Artist: Lennie Tristano Album: Concert In Copenhagen Label: Orchard Year: 2001 [Recording Date: Oct 31, 1965] Genre: Jazz, Bop, Cool, Avant-Garde Jazz Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 39:56 Size: 89 Mb In the '40s, innovative jazz pianist Lennie Tristano pioneered an inventive approach that marked a clear break with the prevailing trends in bebop and introduced stylistic elements that drew on the influences of 20th century classical music as well as anticipating the explosive sounds of free jazz. Lennie Tristano: Solo -- The Copenhagen Concert preserves a memorable concert Tristano performed at the Tivoli Gardens in 1965, which was recorded for television broadcast; selections include "Darn That Dream," "Ghost of a Chance," "Tangerine," "You Don't Know What Love Is," "Lullaby of the Leaves," and more. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |

After learning to play keyboard instruments, Grappelli took up the violin, later studying it formally. In the mid-20s he played in dance bands in Paris, gradually turning more to jazz. In the early 30s he met Django Reinhardt and with him formed the Quintette du Hot Club de France. Yehudi Menuhin, Baron Menuhin, OM, KBE (April 22, 1916 – March 12, 1999) was an American-born violinist and conductor who spent most of his performing career in the United Kingdom. Though born in New York City, New York, he later became a citizen of Switzerland in 1970, and in 1985, of the United Kingdom. During the 1970s, '80s and '90s, Yehudi Menuhin made jazz recordings with Stephane Grappelli, classical recordings with L. Subramaniam and albums of Eastern music with the great sitarist Ravi Shankar. REPOST! Stephane Grappelli - a violin virtuoso - was born today 26 January 1908! |

Lennie Tristano – Continuity (2000) |

Artist: Lennie Tristano Album: Continuity Label: Jazz Records Year: 2000 [Recording Date: Oct 1958-Jun 1964] Genre: Jazz, Bop, Cool, Avant-Garde Jazz Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 38:04 Size: 83.6 Mb These valuable recordings document the great pianist Lennie Tristano during his later years, when public appearances were rare and recordings only an infrequent event. Tristano is heard playing at the Half Note on two separate occasions. Warne Marsh is on tenor, altoist Lee Konitz is a major asset to the selections from 1964, and the rhythm sections include either Henry Grimes or Sonny Dallas on bass and Paul Motian or Nick Stabulas on drums. The recording quality is decent if not admirable, but it is the music (six explorations of common chord changes and a 50-second "Everything Happens to Me") that is wonderful. Tristano, Marsh, and Konitz constantly create new melody lines and make highly original music. ~ AMG Scott Yanow |

Jacques Loussier Trio - The Best of Play Bach (2004) |

Artist: Jacques Loussier Album: The Best of Play Bach Label: Telarc [TLC 63590 (SACD)] Year: 2004 Format: FLAC & CUE Total time: 60:35 Size: 299 MB (+ Artwork) "The Best of Play Bach" is a compilation of Loussier's three Bach-inspired Telarc collections. It celebrates Loussier's 70-th birthday and marks the 45-th anniversary of the first and live performance of the original "Jacques Loussier Trio" as well as the 20-th anniversary of the reformed Trio that appears on all of the Telarc recordings. Jacques Loussier and his trio have been successfully marrying classical music and jazz since 1959, when the original Play Bach album appeared. Shocking at the time, this music now brings smiles of enjoyment to both jazz and classical listeners. These re-recordings, made in 1993 and 1994 in France, have been remixed to 5.1 for this release. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is the big piece, but I liked the ensuing Pastorale, with a virtuoso bass solo by Vincent Charbonnier that is of demonstration caliber -- just the right track for testing the subwoofer crossover balance. The surrounds have wisely been used to provide only ambience and space, and the up-front sound is well-balanced, warm, and transparent; André Aprino’s drums are particularly well-reproduced. Both sets of SACD tracks, two- and multichannel, have noticeably more presence than those carrying the regular CD sound. ~ Rad Bennett (goodsound.com) |

