Artist: Ella Fitzgerald Album: Ella Fitzgerald 1945 – 1947 The Chronogical Years: 1945-1947 Original Release Date: 1998 Label: Classics Genre: Jazz Vocal Format, bitrate: MP3/320 kbps Size: 133 MB Welcome to a richly rewarding segment of the all too often overlooked plateau that lies between Ella Fitzgerald's recordings with Chick Webb's orchestra during the second half of the 1930s and her triumphant reign as one of the world's most popular jazz singers during the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. The recordings she made between February 26, 1945, and March 1, 1947, illustrate this woman's amazing versatility as she teamed up with an extraordinarily variegated range of vocalists and instrumentalists. Her pleasant collaborations with the Ink Spots and the Delta Rhythm Boys and a few titles with big-band accompaniment serve as appetizers for "Stone Cold Dead in the Market (He Had It Coming)," a disturbingly funny calypso number featuring Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5. Here Ella and Louis put across a performance even more outrageous than Sarah Vaughan's eccentric West Indian suicide song "De Gas Pipe She's Leaking, Joe." While Jordan's band grinds out spicy Caribbean dance music, Ella proudly explains how, fed up with being physically abused, she beat her husband to death with various kitchen utensils. Jordan, who calmly states that he's singing his portion of the duet while stretched out inanimate in the shopping district, admits that he was an abusive drunkard who often beat his wife. This incredibly humorous sendup of the horribly tragic and all too common specter of domestic violence leading to homicide is sustained largely by the female vocalist, who repeatedly describes her husband-killing technique, defiantly exclaims "he had it coming," and even communes with the spirit of Bessie Smith by insisting that she'd do it again even "if I was to die in the electric chair." This interesting compilation also contains a pair of duets with Louis Armstrong, some pleasant performances backed by bands led by pianists Billy Kyle and Eddie Heywood, and some really wild V-Disc collaborations with drummer and scat singer Buddy Rich. Never a dull moment! ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide |

Artist: Ella Fitzgerald Album: Ella Fitzgerald 1941 – 1944 The Chronogical Years: 1941-1944 Original Release Date: 1997 Label: Allegro Corporation Genre: Jazz Vocal Format, bitrate: MP3/320 kbps Size: 129 MB This Classics CD traces Ella Fitzgerald's recordings from the beginning of her solo career. Having finally broken up the Chick Webb ghost orchestra, Ella mostly recorded ballads during her first few years as a solo artist; her jazz and scat singing would develop much more quickly starting in 1945. On some selections she is joined by a mundane vocal group called the Four Keys, but her three collaborations with the Ink Spots (particularly "Cow Cow Boogie" and "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall") are quite delightful. Other highpoints from this release (which finds Ella at 24 to 27 years old) include "This Love of Mine," "My Heart and I Decided" and "I'm Confessin'." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist - Astor Piazzolla Album - Onda Nueve Genre - Jazz, Nuevo Tango Label - West Wind Latina (2213) Year - 1992 Quality - MP3@320 kbps (CD-rip) Size - 76,2 mb + 95,4 mb Total time - 75:21 Hi, everyone. My First Post!!
This is one of my desert island albums. There is one track worth a whole album. It's a "Tristezas de un doble A". The Nonet gave its first major sequence of concerts at the Teatro Regina - not all of them well attended, as this chapter's epigraph indicates. Piazzolla used the concerts to showcase important additons to his repertory: "Vardarito," " Tristezas de un Doble A," "Zum," "En 3X4," "Oda para un hippie," "Homenaje al 40," "Onda 9," "Zurdo," the "9 series" ("Preludio 9," "Divertimento 9," "Fuga 9"),"Homenaje a Cordoba." These pieces soon appeared on two RCA-Victor albums that were very well received, recorded in January and October 1972. Outstanding among them were "Vardarito" (a tribute to the recently deceased Elvino Vardaro), "Onda 9" (with its long improvised piano passages), "Oda para un hippie" (in which guitar and percussion improvise splendidly), and the long, meditative "Tristezas de un Doble A." The bandeneon solos in "Tristezas," with their shifts of mood from tenderness to something like irritation or impatience, were considered by Hugo Baralis "the most beautiful thing Astor ever did." Piazzolla ranked it among his best compositions. The "double A" of its title ostensibly referred to the classic "Arnold AA" bandoneons he himself used; Horacio Ferrer later divulged that it really meant Astor-Amelita. |

