Billie Holiday - Billie Holiday Complete Edition Vol. 16 1946-1948 |

Artist: Billie Holday Album: Billie Holiday Complete Edition Vol. 16 1946-1948 Label: Masters of Jazz Recording Date: Dec 27, 1946-Dec 10, 1948 Release Date: 9/12/2000 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 73:26 Size: 95+82MB Vol. 16 in the exhaustively complete Billie Holiday chronology as issued by the Masters of Jazz label contains a swath of recordings made between December 1946 and December 1948, including rejected takes -- some of them only a minute or a minute-and-a-half long. This material represents a portion of a transitional period bridging Holiday's classic early small group sessions for the Vocalion, Columbia and Commodore labels (1933-1944) and the deeply revealing music she recorded for producer Norman Granz's Verve label during the final decade of her life. Some of these tracks were issued to the public on 10" 78 rpm records bearing the Decca label. "The Blues Are Brewin'," with backing by John Simmons and his orchestra, is a studio version of a song that Holiday had sung in September 1946 in the motion picture New Orleans, accompanied by Louis Armstrong's orchestra. Coincidentally, "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" was sung by both Armstrong and Holiday, not as a duet but as a shared performance given at Carnegie Hall in February 1947; each sang one chorus, and Lady Day also performed her own composition, "Don't Explain." Four more titles were waxed at the "Decca" studios five days later, this time with backing by Bob Haggart's orchestra. The Norman Granz/Billie Holiday project was well underway in May 1947 when she sang four songs at Carnegie Hall as part of the Jazz at the Philharmonic variety show. Accompanied only by pianist Bobby Tucker, the singer expressed herself most eloquently in that concert setting. More studio recordings were made for Decca in December 1948, with Bobby Tucker and his trio, as well as a vocal group called the Stardusters. Some other tracks are quite rare: "The Man I Love" was performed on the Arthur Godfrey Show of January 13, 1947; a version of "I Cover the Waterfront," with support from Lionel Hampton's orchestra, was broadcast to Switzerland on July 7, 1947; "That Ole Devil Called Love" was privately recorded at a party in Los Angeles thrown by Babs Gonzales. The party recording, sounding rather muddy with lots of people talking in the background, may date from as late as May 27, 1949, which falls outside of this compilation's stated time frame. Discrepancies are bound to crop up in a body of work this extensive; it all depends on which historical discography (or, to use a 21st century neologism, "sessionography") you're savoring at the moment. What really matters of course is the fact that Billie Holiday's recorded legacy is now being systematically reissued with loving attention to detail. And that's a wonderful thing. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide |

Artists - Don Byas, James Moody, Howard McGhee Album - BeBop Label - Universal/EmArCy Year - 1946/47, release - 2001 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 85,83+65,85 mb Total time - 71:14 Публикацию этого замечательного альбома посвящаю своему большому другу Tedsу Four different groups are heard on this compilation from the Jazz in Paris series. Although all groups were promoted as bop-oriented when they were overseas, the only bona fide bop musicians on the first two sessions are tenor saxophonist Don Byas and pianist Billy Taylor. The first date is jointly credited to Byas and trombonist Tyree Glenn (known for his work with Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong); Glenn is an effective soloist, even though he's firmly a swinger at heart. But it is Byas' big-toned solos that stand out, especially in Dizzy Gillespie's "Dynamo A" (also known as "Dizzy Atmosphere"), along with the effective comping and solos of the relative youngster Billy Taylor, who also contributed "Mad Monk." Trumpeter Howard McGhee leads a sextet, featuring alto saxophonist Jimmy Heath and bassist Percy Heath, sticking primarily to the leader's compositions. McGhee's writing is insignificant (especially when compared to Jimmy Heath's output over the decades which followed); better are the interpretations of Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" and Tadd Dameron's loping "Big Will." The last four tracks feature tenor saxophonist James Moody, with Byas, trombonist Nat Peck, and pianist Bernard Peiffer along for the ride. Only one is a Moody original, but in spite of the strong performances, the lousy work of the session's engineer produced consistently overmodulated recordings. The musicians deserved better. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Artist: Tony Williams Album: Lifetime The Collection Label: Columbia/Legacy Year: Recording Date Jul 1975-Jun 1976/Rel. 1992 Format: MP3@ 320 Kb/s Time: 76:22 Size: 95.4+71.8 Mb AMG rating: Хочу сегодня познакомить, всех любителей стиля fusion с замечательной работой, известного барабанщика, соратника Майлса Дэвиса. Музыканта, который за свою короткую жизнь, оставил довольно заметный след в музыке. Настоящий альбом включает в себя два LP вышедших в 75 и 76 году. Это: " Believe It" и "Million Dollar Legs". |

