AMG rаiting Tony Perkins - Tony Perkins

Tony Perkins will undoubtedly be best remembered for his considerable cinematic contributions rather than musical ones. However during the late '50s, Perkins demonstrated remarkable versatility as a sensitive vocalist on a series of pop recordings. By the time the entertainer issued this platter in 1957, he had already become an Academy Award nominee for his role in the Civil War era drama Friendly Persuasion (1956). Under the orchestration and scoring of arranger/conductor Marty Paich, Perkins reveals a real flair for the cool and easygoing approach of the West Coast post-bop jazz movement. In fact the song selection as well as darker vocal inflections recall a striking similarity to that of Chet Baker. Paich's contributions are tasteful and never overpower Perkins' warm and supple tones and are highlighted by an equally engaging choice of material. Among the more notable performances are "Just Friends," "This Time The Dream's On Me" and the hipster's lullaby "Hit The Road To Dreamland"." These sides, although his first to be released, were not Perkins' initial foray as a vocalist. At his suggestion, "A Little Love Can Go A Long, Long Way" was incorporated into the Goodyear Playhouse television adaptation of the screenplay Joey. The success and enthusiasm generated by the telecast led to an offer by Epic Records. Even before this album, Perkins had recorded half-a-dozen sides that eventually filled out the respective A and B sides of three 7" singles. Chief among these was his reading of the afore mentioned "A Little Love Can Go A Long, Long Way" as well as the title song from his concurrent motion picture Friendly Persuasion which was also known by its parenthetical title "Thee I Love." In 2003 Collectors' Choice Music issued Tony Perkins on CD and included not only these 45's, but also a previously unreleased reading of "If You Were The Only Girl" among the supplementary materials. Although Paich was not involved with the singles, Perkins' was in the respective company of Buddy Cole, jazz arranger Obie Masingill and Buddy Bergman. Jazz vocal enthusiasts might find themselves pleasantly surprised at the emotive range and style of Tony Perkins. Followers of the West Coast cool scene are highly encouraged to investigate this title as well. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide

Dexter Gordon - Master Takes - The Savoy Recordings
Artist: Dexter Gordon
Album:Master Takes - The Savoy Recordings
Label:Savoy
Years:1945-1947
Quality:MP3, 320 kb/s
Size:100 MB

This single album contains 15 of Dexter Gordon's significant Savoy sides from the prime years of the bop era. Gordon was (along with Wardell Gray and Teddy Edwards) the top young tenor of the period and his fame and influence would soon dwarf his two competitors. These quartet and quintet performances (featuring such top players as pianist Bud Powell, baritonist Leo Parker and trumpeter Fats Navarro) are concise, swinging and advanced for the time. This set is really more for general collectors since all of this music (plus the alternate takes, an additional session and one jam-session number) were included on the two-fer Long Tall Dexter. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Filmed in Japan in 1987, this tribute to the late jazz genius John Coltrane is outstanding. The musicians, sax players Wayne Shorter and Dave Liebman, pianist Richie Beirach, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Jack DeJohnette--all great in their own right--keep the eulogizing minimal and instead focus on interpreting a small handful of Coltrane's important works. Interpreting is key here, as the band often uses Coltrane's material as a jumping-off point before spiraling into inspired, freeform improvisation. Their best playing is showcased during two tunes of Coltrane's seminal album, Giant Steps: "Mr. PC" is upbeat, dizzying, and comes very close to rockin', while "Naima" (one of Coltrane's most lyrical, gorgeous pieces) is full of atmosphere and somber emotion. The band lets it all hang out (and nearly falls apart) during "Impressions," but somehow manages to stay balanced enough to pull it off. The sound is perfect here, and while the visuals don't offer much to look at, all you really need to do is listen. Coltrane would be pleased. ~ Dave McCoy , New York Times

Ben Webster & Gene Ammons - Tenor Giants (1995)
Artist: Ben Webster & Gene Ammons
Album: Tenor Giants
Label: Enja Horst Weber
Year: 1995 [Orig. Date-1957, Digital Remastered]
Genre: Jazz, Swing, Traditional Pop
Format, bitrate: ape/cue+art
Time: 73:26
Size: 100.4x3 + 79.6 Mb

Ремастерированный и выпущенный в 1995 году альбом сделан, как "Two LPs on One CDs" и включает в себя два альбома, выходивших на виниле.

