Lee Morgan - Delightfulee (1966) |

Artist: Lee Morgan Album: Delightfulee Year: 1966 Label: Blue Note (RVG Edition) Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Time: 67:30 Size: 95.3 MB + 50.2 MB AMG Rating: This CD is a 2007 reissue of Lee Morgan's 1966 album, featuring 4 bonus tracks and a great lineup of musicians. If you like Lee Morgan (and what's not to like?) then you're gonna love this one. Enjoy! This classic set by trumpeter Lee Morgan was reissued on LP in 1984. Of the four quintet numbers with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Billy Higgins, the instantly likable "Ca-Lee-So" is the most memorable, although the other three Morgan originals ("Zambia," "Nite Flite," and "The Delightful Deggie") also find the trumpeter in excellent form. An unusual aspect to this collection is that there are also two ballads ("Yesterday" and "Sunrise Sunset") that have a nonet playing Oliver Nelson arrangements behind Morgan's lyrical horn; Tyner and tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter have opportunities to take concise solos. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Keith Tippett - Twilight Etchings |

Artist: Keith TippettAlbum: Twilight EtchingsLabel: FMP Year: 1993 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: mp3, 196kb/s Size: 90MB by Thom Jurek As a vocalist, Julie Tippett is literally without peer and cannot be compared to anyone. She is a true original. Perhaps this is because of her background, which began in the '60s with Brian Auger, when she was singing soul and R&B. Entering the progressive rock world of the 1970s with compatriots like saxophonist Elton Dean (and, of course, pianist Keith Tippett), her concerns, approach to singing, and methodology as a vocalist began her process of mutation into the artist she is today. It is perhaps because of her earlier training that Tippett is able to travel so far afield in her explorations. She understands and can execute the minutiae in each element of music she incorporates into her oeuvre. Drummer Willi Kellers is largely unknown in the States, yet is an in-demand session player for many Euro jazzers and improvisers. He has been playing with Julie Tippett and Keith Tippett steadily since the 1980s. Keith Tippett, of course, is a now legendary jazz pianist who embraced free and improvisational music in the late '60s, and has stubbornly forged his own path through the morass of jazz culture since then. Twilight Etchings was recorded during the October 1993 Total Music Meeting at the Podewil in Berlin. The set is comprised of five selections, the shortest of which (over ten minutes in length) is a stunner. While Tippett and Kellers are no doubt master musicians — perhaps even greater than they appear by being able to support a vocalist like this in total improvisation — it is Julie Tippett who confounds, shocks, bewilders, and ultimately inspires the listener here. Her music — and this is clearly her music — comes out of the desire to speak, to enter language, and to communicate from the deepest recesses of the human spirit. And enter language it does, with every device at her command. In fact, singing of this type — it is the purest kind of singing — is nothing less than a shamanistic exercise: journeying for the sake of discovery. This would also explain the titles of the tracks included here, mediations on nature and mysticism and their interrelation: "Pebbled Rain," "Song of the Desert Cactus," "The Masked Procession," "The Curious Coyote," "Dance of the Salamanders." This is not to say that Keith Tippett and Willi Kellers aren't essential to the exercise; they are. On "Song of the Desert Cactus," Tippett's piano solo spaces out chords over a ten-finger reach, pronouncing the sevenths and thirds over a minor-key backdrop, as Kellers double times him on the tops of his cymbals, walking to Tippett's deliberate crawl. Julie Tippett eventually re-enters first with a whistle, then a breathy whisper, and finally a moan so deep and long it seems to come from inside time itself. Rhythms from the entire trio alternate, doubling, tripling, and slowing each other, stacking up like chants led by Julie Tippett until the track finally soars off weightless and free... |

Artist: Horace Silver Album: It's Got to Be Funky Format: FLAC + MP3@320Kbps Size: 541 & 176 MB (scans) Label: Columbia Total playing: 75:51 After a 13-year period in which he mostly recorded for his private Silveto label, pianist/composer Horace Silver was rediscovered by Columbia for this session. Rather than featuring a standard quintet as he did throughout his career, the funky pianist is heard with his trio, a six-piece brass ensemble and guest tenors Red Holloway, Eddie Harris and Branford Marsalis; Andy Bey contributes four vocals. All of the music (except for a remake of "Song for My Father") was new and served as proof that the master of jazz-funk had not lost his stuff. - by Scott Yanow, AMG

Artists: Martin and Wood Medeski Album: Zaebos: the Book of Angels Vol.11 Label:Tzadik Records Year: 2008 Quality: MP3; 320 kbps Size: 75,6 mb Time: 54:20 Label: Tzadik Master improvisers that they are, Medeski, Martin and Wood nevertheless do nothing without purpose. Their participation in John Zorn's Masada Series is just such a decisive action. Zaebos: The Book of Angels Vol. 11 was recorded in January and March of 2008, just prior to MMW's announcement of its year-long project dubbed "The Radiolarian Series" (whereby the group would compose, play live, then record three different batches of new original material). Thus, to take part in Zorn's exploration of his musical heritage, while not wholly unlike what the trio does on its own, nevertheless affords a certain healthy detachment from a musical endeavor, before becoming immersed wholly in an ambitious one of its own. |

