Martin Taylor-Double Standards
Artist: Martin Taylor
Album: Double Standards
Label: P3
Release Date: Sep 9, 2008
Genre: Jazz
Format: mp3 320 Kbps
Size: 78728 KB

British jazz guitarist Taylor grew up listing to legends like Django Reinhardt, and eventually went on to perform with the legend's former partner, violinist Stephane Grapelli, before moving on to a successful solo career. This is a pleasant and enjoyable album of standards and familiar songs arranged for solo guitar. Taylor has impeccable technique, but he never uses it in a showy or boastful manner, but rather much of the album is quite restrained and his energy is focused on interpreting the song and it's melody. Particularly enjoyable are the Toot's Thielemans classic "Blusette" and a nimble and impressive "Drop Me Off In Harlem." Taylor has a patient and thoughtful way of playing ballads and the beautiful melodies of "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "I Fall In Love Too Easily" suit him well. This is a good album for reading and relaxing, it is thoughtful and well designed, and will no doubt be appreciated by acoustic guitar partisans.

Artist: Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen
Album: Jaywalkin'
Release Date:1975
Label:SteepleChase

Size:190+93,9Mb

A virtuoso bassist who graced hundreds of recordings during his career (which began in his teens), Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen's debut as a leader is a bit of a mixed bag. His band includes guitarist Philip Catherine (who alternates between electric and acoustic instruments), drummer Billy Higgins, and pianist Ole Kock Hansen, the latter unfortunately playing an electric keyboard, which causes many of the songs in which he takes part to sound dated. Playing in settings ranging from solo to quartet and including six originals, the best tracks are the acoustic arrangements. Pedersen's unaccompanied solo interpretation of the standard "That's All" is majestic, while a trio settings of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "A Felicidade" and a breezy original bossa nova ("My Little Anna") with the full band are also enjoyable. But the electric piano sucks the life out of an otherwise excellent take of Charlie Parker's "Cheryl" (which Catherine sits out), while the funky originals "Jaywalkin'" and "Interlude" also don't make much of an impression. Fortunately, Pedersen rarely utilized electric piano on future sessions as a leader. Review by Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Happy Birthday Don Byas!

REPOST

Ben Webster, Don Byas.

This early-'70s meeting between two giants of the tenor sax (both of whom by this time were living in Europe on a permanent basis) is full of memorable moments. The styles of Ben Webster and Don Byas provide a distinct contrast (though Byas was also a swing-influenced saxophonist, he was heavily into bop as well), yet they mesh very well together. On their opening improvised "Blues for Dottie Mae," Webster's big-toned swing tends to dominate, though Byas ' boppish lines dart around at lightning speeds; Tete Montoliu 's bluesy piano provides the perfect support. The roles are evened out a bit more on a swinging take of "Sunday." The evenly matched tenor battle continues with a rousing "Perdido" and very swinging "Caravan." Bassist Peter Trunk introduces Byas ' "Lullaby to Dottie Mae," an easygoing reworking of the timeless ballad "Body and Soul," which features a rapid-fire solo by Byas . Webster's turn in the solo spotlight is his own ballad "When Ash Meets Henry," in which he is accompanied only by Trunk 's well-chosen basslines. Also present on the date is drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath . Sadly, this LP was a bit of a swan song for both tenor saxophonists; Byas died in the year prior to its 1973 release, while Webster died the following year, though he taped at least one more album following this one. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Dizzy Gillespie - The Cool World (1964)
Artist: Dizzy Gillespie
Album: The Cool World
Genre: Soundtrack
Label: Verve/Philips
Year: 1964
Size: 90 mb
Quality: mp3, 320 kb/s

Саундтрек к фильму "Cool World".

The music from "the cool world" was entirely written by Mal Waldron. It includes a lot of haunting minor keyed tunes,in which Mal excells. Dizzy's playing is at his peak, and there is great swing coming from the band. Dizzy recorded a great number of albums during his long career,so it isn't always easy to choose some in his discography, but this is a great one, exploring songs that Dizzy will never record again.

Tito Puente - Night Beat
     Artist: Tito Puente
     Album: Night Beat
     Label: Koch Records
     Year: 1957
     Quality: FLAC
     Size: 271 MB
     Time: 37:09

Although Latin percussionists (including Mongo Santamaria) are utilized on this set (a RCA album reissued in 1998 as a Koch CD), most of the selections certainly do not sound like they came from a Tito Puente record. For a change of pace, Puente is heard leading a fairly straight-ahead big band which includes among its main soloists trumpeter Doc Severinen (heard throughout in excellent form) and tenor saxophonist Marty Holmes, who often recalls Paul Quinichette. From the opening stripper-style blues of "Night Beat," through a variety of group originals and an uptempo "Carioca," the music swings and generally avoids most of the expected Latin influences. A very interesting (and musically rewarding) departure for Puente. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Pat Metheny - Tokyo Day Trip: Live EP (2008)
     Artist: Pat Metheny
Album: Tokyo Day Trip: Live EP
     Label: Nonesuch
     Release Date: May 13, 2008
     Genre: Jazz
     Format: mp3 320 Kbps
     Size: 94,9MB