This CD actually reissues two former live LPs, one featuring Ben Webster and the other a later session from Gene Ammons. Webster is heard at a Providence, RI, gig playing five standards and one original (his medium-tempo blues "Cookin' for T") less than a year before he moved permanently to Europe. Assisted by a top-notch rhythm section (pianist Junior Mance, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Mickey Roker), the great tenor is in fine form throughout the set so the familiar repertoire and merely adequate recording quality should not scare anyone away. Gene Ammons's performance with a trio headed by pianist Horace Parlan (and including bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Ed Jones) was performed in Sweden just 13 months before Jug's death but there is no obvious decline in his playing. Ammons (like Art Pepper) was a more intense and freer improviser after serving a long prison sentence than he had been earlier, while remaining quite recognizable. The music is purely straightahead, unlike some of Ammons's studio albums of the era, with three hard-swingers and a two-song ballad medley (Parlan is showcased on "Polka Dots and Moonbeams"). It is particularly nice to hear Gene Ammons verbally introducing the songs and his performance overall makes for a fine complement to the otherwise unrelated Webster date. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

M-Base. ~ jazz.ru

Mozdzer Danielsson Fresco - The Time (2005)

     Artists:Mozdzer Danielsson Fresco
     Album:The Time
     Label: Outside Music
     Year:2005
     Quality: mp3, 256 kb/s
     Size: 80mb

Starting with the CD, sound quality is excellent, and it sounds as if the audience spend most of their time in rapt silence, with applause and whoops only between numbers with the exception of the rousing Sartorello. Some, like The O and Abraham’s Bells run on into each other, making for extended concert movements like a classical concerto. Możdżer has a number of keyboard effects at his disposal, and the colours and variety in his playing is a central feature as ever. One sound appeals less than the others however, with what sounds like a highly amplified Stylophone in Ex Ego, which would be fine if the thing wasn’t so badly out of tune. For a few moments it gives the weird dual effect of sounding like an ethnic reed wind instrument of some kind, the Rolf Harris snake charmer, but it is clashes with the piano so badly and is so hard-edged in the balance that I for one was glad when it stopped. There are plenty of subtle atmospheric noises from both keyboard, and from Danielsson in Suffering, where the cello lays down an acoustic bed of sound for that gorgeous pizzicato solo. Eden is always a favourite, and sparkles and dances in this performance. Smells Like Teen Spirit, a highlight from ‘The Time’ is a well chosen conclusion, this time with a fine and wild piano improvisation from Możdżer breaking loose from the otherwise introverted arrangement, and allowing it to finish in solid rock’n roll style.

Jeff Healey's debut album See the Light may be similar to Stevie Ray Vaughan's high-octane blues-rock, but in blues and blues-rock, it's often the little things that count, such as guitar styles, and there's no denying that Healey has a distinctive style. Healey plays his Stratocaster flat on his lap, allowing him to perform unusual long stretches that give his otherwise fairly predictable music real heart and unpredictability. Throughout the album, his guitar work keeps things interesting, even on slow ballads like "Angel Eyes" (one of two John Hiatt songs, by the way, along with the ripping "Confidence Man"). That's what keeps See the Light interesting, and it's what makes it an intriguing, promising debut. Unfortunately, Healey has never quite fulfilled that promise, but it's still exciting to hear the first flowerings of his talent. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide

Much of his final decade was spent in Europe, often working with a trio completed by guitar and bass. Always in need of money to support his addictions, and still widely popular, Baker became one of the most voluminously documented jazz artists in history during the 1980s. This Is Always is yet another of the important Steeplechase-label recordings from Chet Baker's time on the Continent.

Since 1977, the Dirty Dozen has extended the New Orleans brass band tradition, adding a funk rhythm section and recording with alt-rockers from Elvis Costello to Modest Mouse. But the band has deep roots, and they've never been more apparent than on Funeral for a Friend, a performance that goes to the very core of jazz and New Orleans musical life. Dedicated to one of the band's founders, the late Anthony "Tuba Fats" Lacen, it's a jazz funeral with hymns played at stately dirge tempo en route to the cemetery, then pressed to festive up-tempo counterpoint on the return. The music here pulses with life--and with afterlife too--as the raw R&B force of tenor saxophonist Kevin Harris and baritone saxophonist Roger Lewis energizes traditional tunes like "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" and Blind Willie Johnson's "John the Revelator." On "I Shall Not Be Moved" and "Jesus on the Mainline," the band pushes outward to hypnotic, dense, incantatory jams. Funeral for a Friend is a summary of the Dirty Dozen's greatest strengths, a memorable CD filled with joy and sorrow and real emotional power. ~ Stuart Broomer