Dave Bailey - Gettin into Somethin' - 1960 |

Artist: Dave Bailey Album: Gettin into Somethin' Label: Epic Year: 1960 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 76,8mb Heavy duty hardbop -- and the rarest of Dave Bailey's sides for Epic! The record grooves as massively as his One and Two Feet In the Gutter albums, and it was recorded with a similar lineup that includes Horace Parlan on piano, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Charlie Rouse on tenor, and Clark Terry on trumpet. Dave's drumming is mighty and soulful, and the set smokes with a lively rolling groove that mixes hardbop and soul jazz into a raw early 60s sound. Includes the 17 minute long jam "Blues For JP", plus "Slop Jah", "Little Old Mongoose", and "Evad Smurd". One you almost never find a copy of in the original pressing! |

Dave Bailey - One Foot In The Gutter - 1960 |

 |
Artist: Dave Bailey Album: One Foot In The Gutter Label: Classic Records (Columbia)ic Year: 1960 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 100 & 7 mb Dave Bailey's One Foot in the Gutter is the first of several dates which originally appeared on Epic in the early 1960s but has been hard to find until this CD reissue came out. The veteran drummer literally leads a blowing session in the studio without any prepared arrangements or set list, inspired by an invited audience of friends and jazz fans. The musicians... More include the outstanding front line of Clark Terry, Junior Cook and Curtis Fuller, along with Horace Parlan and Peck Morrison joining the leader in the rhythm section. The music is consistently loose, fresh and very inspired; egos have been checked at the door as everyone aspires to work together to produce the best results. Clark Terry's sauntering bluesy "One Foot in the Gutter" gets things off on the right foot, followed by a burning interpretation of Thelonious Monk's "Well You Needn't," featuring Terry's almost conversational fluegelhorn, as well as an intense, well-paced tenor sax solo by Cook and an inventive turn in the spotlight by Parlan. The finale is an extended workout of Clifford Brown's "Sandu" which pushes everyone to a peak. The results were so successful that additional sessions (Gettin' Into Something and Two Feet in the Gutter soon followed; this release is strong proof that talented musicians don't have to meticulously plan out their set to produce timeless music. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Artist: Various Artists Album: Portraits In Jazz Label: Winner Record Ltd Year: 2008 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps Time: 79:31 79:23 Size: 100x3 + 58.9Mb |

Keith Tippett - Blueprint |

 |
Artist: Keith Tippett Album: Blueprint Label: BGO Year: 1972 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: mp3, 192kb/s Size: 53MB Recorded after Keith Tippett's 50-piece orchestra project Centipede, Blueprint couldn't make a stronger contrast. This scaled-down session would become the starting point for the pianist's free improvisation career. His piano playing was still under a strong jazz influence and he had not started to use the instrument's bowels yet. Bassist Roy Babbington and vocalist Julie Tippetts accompany him almost throughout. Percussionists Frank Perry and Keith Bailey occasionally join in, providing mostly chimes and cymbals. The session, supervised by Robert Fripp, opens with "Song," a delicate jazzy number. With "Dance," things get more serious. Tippetts provides a steady rhythm guitar motif while everything around her breaks loose. Some numbers like "Glimpse" and "Woodcut" play more on silence than sound, exploring very quiet realms. At these points, the music is completely freed from any jazz references. Sound quality on the CD reissue is not fantastic (there is noticeable distortion in peaks), but the set remains engaging, even when one puts its historical significance aside. Oh, and by the way: those two "Blues," they aren't. ~ Franзois Couture, All Music Guide |

The seven selections (two added for the CD) give Coleman an opportunity to stretch out, and he really digs into such tunes as "They Say It's Wonderful," "Good Morning Heartache," and a 14-and-a-half-minute version of "Up Jumped Spring." 1979: Chet Baker Trio - Live In Montmartre Vol.3: Someday My Prince Will Come |
Cool, Baker Chet |

Artist: Chet Baker Album: Live In Montmartre Vol.3 - Someday My Prince Will Come Year: 1979 Label: Steeplechase Time: 54:32 Format: Live Quality: MP3 @320 kbps Size: 125 mb (RS.com) On October 4, 1979 Chet Baker played an excellent gig in Copenhagen. From that concert, Steeplechase issued these 3 CD's of over 2 1/2 hours of music. The tunes are somewhat livelier than The Touch of Your Lips recorded by the same group months earlier. Volume 1 opens with "For Minor's Only", and you know you in for a good show when Chet makes those first few notes that he so often cracked. There are a few moments where Chet seems to loose a little steam, and he has trouble hitting a few notes (a lot of notes on "You Can't Go Home Again"). However, overall, these recordings are some of Chet's finest work. Highlights include a cool, breezy "How Deep is the Ocean" and "House of Jade", a Wayne Shorter tune that Chet recorded only a few times. Volume 3 has an unusual piece called "Love Vibrations". Chet blows some rapid-fire solos on that one. The gig also includes the usual all-to-familiar tunes, "Love for Sale" and "This is Always". The latter is highlighted by Chet's sweet solo in the middle that sets it apart from his many other renditions of this song. - Chetbakertribute.com |
