Milt Jackson - Sunflower (1972)
     Artist: Milt Jackson
     Album: Sunflower
     Label: CTI/Columbia/Legacy
     Year: 1972, release 1997
     Format, btrate: MP3@320 Kbit/s
     Time: 0.43:45
     Size: 100 MB
AMG Rating: Milt Jackson - Sunflower (1972)

Vibraphonist Milt Jackson recorded three albums for CTI in the early '70s; this album is the best of the trio. The Don Sebesky arrangements for the strings showcase Jackson well, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and pianist Herbie Hancock make impressions the four songs (highlighted by Hubbard's "Sunflower") receive fine treatment. -- Review by Scott Yanow, AMG.

Roy Ayers - Stones Soul Picnic (1968)
     Artist: Roy Ayers
     Album: Stoned Soul Picnic
     Format: FLAC & mp3 (320 k/s)
     Size: 227 & 91 MB (scans)
     Label: Atlantic (Master, 2005)
     Total time: 38:40

Stoned Soul Picnic dates from the earlier part of Roy Ayers' career as a leader, before he delved heavily into R&B and funk fusions and instead concentrated more on soul-jazz grooves. Ayers leads a septet including such big names as pianist Herbie Hancock, altoist Gary Bartz, bassist Ron Carter, and flutist Hubert Laws. The Laura Nyro-penned title track foreshadows Ayers' later forays beyond the boundaries of pure jazz, and the group keeps the groove percolating nicely throughout, making Stoned Soul Picnic one of Ayers' better jazz-oriented outings. ~ by Steve Huey, AMG

Astor Piazzolla - Adios Nonino (2003)     Artist: Astor Piazzolla
     Album: Adios Nonino
     Label: Membran International
     Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s
     Date: 1960/2003
     Genre: Jazz / Tango Argentine
     Total time: 62:59
     Size: 72 + 71 MB

It's not hyperbole to say that Astor Piazzolla is the single most important figure in the history of tango, a towering giant whose shadow looms large over everything that preceded and followed him. Piazzolla's place in Argentina's greatest cultural export is roughly equivalent to that of Duke Ellington in jazz -- the genius composer who took an earthy, sensual, even disreputable folk music and elevated it into a sophisticated form of high art. But even more than Ellington, Piazzolla was also a virtuosic performer with a near-unparalleled mastery of his chosen instrument, the bandoneon, a large button accordion noted for its unwieldy size and difficult fingering system.

Barney Kessel - Easy Like (1999)

Other than four songs apiece released by Onyx and Verve, the CD reissue of Easy Like, Vol. 1 has guitarist Barney Kessel's first sessions as a leader, performances which launched his longtime association with the Contemporary label. Augmented by two "new" alternate takes, the set features Kessel in boppish form with quintets in 1953 and 1956 featuring, either Bud Shank or Buddy Collette doubling on flute and alto. Kessel shows off the influence of Charlie Christian throughout the performances, with the highlights including "Easy Like," "Lullaby of Birdland," "North of the Border," and the accurately titled "Salute to Charlie Christian."/by Scott Yanow, AMG

Let me introduce another Verve's compilation of Great Oscar's rare recordings, presently with not less great musicians, such as Lester Young, Milt Jackson, Anita O'Day, Sonny Stitt, Roy Eldridge, Buddy Rich, Fred Astaire, Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton, Ben Webster, Ella Fitzgerald. I hope you'll enjoy it as I do...

By far the least pleasant aspect of assembling this collection was deciding which of Oscar Peterson's friends would not make the "A" list. For Peterson (b. 1925) recorded with virtually every major figure of the 1940s and '50s, and in most cases sharing the spotlight brought out the best in both the brilliant pianist and his co-stars (or leaders).

Teddy Wilson - Stomping at the Savoy (1967)     Artist: Teddy Wilson

     Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s

     AMG Rating: ****

Strange as it seems, Teddy Wilson only made one record as a leader during 1960-66. His playing had not declined in the slightest, but the veteran swing pianist's style was overlooked in favor of newer players, and although still a household name in the jazz world, he was somewhat neglected. In 1967, with this excellent CD and its companion, Air Mail Special, Wilson returned to a more regular recording schedule. Recorded in London, this studio session finds Wilson joined by some fine English musicians (including clarinetist Dave Shepherd and vibraphonist Ronnie Gleaves) for a spirited runthrough of swing standards. Although the date on the CD says 1969, it is definitely 1967. ~ Review by Scott Yanow, AMG.

Jaco Pastorius in New York (1985)     Artist: Jaco Pastorius
Album: Jaco Pastorius in New York
     Label: Gema
     Year: 1985
     Format, bitrate: MP3,320 kbps CBR
     Total time: 1 h: 47 min

His New York live performances in an intimate club setting bring Jaco together with Hiram Bullock, Kenwood Dennard and others in an intense and exciting musical dialogue. As always, Jaco's roots are everpresent; reggae, jazz, R&B and rock combine to create what Jaco himself aptly termed "Punk Jazz". Pastorius in N.Y. finds Jaco, Kenwood and Hiram joined by friends Delmar Brown, Alex Foster, Michael Gerber, Jerry Gonzales and Butch Thomas for a collective run at some wildly diverse material. Delmar's beautiful PROMISE LAND and Jaco classics CONTINUUM and TEEN TOWN draw inspired performances and Delmar, Michael and Jaco all take a chance at the microphone.