Artist: Elvin Jones Introduces Takehisa Tanaka Album: When I Was at Aso Mountain Label: Enja Year: 1993 Genre: Jazz, Post-Bop, Hard Bop Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 66:19 Size: 146.2 Mb This is basically a recording of the trio of Japanese pianist Takehisa Tanaka and the stellar rhythm team of bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Elvin Jones, with saxophonist/flautist Sonny Fortune performing on three of the eight selections, which include three Tanaka compositions and three standards. Ironically Fortune plays on all three Tanaka compositions, which are the recording's highlights: "I Was Too Young" is a ballad with the beautiful melody played by Fortune's tenor sax; "My Dream Come True, To E.J.," the only up-tempo selection on this recording, with the melody also played by Fortune's tenor sax; and the title track, a medium-tempo number that features Fortune's flute and Jones on mallets and brushes. The three standards, "Beautiful Love," "You Don't Know Where Love Is," and "Stella By Starlight" are given relatively straightforward readings here. The normally aggressive Jones is more restrained than usual throughout this recording, probably so he doesn't overpower Tanaka, a good pianist who seems out of place playing with musicians the caliber of Jones, McBee, and Fortune. Not an essential recording except for Jones completists. ~ Greg Turner, All Music Guide |

Archie Shepp & Richard Davis - Body and Soul (1989) |

Artist: Archie Shepp & Richard Davis Album: Body and Soul Format: FLAC & mp3 (320k/s) Size: 218 & 126 MB (scans) Recorded live at Club Cantare, Boston in October 1st, 1989 Label: Enja (1991) Total time: 54:18 This duet date from 1989 demonstrates the deep blues feeling and technical mastery Archie Shepp has on the tenor saxophone. Comprised of four standards -- "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," "Body and Soul," "Pannonica," and "'Round Midnight" -- this set is one of Shepp's most enjoyable ever. The reasons are myriad, but it is in large part due to the fluid, loping bass of Richard Davis. Recorded in a club in front of a live audience, Shepp digs deep into his own history of influential tenor players and comes out not wanting, but on par with them, from Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis to Sonny Rollins to John Coltrane. His playing here is big, meaty, and warm, full of subtle emotions as well as bleating cries. Davis' sense of time and melody is nearly incredible on the title track and on "'Round Midnight." The interplay Shepp shares with him is tasty, coming from fragmentary elements in Monk's changes; Shepp and Davis move around the lyric and cut to the heart of the tune's color and ambiguity. It's a haunting version and one that offers a completely different reading of the tune over 17 minutes. On "Pannonica," Shepp's blues feeling comes out of Ben Webster as well as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and his soloing is full of warmth, humor, and a ragged sort of elegance. This -- like Shepp's date with Horace Parlan, Goin' Home -- is a major addition to the saxophonist's catalog. ~ Thom Yurek, AMG |

Artist: Anthony Wonsey Album: Another Perspective Label: Evidence Year: 1997 Quality: 44100Hz stereo 320Kbps Total time: 65:08 Throughout this fine trio outing with bassist Christian McBride and drummer Carl Allen, pianist Anthony Wonsey demonstrates his expertise in straight-ahead jazz. His very interesting repertoire includes four Bud Powell tunes, two originals, Nicholas Payton's "Herbie's Hands," Hank Jones' catchy "We're All Together" and a pair of standards. Wonsey sometimes sounds close to Powell, while at other times, he lets his own musical personality shine through. Excellent music in the bop mainstream. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges (1959) |

Artists - Gerry Mulligan, Johnny Hodges Album - Gerry Mulligan meets Johnny Hodges Genre - Jazz, Cool Label - Verve Year - 1959, release - 2006 Quality - FLAC, (231 MB w. scans) Total time - 33:26 AMG Raiting: Repost with new lossless links from Mr.hungaropitecus. Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. Mulligan contributed the gorgeous ballad "What's the Rush" (where he sat back to enjoy Hodges' solo and never plays his own horn), the easygoing swinger "Bunny," and the brisk cooker "18 Carrots (For Rabbit)," the latter which its composer would revisit with his Concert Jazz Band. The veteran alto saxophonist contributed the low-key ballad "Shady Side," the sassy blues "Back Beat" (later re-recorded by Hodges during a still unreleased 1960 studio meeting with Ben Webster), and "What It's All About," another potent blues. Throughout the date, the two saxophonists blend beautifully and complement one another's efforts, even though this was their only opportunity to record together in the studio. Sadly, no alternate takes or unissued numbers (at least two of which exist) have been added to this long anticipated reissue. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Coleman Hawkins - Stanley Dance Sessions |

