The Joshua Redman Quartet - Blues for Pat (1994)
Artist: The Joshua Redman Quartet
Album: Blues for Pat (Live in San Francisco)
Format: APE & MP3 (320k/s)
Size: 465 & 167 MB (scans)
Label: Jazz Door (1995)
Total playing: 75:44

After recording Wish for Warner Bros. in a quartet with guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Billy Higgins, young tenorman Joshua Redman hit the road with the same group (except with Christian McBride in Haden's place). This European CD, probably a bootleg, shows just how exciting the band was live. On 70 minutes of music recorded in a San Francisco club, Redman often indulges in close interplay and exciting tradeoffs with Metheny; the two clearly inspired each other. The recording quality is decent, and the performances overall actually exceed Wish in passion and creativity. Highlights include "Blues for Pat," an 181/2-minute version of "St. Thomas" and "Carla's Groove." All Joshua Redman and Pat Metheny fans will want this one. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

The album comes in three parts, 'Essential Tech Dance', 'Trance Selection' and 'Classic Selection' and features tough nuts from the likes of Vandall, Judge Jules, Si Begg, Darude and of course Yoji himself. Recorded at the time Armstrong was in the film New Orleans, broke up his orchestra, and formed his very popular "All-Stars," these 20 tracks feature Satch in prime form whether playing relaxed standards, New Orleans gems, or duetting with trombonist/vocalist Jack Teagarden. Highpoints include a reunion with his old boss trombonist Kid Ory, five selections from his classic 1947 Town Hall concert (including definitive versions of "Ain't Misbehavin'", "Rockin' Chair," and "Back O'Town Blues"), sharing the spotlight with Jack T. on "A Song Was Born" and "Please Stop Playing Those Blues, Boy," and taking one of his greatest ever solos on "Jack-Armstrong Blues." An outstanding set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Jef Gilson Et Malagasy - Zao (2004)
Artist: Jef Gilson Et Malagasy
Album: Zao /import/
Label: Pony Canyon
Year: 2004
Genre: Jazz
Format, bitrate: MP3@192 kbps
Time: 61:06
Size: 85.3 Mb

Recorded in Madagascar and Paris at the turn of the 60-70s, the music of the young Malagasy players and their mentor Jef Gilson evokes Dorothy Ashby, Coltrane and the best Chicago honkers. Their version of 'The Creator has a masterplan'competes with the original (some of us even think it is better), the drive of the malagasy percussions and the haunting sound of the valiha (traditionnal harp) will put you in an enlighting trance.

...the ageless Grappelli playing the ageless Kern melodies... The most famous and outstanding ones.
Grappelli Kern-a... .

This CD is much more unusual for the GRP label than it is for violinist Stephane Grappelli. Joined by two guitars (Marc Fossett and Martin Taylor), bass, drums and a subtle string orchestra, Grappelli comes up with fresh statements on 11 Jerome Kern songs including such classics as "The Way You Loook Tonight," "All the Things You Are," "Pick Yourself Up" and "I Won't Dance."