The Pat Metheny Trio’s Tokyo Day Trip EP collects five tracks that were originally issued as bonus tracks on different projects—in Japan and by Nonesuch—and offers them to fans for a bargain price tag. This is no mere marketing gag. For a long time now, fans have been requesting these cuts, all of which were recorded before the trio went in to record the phenomenal Day Trip album that was released in January of 2008. Metheny, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Antonio Sanchйz offer a solid and wildly diverse 40-minute set of music. The disc opens with the lengthy introspective and wonderfully atmospheric electric ballad ”Tromsш.” It’s followed by the guitarist’s trademark euphoric and sophisticated post-bop jazz ”Traveling Fast” and the acoustic pastoral piece ”Inori.” ”The Night Becomes You,” which closes the set, is a gorgeous impressionistic jazz ballad that marries Metheny’s harmonic palette with Bill Evans’ lyric sensibility and sense of sparseness. These four cuts are all worthy additions to Metheny’s catalog and make for a compelling listen. All of this said, the real icing on the cake for many will be the kinetic, knotty, and overdriven ”Back Arm & Blackcharge,” which places the trio firmly in the category of electric jazz-rock—all the more impressive given the fact that McBride plays an acoustic bass on it. Long, loud, labyrinthine lines flow from Metheny’s guitar, wedding bebop, funk, controlled feedback, choppy Hendrixian chord voicings, and a pure rockist’s sense of attack to a rhythm section set on stun. Sanchйz’s breakbeats and triple-time polyrhythmic inversions take in jazz history from Gene Krupa and Max Roach to Elvin Jones and postmodern Afro-Cuban clave extrapolations. McBride’s force and brutally quick changes between single line and chords act as a bridge between Metheny and Sanchйz—but all the while it’s his game, given the way rhythms shift and interlock and create new pulses. This track alone is worth the price of admission, and makes the EP essential. Metheny, who understands his fan base better than just about any other jazz artist out there, knows that some fans already have some of these cuts, and has made the individual selections available as digital downloads as well.      Of significant interest to jazz fans are sound recordings from special collections and archives of big band memorabilia in various institutions across the USA. Based on an arduous search for holdings and then consultation with the professionals in charge, an exclusive compilation of those riches has been prepared. Among the bandleaders represented are Kay Kyser, Count Basie, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Duke Ellington, Les Brown, Woody Herman, Jimmy Dorsey, Lionel Hampton, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw… Despite the importance of these primary source materials to music scholars and other historians (not to mention tomorrow's musicians), the majority have thus far been given little attention. Since the big band sound was first and foremost an American phenomenon.

Dave Brubeck is still going strong at the age of 83 during this 2004 concert in Baden-Baden at the Festspielhaus, well accompanied by alto saxophonist Bobby Militello, bassist Michael Moore, and his longtime drummer Randy Jones. At a point where many jazz musicians rest on their laurels, revisiting past hits exclusively, the pianist mixes in several recent songs. His quartet easily negotiates the demands of his tricky "London Flat, London Sharp" while Brubeck's haunting "Elegy" showcases Militello on flute and Moore's matchless arco bass. Jones is featured extensively in "Out of the Way of the People" and the inevitable "Take Five." Although Brubeck seems reserved during several of the performances, his lyrical touch is evident throughout much of the concert, which is capped by an encore consisting of a single chorus of "Brahms' Lullaby" at the piano. The audio, video, and editing of this concert is flawless, though Manfred Frei's interview of Brubeck on the empty stage rambles on far too much, as Frei seems unprepared and unable to stay on track with his subject. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Covering an important six-year period in Ella Fitzgerald's career, this two-CD set contains some of the highlights of the period as she develops from a top big-band singer into a masterful jazz improviser. Although one wishes that this survey were "complete," the 43 selections do feature Fitzgerald in a wide variety of settings, including with small groups, collaborating with The Ink Spots, the Delta Rhythm Boys Louis Jordan, Louis Armstrong and fronting various studio groups. Most of her hits from the period are here along with previously unissued alternate takes of "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Flying Home" and two of "How High the Moon," making this a strong introduction to her early years. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

One word should suffice to encourage you to buy this: Hipnosis.
It's one of the most amazing performances by any group of jazz musicians, incredibly tight yet expressive. Dave Burrell is on fire. Shepp navigates a familiar theme by dancing across the landscape with a unique blend of ferocity and tenderness. You don't need to think about the rest of the album--Hipnosis is why you should get it. -- by Robert E. Lloyd (amazon.com)
