     The material, as well, is pure gold: Tormй is as buoyant and exuberant as he's ever been, resulting in fantastic, definitive versions of inimitable standards like "Lullaby of Birdland," "Fascinating Rhythm," and "The Lady Is a Tramp." There... are a few down-tempo numbers ("The Blues," "Keeping Myself for You"), but even on these Tormй sounds like he can't wait to get to the next song and really stretch out. After its first release in 1956 as "Mel Tormй With The Marty Paich Dek-tette", the album was reissued many times under various titles (Lulu's Back in Town, The Tormй Touch), but surprisingly never on CD.      No two ways about it, the most influential slide guitarist of the postwar period was Elmore James, hands down. Although his early demise from heart failure kept him from enjoying the fruits of the '60s blues revival as his contemporaries Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf did, James left a wide influential trail behind him. And that influence continues to the present time — in approach, attitude and tone — in just about every guitar player who puts a slide on his finger and wails the blues. As a guitarist, he wrote the book, his slide style influencing the likes of Hound Dog Taylor, Joe Carter, his cousin Homesick James and J.B. Hutto, while his seldom-heard single-string work had an equally profound effect on B.B. King and Chuck Berry. His signature lick — an electric updating of Robert Johnson's "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom" and one that Elmore recorded in infinite variations from day one to his last session — is so much a part of the essential blues fabric of guitar licks that no one attempting to play slide guitar can do it without being compared to Elmore James. Others may have had more technique — Robert Nighthawk and Earl Hooker immediately come to mind — but Elmore had the sound and all the feeling.

Hello my friends around the globe!

To finish the "Elements Saga", this is their second CD, pretty difficult to find
as it should be OOP, like the first one. Definitely a must-to-have in your collections,
if you don't already own it. I've bought these CD's in Amsterdam many years ago
(for NL friends, 39.95 was the "prijs" at that time, can't remember when, but it was
at least 14-15 years ago).

     Нет нужды доказывать, что традиционный джаз сохраняет у нас стабильную популярность. Он имеет более чем полувековые традиции (еще со времен "Московских ребят" Александра Цфасмана). И классных мастеров этого стиля у нас немало, и музыки такой много, и слушают ее люди с удовольствием. Тем не менее, на профессиональной концертной сцене существуют лишь два диксиленда - ленинградский и уральский, а их поразительное долголетие (первому двадцать пять, второму восемнадцать) должно бы подсказать необходимость расширения этого жанра в концертной практике, привлечения к ней лучших коллективов.
"Капелла Дикси" - ансамбль известный. Вот уже десять лет ему горячо аплодируют на джазовых фестивалях, приглашают участвовать в телевизионных передачах, выступать на фестивалях "Московская осень". Очень приятно, что коллектив, как говорится, не стоит на месте, в нем не прекращается творческая работа, что и подтверждает содержание его второй пластинки. ~ Алексей Баташев

've seen Les Doigts de l'homme for the first time at the Django Festival 2008 at Liberchies(hometown of Django Reinhardt in Belgium)and I was completely blown away from their fresh and original gipsy jazz. Lead guitar player, Olivier Kikteff,
demonstrates an extraordinary virtuosity, rarely seen, but the songs are very original and beautiful as well. The mix of Selmer guitars, banjo's, ouds and cajon and the different tempi are the trademark of Les Doigts de l'homme. I can highly recommend this most recent CD from Les Doigts de l'homme to everyone who loves the guitar, loves manousch jazz, cross-over
music,etc... Buy this, you won't regret it!!!

     Although Rosemary Clooney had a major part in the famous film White Christmas back in 1954, this was her first full Christmas album and it was a big seller when it was released late in 1996. From the jazz standpoint, there is not much here, as Clooney is accompanied by a huge orchestra conducted and mostly arranged by Peter Matz. Although there are a few brief solos from altoist Gary Foster, tenor saxophonist Dan Higgins, trombonist Chauncey Welsch and trumpeter Warren Luening, the music is essentially nostalgic middle-of-the-road pop with Clooney joined on several numbers by the Earl Brown Singers (who also take brief a cappella versions of some veteran Christmas tunes); one tune apiece features appearances by Michael Feinstein and Rosemary's brother Nick Clooney. But jazz content aside, Rosemary Clooney is in good voice, and the heartfelt emotions that she expresses on these Yuletide favorites communicate quite well. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
