   On this excellent CD, one of Ranee Lee's earliest recordings, the singer pays tribute to Billie Holiday with renditions of a dozen songs associated with Lady Day. The Canadian release features Lee joined by pianist Oliver Jones, guitarist Richard Ring, Richard Beaudet on reeds, veteran bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Archie Alleyne; the title cut also includes a string section. Lee manages to recapture Holiday's spirit without resorting to mimicry. This tasteful effort has among its highlights "When a Woman Loves a Man," "Crazy He Calls Me," "Easy Living" and "Them There Eyes." Recommended.

The 1958-59 Gerry Mulligan Quartet included the baritonist/leader, trumpeter Art Farmer, bassist Bill Crow and drummer Dave Bailey; this aggregate only recorded one studio album, What Is There to Say? Fortunately, they were captured on various live records during a European tour, including two albums recorded the same night in Rome (and not available until this 1990 release). The set from the Fini Jazz label is well recorded and finds the group in top form. Mulligan switches to piano for "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," while "I Can't Get Started" sounds fine but fades out prematurely. However, it is the other three numbers (the older Mulligan tune "Walkin' Shoes" and two numbers that had been recorded on their studio album: "As Catch Can" and "Just In Time") that are the highlights. As usual, the counterpoint between the two horns, the lightly swinging rhythm section, and the constant sly wit and good feelings make this a very appealing group. The second volume is happily the equal of the first.

This album has a tremendous line-up! Overall, this recording is not unlike its second track - "Nice and Easy."
Having some of the world's best musicians on hand doesn't hurt at all. Helping Ranee to achieve her musical goals are Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen, Both of these guys have some wonderful moments ' here, keeping everything in place for some outstanding flugelhorn solos by the always exciting Guido Basso, whose interplay with saxophonist Pat LaBarbera (who plays the way a tenor should sound) is a marvel. At times these two sound more like five or six!
I do believe Canadian pianist Tilden Webb comes into his own on this recording, and he displays an unusual maturity for such a young player. Guitarist Richard Ring is someone I've always admired, and he is one of the most complete musicians I've had the pleasure of knowing. He shines throughout, at turns tender and sensitive or swinging hard, depending on what's called for.

     After recording many albums for Concord (including the majority of the label's first releases), Herb Ellis did not lead any sessions for seven years until this duet date with bassist Red Mitchell. Other than three originals (including Mitchell's "Big 'N' and the Bear" which features the bassist's vocal), the repertoire is taken from the swing era. The interplay by the two greats on tunes such as "Sweethearts on Parade," a medium-tempo "Over the Rainbow," "Lady Be Good" and Mitchell's "Life's a Take" plus the classic cover drawing by cartoonist Gary Larson (depicting a jazz club run by and for dogs called "The Stuffed Cat") are good reasons to acquire this high-quality straightahead session.    Ranee Lee has always been a dramatic jazz singer and on this CD she has the opportunity to sing both jazz and Broadway show tunes. The repertoire alternates between vintage songs and more recent Broadway tunes. Most jazz-oriented are "I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues," a high point that features Lee backed by just pianist Red Mitchell, and a duet with guitarist Richard Ring on "In a Sentimental Mood." Some of the other songs are not destined for long life such as "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" although it is nice to hear "I'm Flying" (from Peter Pan) being revived. Lee gives every tune her all and the musicians are excellent although the material does vary. Not essential, this set nevertheless displays Lee's warm voice and versatility.

Примерно десять лет назад или около того, быть может, чуть больше, среди любителей музыки, следивших за современными джазовыми тенденциями, в собственно джазе или «околоджазе», было дурным тоном не знать имя Jazzanova и название фирмы Compost Records. Сам Jazzanova и тогдашние резиденты Compost-a, прославились собственно тем, что придумали некое «фирменное», «компостовское» звучание, во многом черпавшее вдохновение в европейском эстрадном джазе шестидесятых-семидесятых годов, и которое, звучание, безошибочно угадывалось в каждом релизе фирмы. Потом, со временем, впрочем, довольно быстро, все конечно от этого устали. Все было довольно предсказуемо и больше походило на бег на месте, чем на движение вперед. Но все музыканты все-таки отметились, кто большим, кто меньшим, но некоторым количеством нетленных творений, которые слушаются, и по сей день с удовольствием. Самих резидентов с Compost-a, я не встречал пока у нас в клубе. По правде сказать, они действительно, не совсем форматные для здешнего слушателя. Нашел лишь блунотовский сборник, составителем которого выступил тот самый Jazzanova. Но не о нем сейчас речь. Представляемый сборник польского джаза, был подобран и издан теми же люди, о которых я тут так много распространялся. Новоиспеченные звезды современного клубного джаза, без всякого стеснения, а скорее с огромным пиететом, переиздавали музыку, которая их самих и вдохновляла.

Чери очень люблю. Какой-то он вдумчиво-легкий, при всей его тяге нет-нет, да записать что-нибудь авангардистское. Даже его упорное стремление играть на «карманной трубе», которой он время от времени все же изменяет, но это случается не очень часто, так вот даже в этой его верности этому инструменту, уже просматривается некий вызов традиционализму. Мое появление в клубе, тоже было связано с этим музыкантом. Но то был чистой воды этно-экспиремент. Здесь же куда все более «земное», «традиционное», «читабельное», в ЕСМ-овском смысле этих терминов и применительно к самому музыканту. Осенняя музыка. На любой вкус. Работа достаточно разнообразная по звучанию, но все-таки с нешуточным креном в сторону эксперимента.
