     Titi Robin may be a bit of a flake (he once recorded an album of music improvised while gazing upon a nude model), but he is an amazing guitar and oud player, and on a good day he can originate a brilliant concept. Case in point: on Gitans, which means "Gypsies," Robin brings together the many varieties of Gypsy music from India to Spain, but keeps them anchored in flamenco, taking advantage of its strong Arabic dimension. So we have guitar and oud, Spanish and Rajasthani voices, palmas and tablas. Robin is not striving for some sort of ecumenical "flamenco nuevo" on this album. This is soul-searing stuff. "Martinetes y Debla" tells the story of an encounter between Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the unnamed mother of Judas after their sons' deaths. The piece offers no percussion or rhythm instruments, just Paco El lobo's raw flamenco singing and Robin's oud. This is not to say that listening to the album is an ascetic experience; the rumba-flamenco song "La Petite Mer" is percussive on both the palmas and the guitar, and it's infectiously danceable. Then there's a track like "Mehdi" which starts out vaguely Middle Eastern and slyly changes into Klezmer music! The whole album is an embarrassment of riches on this order. If you're interested in real flamenco, the music of the Gypsies, or any of their many homelands, this album is available to nourish your soul. ~ Kurt Keefner, All Music Guide

     Maybe it's just Archie Shepp's preeminence over musicians who came in his wake or maybe it's his mahogany tone, big and thick. Then again, maybe it's Kahil El'Zabar's love of polyrhythms. But this marriage of Chicago's Ritual Trio and jazz veteran Shepp is an utterly compelling one. The whole CD bounces in broad jumps, taken at a midtempo pace with an ecumenical command of every post-bebop, acoustic-jazz style.

     The tunes for the date are simple, yet effective vehicles for the superb blowing herein. The opener, "Wells", is a loping blues-y track. "West" in medium up with everybody relaxing in 4-to-the-bar. "EFFPH" is a Latinish bit centering around 8 measure chordal pattern that repeats itself in almost a "montuno" style for the soloists. Side B's "Snuffy" is medium up again with extended Blues choruses, and the closer follows a similar pattern. -- by H. Alan Stein (from original lines notes)

     Usually recordings by college stage bands are to be avoided by all but close relatives since the illusion of professionalism heard in the well-rehearsed ensembles is constantly punctured by amateurish solos. However this CD features flugelhornist Clark Terry and Frank Wess (doubling on flute and tenor) on half of the sel«e»ctions and the orchestra (under the direction of Bob Lark) is fairly strong. The big band interprets a dozen songs from the Count Basie repertoire (plus "Winter Wonderland") with solid swing and good musicianship. Still, it is the numbers with Terry and Wess that are of greatest interest and the real reason to acquire this set. -- Review by Scott Yanow

     When listening to the many albums of John Coltrane it is easy to be unimpressed by his earlier works or else to find his later works too avant-garde and difficult to listen to. "Tanganyika Strut" is neither of these. This album seems to have captured him in his transitional phase (1958-1959) where he expresses a great amount of feel in his playing mixed with impressively fast and complicated solos which make his music easier to listen to. This is particularly true with the first two tracks on the album. To those who really get deep into their music you will find yourselves playing this album over and over again admiring the feel and technique than Coltrane possessed. For me, "Tanganyika Strut" along with "A Kind of Blue" (Coltrane and Miles Davis) and "My Favourite Things" represent the best of Coltrane. Remember that Coltrane's music is extremely deep and often difficult to get into. -- from Amazon.com
