This CD includes many of Tommy Dorsey's very best recordings from 1939-1942 along with four selections dating from 1944-1945. During this period the sound of his orchestra had changed from the earlier days, thanks in large part to Sy Oliver's arrangements and the hard-driving drums of Buddy Rich. With such soloists as trumpeter Ziggy Elman, tenor-saxophonist Don Lodice, and clarinetist Johnny Mince (in addition to Dorsey's trombone), this orchestra could play jazz with the best of their contemporaries, although many of their other recordings (not included here) actually showcased vocals and dance music. An excellent cool-toned tenor saxophonist proud of the influence of Lester Young, Brew Moore only recorded on an infrequent basis during his career. He did make two albums for Fantasy that were reissued in the Original Jazz Classics series. The three dates included on this set were all cut in San Francisco with local (and now obscure) musicians: trumpeter Dick Mills, pianist John Marabuto, bassist Max Hartstein, drummer Gus Gustofson and an unidentified guitarist. Marabuto contributed three originals; Mills wrote "Rotation," and the other four songs are familiar standards. Moore plays well (despite a hectic lifestyle, he was pretty consistent on records) and the music is relaxed and swinging. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

A extremely rare album that Eric Dolphy recorded with the Latin Jazz Quintet -- a rare Latin-based side of Dolphy's career, and a set that's a bit different than the Prestige album by the same pairing! This set features a slightly different lineup of the LJQ -- one that includes Louie Ramirez on timbales, Felipe Diaz on vibes, and Art Jenkins on piano -- all grooving very hard, and very tight next to Dolphy's work on alto, flute, and bass clarinet! Dutch guitarplayer Aron Raams was born in 1979 in Oosterhout. At the age of 6 years he learned the first tricks of the Blues and Rock & Roll from his father. In the beginning he listened to Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, but later on he got influenced by Robben Ford.
At the age of 18 he decides to become a professional musician, and he starts to study at the conservatory of Brabant. It's here where he discovers jazz, and he gets his lessons from Jan Akkerman, Jesse van Ruller, Lee Konitz and David Murray. He graduates in 2003.
From this period, he plays in different projects and bands. He finds his inspiration in musicians like Charley Parker, Miles Davis, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Scott Henderson, Mike Stern, Jesse van Ruller, Brad Mehldau, Seamus Blake, Charlie Haden and many others..
He worked on a regular base with Candy Dulfer, Hans Dulfer, Benjamin Herman, Jeroen van Vliet, Julian Sas a.o.

Though purists will find John McLaughlin's This Is Jazz, Vol. 17 frustratingly incomplete, it isn't designed for them. The entire This Is Jazz series is targeted at casual fans and neophytes who only want a sampling of a famous jazz artist. In that sense, this disc does its job quite well, featuring cuts by the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Shakti and One Truth, as well as collaborations with Carlos Santana, Tony Williams and Katia Labeque. Of course, this only is the tip of the iceberg as far as McLaughlin's work goes — after all, it only features his music for Columbia — but it's enough to spark the interest of anyone wanting to explore his vast catalog. ~ Thom Owens, AMG

Billie Holiday is heard at her absolute best on this attractive CD . During her period on Decca, Lady Day was accompanied by strings (for the first time), large studio orchestras, and even background vocalists, so jazz solos from her sidemen are few. But her voice was at its strongest during the 1940s (even with her personal problems) and to hear all 50 of her Decca performances (including alternate takes and even some studio chatter) is a real joy.

In Correspondances, the French gypsy group Bratsch offers their own songs, along with arrangements of a traditional song, a song from Django Reinhardt, and others. The title of the CD is a play with words in order to invite listeners to participate in their musical trip: "correspondences" is an invitation to travel, "Corps," "respond," and "dance" can also mean either "to produce with the heart" or "the body responds by dancing," specially when everything goes awry. This trip is what they share with listeners: a life as travelers with no real home and no borders, at home nowhere and everywhere at the same time. This musicical trip is produced with heart as only gypsies know how to do.