Enrico Pieranunzi has worked on an occasional basis with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron since the early 1980s. These 2004 sessions add trumpeter/flugelhornist Kenny Wheeler, a perfect choice for this tightly knit group. Pieranunzi has long been one of the top jazz pianists in Europe with a gift for lyricism, while Johnson and Baron have been a part of many important recordings as well as leading compelling CDs of their own. The primary focus is on the pianist's thoughtful originals. Several of the songs have a melancholy air, starting with the introspective opener, featuring Pieranunzi's Latin undercurrent with Wheeler's emotional open trumpet. "Song for Kenny," presumably dedicated to the trumpeter, is a midtempo bossa nova showcasing Wheeler on flugelhorn. Wheeler adds a mute for the haunting ballad "Improheart" (one of two works credited to the entire group), a powerful piece that conveys its mood without lyrics: "Impromind," the other group improvisation, is a bit more abstract yet very accessible. The trio always make beautiful music when they have a chance to work together, and the presence of Kenny Wheeler proves to be an inspired decision. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

The Andre Previn Trio (consisting of pianist Previn, bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Frank Capp) pays tribute to Fred Astaire by performing nine songs (plus Previn's original title song) that were performed by Astaire in movies. Since the famous dancer/singer always had superior material to work with, Previn had a lot to choose from. Highlights include "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "A Foggy Day," "A Fine Romance" and "Fascinatin' Rhythm." This LP is worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

The genius of Spike Jones--as a songwriter, bandleader, and musician--is often overshadowed by his comedic schtick. But make no mistake, Jones was a musician and a damn fine one at that; on a set of drums, singing into a microphone or with a car horn. This bargain-priced, four-CD set goes a long way towards setting Jones' record straight. In the 1930s and 1940s, while American dance and jazz orchestras were just finding their mature footing and popularity, Jones was there to sabotage their efforts with great playing, parody tunes ("I Dream of Brownie With the Light Blue Jeans", "I'm Forever Blowing Bubble Gum"), and, oh yes, gunfire. As novelty artists go, Jones was one of the best. He hired great musicians for his Cityslickers, he wrote memorable songs, and he was a snappy dresser, too. This set features more of the musician than you'll ever need, but its super-cheap price, nice liner notes, and great music (that still sounds hilarious after all these years) make it a steal. ~ Jason Verlinde, Amazon.co.uk

Known for his work as the leader of the Claudia Quintet and his contributions to veteran trombonist Bob Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra, John Hollenbeck has shown himself to a very intuitive and far-reaching drummer, percussionist and composer who can handle a variety of jazz situations — some of them avant-garde and left-of-center, some of them more mainstream (by jazz standards). Hollenbeck, who is a native and resident of New York City and is associated with the experimental Downtown Manhattan music scene, brings an inside/outside perspective to the table. Hollenbeck is comfortable with outside expression and has been influenced by free jazz, but he has also been affected by ECM Records' catalog and is equally comfortable playing more accessible post-bop. The long list of people Hollenbeck has played with in the '90s or 2000s underscores his versatility and broad-mindedness; that list ranges from pianist Fred Hersch (who has a strong Bill Evans influence) to Vietnamese trumpeter Cuong Vu and singer/pianist Theo Bleckmann.

Little-known Malle's film is accompanied by marvelous Stephane Grappelli's music. The soundtrack is likely more significant then the film itself. And as it always is, timeless Grappelli's music never dissapoints a listener, whichever captious he/she is...

An obscure soundtrack from a little-known film by Louis Malle, Stephane Grappelli nevertheless rewards the listener with a strong cast and a number of original compositions on this CD. Guitarists Marc Fossett and Martin Taylor, bassist Jack Sewing, pianist Maurice Vander, clarinetist/soprano saxophonist Pierre Gossez and accordion player Marcel Azzola join him. The version of "Tiger Rag" is more like traditional Dixieland than Grappelli has typically approached the piece, though it swings marvelously. Of the originals, Grappelli's swinging opener "Milou" and Fosset's lively "Pic-nic" particularly stand out. Not a necessity, but this release will reward Grappelli fans.
