on "Ladies in Mercedes." Burton's predilection toward new ideas can also be discerned by his inclusion of a great deal of new material written by Lage (three pieces) and Ozone (two pieces). Generations is another fine effort by Burton, an excellent introduction to Lage, and above all, a solid recording by a fine group playing in synchronicity. ~ Review by Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., AMG.