Artist: Ella Fitzgerald Album: Ella Fitzgerald 1940 – 1941 The Chronogical Years: 1940-1941, release: 1996 Label: Classics Format, bitrate: MP3/320 kbps Size: 134 MB The sixth in Classics' six-CD series that completely reissues all of Ella Fitzgerald's early recordings has her final 23 performances as the head of what was formerly the Chick Webb Orchestra. Just 22 during most of this period, she is generally in superb voice and the ballads (highlighted by "Shake Down the Stars," "Taking a Chance on Love," "The One I Love" and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man") are frequently exquisite; her expertise at scatting would come a few years later. It's recommended as are all of the entries in this valuable series (which is superior to GRP's Decca program). ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

The third album from BeatleJazz is consistent with the group’s two prior releases in concept and vision, presenting inventive jazz arrangements of the most beloved music of the 20th Century. But this time the trio has enlisted a little help from their friends, who happen to be some of the biggest names in jazz, and whose stellar contributions help lift this CD to another level. John Scofield (guitar), Michael Brecker (saxophone), Randy Brecker (trumpet), and Mike Stern (guitar) all provide memorable guest performances. The repertoire choices are outstanding. The results are totally refreshing, full of musical virtuosity, but remaining true to the essence of each song. Expect jazz radio to embrace it, to a Top 10 level. Expect the critics to endorse it. Talk about ”getting better all the time” ...whew! Check this out! |

Artist: Oscar Peterson Album: Oscar Peterson in Russia Label: Pablo Year: 1974 (release 1996) Producer: Norman Granz Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Time: 1.36:05 Size: 99 + 121 MB Although the music of this two-LP set was recording at a concert in the Soviet Union, it is a fairly typical recital by pianist Oscar Peterson with no obvious reference to the exotic location. Peterson takes five selections unaccompanied, performs four others as duets with bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, and adds drummer Jake Hanna to the nine remaining numbers. Other than three originals, all of the music is comprised of veteran standards and, although no real surprises occur, the results are what one would expect from the great Oscar Peterson, who alternates hard swingers with sensitive ballad renditions. ~ Review by Scott Yanow, AMG.Repost with new links |

Artist: Kevin Mahogany Album: Double Rainbow Year: 1993 Label: Enja Format: mp3/320 kbps Size: 158 MB (including scans) In February 1993, he recorded his debut album "Double Rainbow", a selection of seldom-heard ballads, bop tunes, and blues. A special interest is put on the song lyrics, including words by "vocalizers" such as Eddie Jefferson, Jon Hendricks and Oscar Brown Jr., and even the great novelist James Baldwin. The album features Kevin's remarkably rich and warm voice in a wide range of style, accompanied by the skillful swinging of Kenny Barron (piano), Ralph Moore (tenorsax), Ray Drummond (bass) and Lewis Nash (drums). Released in June 1993, "Double Rainbow" met with sudden critical acclaim. "The ballads - always a test of any jazz talent - are appropriately touching but never overly sentimental. And while it can be an acquired taste, only a handful of vocalists have ever scatted with the overwhelming power of Kevin Mahogany" |

Tony Williams was a phenomenal drummer - good enough to join the Miles Davis Quintet at the age of 17. When he left Davis in 1969, he formed his own group, Lifetime, with guitarist John McLaughlin and organist Larry Young. Lifetime was influential in the world of jazz-rock, although I found some of its recordings hard to bear because of the prevailing noise level - especially from Larry Young's abrasive Hammond organ. Drummer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist John Scofield were both influenced by Lifetime and decided to form a trio with organist Larry Goldings, paying tribute to Tony Williams. As they played together, they realised that they should perform more than Lifetime's repertoire, so they called themselves Trio Beyond. |

Artist: Glen Velez Album: Assyrian Rose Format: FLAC & mp3 (320k/s) Size: 267 & 108 MB (scans) Label: CMP Total time: 46:24 Genre: world-jazz, percussion Assyrian Rose continues the style he developed on his earlier CMP release Seven Heaven, with Layne Redmond helping out on various frame drums and Steve Gorn playing bansuri and South American flutes. They are joined by Jon Clark on French horn and Howard Levy on harmonica and piano, adding a greater melodic range to the music. Glen plays his usual variety of frame drums (from Spain and Morocco), Egyptian tambourine and various other percussion instruments. The result is a cross-cultural potpourri of earth-jazz stylings, with Glen's pulsating rhythms leading. The album ends with a solo on one of Glen's tambourines, revealing his mastery of this instrument that plays such a central role in Arabic music. - AMG |