 |
Artist - Coleman Hawkins Album - Stanley Dance Sessions Label - Lonehill Jazz Years:1958, 1955 Release - 2006 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 169 mb Total time: 78:16 In February 1958 Stanley Dance oversaw two recording sessions headed up by Coleman Hawkins. By this point in his long and eventful career, Hawkins was still an eminently sophisticated improviser. His tone was gradually beginning to harden and his way of handling the changes could swiftly become downright rambunctious when tempos and occasions called for extroverted exposition. There is, at times, a thrilling gruffness to the Hawkins of the late '50s. During the course of an extended jam like the 11-minute "Bird of Prey," the listener is pleasantly buffeted by Hawkins and trumpeter Buck Clayton and given a chance to recuperate during solos by bassist Ray Brown and pianist Hank Jones. Hawk's legendary ballad artistry is beautifully displayed on "My One and Only Love" and "You've Changed." Here he taps into the gentleness that enabled him, during the early '30s, to become the first truly dignified interpreter of ballads on his instrument. A session Hawk shared with Roy Eldridge has excellent work by bassist George Duvivier. The drummer on both dates was Mickey Sheen. "Honey Flower" and "Nabob" belong among the most laid-back extended romps that Hawkins and Eldridge ever participated in. For dessert, the producers of this reissue have included a segment of a live performance heard at the Phytian Temple in New York on November 7, 1955. Emcee Al "Jazzbo" Collins, after a bit of friendly hyperbole, asks Hawkins to deliver a brief unaccompanied solo ("Foolin' Around"), and a delicious seven-minute rendition of "The Man I Love" supported by Shadow Wilson, Wendell Marshall, and once again, the mighty Hank Jones. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide |

Artists: The Rolling Stones Album: Metamorphosis Label: Decca Year: 1975 Genre: Rock, Blues-Rock Format: mp3/ CBR 320 kbps, 44.1kHz, Stereo Size: 85,0 Mb Though it remains the only Rolling Stones outtakes collection album ever to be officially released, Metamorphosis is one of those albums that has been slighted by almost everyone who has touched it, a problem that lies in its genesis. While both the Stones and former manager Allen Klein agreed that some form of archival release was necessary, if only to stem the then-ongoing flow of bootlegs, they could not agree on how to present it. Of the two, the band's own version of the album, compiled by Bill Wyman, probably came closest to the fan's ideal, cherrypicking the vaults for some of the more legendary outtakes and oddities for a bird's-eye view of the entire band's creative brilliance. -->> |

Artist: Earl Anderza Album: Outa Sight Label: Pacific Jazz Year: 1962 Genre: West Coast Jazz Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Size: 78 MB (+ Scans) A lost treasure from the glory days of the LA soul jazz bop scene of the early 60s! Alto player Earl Anderza has this crazy tone that's unlike anything we've ever heard -- and he plays with a calculated approach to atonality that hints at later work by Ayler and others -- but which comes across here a lot more straight ahead. Unlike Ayler, Anderza is backed by a tight soul jazz combo that includes stunning work by pianist Jack Wilson, one of our all-time favorite players -- working here on both straight piano and electric harpsichord -- which has a very crazy sound! Other players include George Morrow and Jimmy Bond on bass, plus Donald Dean on drums -- and titles include "Blues Baroque", "Freeway", "Benign", and a great version of Wilson's modal classic "Outa Sight"! ~ Dusty Groove America |

Artist: Sarah Vaughan Album: In Hi-Fi (+9) Label: Columbia Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 kbit/s Size: 268 MB & 143 MB Time: 64:42 Most of Sarah Vaughan's Columbia recordings were on the commercial side, but not the memorable selections on this wonderful CD reissue. She recorded eight selections in 1950 with an octet that included trumpeter Miles Davis, trombonist Benny Green, the remarkably cool clarinetist Tony Scott and tenorman Budd Johnson. This CD adds alternate takes to seven of the numbers, increasing the discography of both Sassy and Miles. This version of "Ain't Misbehavin'" is a true classic (with memorable eight-bar solos by each of the four horns); "Mean to Me" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" are gems, and the other performances are not far behind. In addition, Vaughan sings two versions of "The Nearness of You" in 1949; there is also a previously unknown recording of "It's All In the Mind," and three orchestra numbers from 1951 and 1953 wrap up the outstanding reissue. Sassy has rarely sounded better. Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuideREPOST with new links |