Artist: Kurt Rosenwinkel Trio Album: East Coast Love Affair Format: MP3@320 Kb/s Time: 48;51 Size:62+58 Mb This little-known gem captures Rosenwinkel live at Smalls, the famous New York jazz club, with Avishai Cohen on bass and Jorge Rossy on drums. Rosenwinkel's guitar style is distinctive and highly developed at this stage. Only two originals appear -- "East Coast Love Affair" and "B Blues" -- and both are mesmerizing, though quite similar in tempo and mood. |

Artist: Kurt Elling Album: Close Your Eyes Recording Date: Feb 14, 1994 - Nov 2, 1994 Label: Blue Note Format: mp3 320Kbps Time: 62:21 Size: 95 Mb + 49 Mb For his debut recording, Chicago vocalist Elling pushes the envelope, challenging listeners and his musicians with beat poetry, ranting, and his Mark Murphy-ish singing. There's quite a bit of dramatist/actor in Elling, although the romantic in him is also pretty prevalent. Acting much like a tenor saxophonist, Elling can wail and shout, expound on social themes, and scat like a demon. (By Michael G. Nastos) |

Artist: Siegel-Schwall Band Album: The Complete Vanguard Recordings and More Format: FLAC & mp3 (320k/s) Size: 1140 & 434 MB (with full artworks) Year: 1965-70 Label: Vanguard (20-bit remastered, 2001) Total time: 45:15 + 61:58 + 72:14 Is a three-CD set of the Siegel-Schwall Band -- including all four of their Vanguard albums (spanning 1966-1970) in their entirety, along with six previously unissued cuts -- too much to take at once? In a word, yes. If you're a blues-rock history nut, though -- and there must be some such listeners out there -- it is a handy collection that gathers every last shred of recorded evidence of their early years. |

Album: A Rough Guide To Mambo Artists: VA Label: Rough Guides Year: 2004 Quality: mp3@320 kbps + all covers "With its origins in Cuba and hugely influenced by the New York dancehalls and orchestras, mambo's driving rhythms and swinging horns are an original and distinctive Latin dance sound. With a golden age in the 1950s, mambo's retro chic is more popular than ever today - especially on the salsa scene where dancers eager to check out frantic mambo rhythms can expand their feet skills. The Rough Guide To Mambo is an exceptional collection from the great originators and pioneers, such as Perez Prado, Machito and Tito Puente who developed mambo history, to today's mambo artists, such as Snowboy and Mamborama, whose exploration is reinventing the genre." |

On his second album, Cincotti follows the smooth jazz-pop groove also treaded by Norah Jones, with a smattering of horn-driven swing à la Harry Connick, Jr. [i] |

Artist: Eric van der Westen's Quadrant Extended Album: The world over Year: 2007 Label: EWM records Quality: MP3 @320 kbit/s Size: ~220 MB Eric van der Westen was born on August 29 1963. His first musical steps on guitar and bass-guitar ran along hard rock and new wave trails into jazz and modern improvised music. His own ensembles always had a contemporary African-Mingus like taste. Hectic sometimes anarchistic arrangements linked to bittersweet ballads emphasize the range of his writing. Even in the quietest simplest songs there's far more than meets the eye. From halfway the nineties he has used his quintet Quadrant as the main vehicle for the projects he's set up. Projects like Eyeing P.P.ö-a multidisciplinary arts project brought him into less common ground. Me, Myself and I-Looking At The Music Of Charles Mingus in 1999 was a homage to his main influence as a bass player and composer.
