Herbie Hancock - My Point of View (1963) |

Artist: Herbie Hancock Album: My Point of View Year: 1963 Label: Blue Note Quality: MP3 @320 kbps Time: 42:37 Size: 107 mb, with 5% file recovery AMG Rating: In this 1963 recording session, pianist Herbie Hancock had a chance to work with a septet that could highlight his burgeoning skills as an arranger and composer. With Hancock's inventive sense of voicings already defined, it's a happy mix of inspired charts and spirited blowing that fuses the hard bop of trumpeter Donald Byrd and tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley with the bluesy approach of guitarist Grant Green and Hancock's own fluent soloing and incisive comping. Also notable is the explosive young drummer Tony Williams, who was already showing the distinctive fire that would soon ignite Miles Davis's band. The track "Blind Man, Blind Man" is a funky romp that clearly builds on Hancock's remarkable success with the earlier "Watermelon Man" and is a harbinger of the pop success he'd later enjoy with the Headhunters. - AmazonREPOST with new links |

Artist: Sonny Criss Album: The Complete Imperial Sessions Year: 1956 Label: Blue Note Number of Discs: 2 Quality: MP3 @320kbps Size: 246 mb, with Covers + 5% file recovery This double disc reissue on Blue Note contains the three releases that alto saxophonist Sonny Criss did for Imperial: Jazz U.S.A., Go Man!, and Plays Cole Porter. These sessions were all recorded in 1956 at a time when Criss had honed his amazing bebop alto precision. These 34 performances contain only five of his originals and are surrounded by mainly standards. The bands consisted of solid lineups with Sonny Clark or Kenny Drew on piano; Barney Kessel on guitar; Leroy Vinnegar, Buddy Clark or Bill Woodson on bass; Larry Bunker on vibes; and Larance Marable or Chuck Thompson taking care of drumming duties. While Criss had a career that erratically spanned the '70s, these Imperial sessions (reissued in glorious mono) contained highly regarded performances of passionate blues, moving ballads, and energetic up- tempo pieces. - AMGREPOST with new links |

James Cotton - High Compression |

 |
 |
Artist: James Cotton Album: High Compression Original Release Date: 1984 Number of Discs: 1 Label: Alligator Records Format: MP3 V0 Size: 00:39:35 Time: 67,23 MB One of James Cotton's best studio albums, HIGH COMPRESSION neatly splits the difference between traditional '50s and '60s Chicago blues and more contemporary funk influences. About half the cuts feature his '80s touring band, who put a modern on Bobby Bland's "Ain't Doing Too Bad" and have a ball covering Steve Miller's "Ying Yang." The other cuts feature veteran Chicago sidemen Magic Slim and Pinetop Perkins. The sound gets low down and Muddy Waters-esque, particularly on "23 Hours Too Long," which gives rise to one of Cotton's most impassioned performances ever, both vocally and on harp. |

Artist: Carmen McRae And Sammy Davis Jr Album: Boy Meet Year: 1955 Genre: Vocal Jazz Label: Decca/released in 2005 by Verve Quality: MP3;128kbps Size: 34.5MB By the time they joined forces, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Carmen McRae had both fought long and hard to transcend their early influences-Frank Sinatra for Davis, Billie Holiday for McRae. With Boy Meets Girl and the Gershwins' magnum opus, Porgy and Bess, they emerged as distinctive voices in their own right, laying claim to everything from classic Tin Pan Alley material to one of the most socially relevant works in the American canon. From tender and touching to full-throttle exuberance, both sang as if their very lives were on the line. |

1964: Mose Allison - The Word From Mose |
Cool, Allison Mose |
 |
 |
Artist: Mose Allison Album: The Word From Mose Year: 1964 Label: Atlantic Quality: mp3@320 + all covers Size: 75 mb This iconoclastic performer has sometimes been described as a country blues player, perhaps leading to images of a blind man standing on a corner playing a guitar with a bottleneck slide. In reality, Mose Allison is from a much more cosmopolitan tradition, and the country blues adage comes from attempts to describe the sound he gets playing light, swinging jazz with... More a distinctly rural, Southern influence. This album, from one of many he recorded for Atlantic, actually contains examples of him taking material from the real country blues heritage and reworking it into his own style, to brilliant effect. His "New Parchman Farm" is a fantastic piece, as he changes what was once a stark, depressing prison blues into something else again. Perhaps this version would be more suited to white-collar criminals such as the Watergate mob, basking in upper-class prisons complete with tennis courts. At any rate, this is a performance that only the most hardened individual would be able to listen to without a smile cracking their face. Like most of Allison's releases, this one suffers from a handful of tracks that although not quite throwaway, surely lack the substance of the best songs here. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide |

Les Paul & Mary Ford - Guitar Wizard |

Artists: Les Paul/Mary Ford Album: Guitar Wizard Label: Proper Pairs Release: 2002 Format MP3 320 Kbps / Flac Size: 100431 KB ~ 53609 KB Since harmony and singing groups was my main interest in the '50's, Mary Ford was at the top of my list of incredible singers. Actually, I discovered Les Paul through hearing her! And more than his out of this world ability to play guitar, Les's knowledge of multi-tracked recording techniques pulled me in closer. I couldn't get enough of her (their) records. I, as a teenager, as young as 13, would sing the third part harmony to her "self" duets, I.E., Vaya Con Dios, Mockingbird Hill. She was as smooth as velvet. She still is a part of every vocal production I work on. She truly is an inspiration. I was deeply saddened by her passing and still feel robbed about not hearing more about her throughout her career and her life. When Mary died in 1977, not much was published about her. I've always been interested in what her relationship with Les was from a collaborating point of view. What must it have been like developing their sounds? What were Mary's interest's ? What caused their split and what did she go on to do? I know they had children. I once met Les with Les, Jr. at Harvey Radio on 45th Street in Manhattan in the '60's. Les was buying a mic for him, as I recall. I was just there buying some audio supplies at the time for Skitch Henderson (my other employer at Studio 3). And I worked with Gene Paul in the '70's at Atlantic Records during vocal group, The Manhattan Transfer's first Atlantic album. I guess my love of her work crossed the barriers of unknown forces because I've received a series of emails from one who had seen this site and I asked her about Mary. Here is was she's told me ~ Jim Reeves |
