Ana Caram - Maracana |
Music » Jazz » Latin » Bossa Nova |
 |
 |
Artist: Ana CaramAlbum: MaracanaLabel: Chesky records Quality; mp3 @320 Size: 114 mb = all covers Year: 1993 While holding on tight to her bossa nova base, Caram ranges further afield in this Chesky outing to other strains of Brazilian music, even somewhat outside the country. Caram expands her palette to include a three-piece horn section — Steve Sacks, Al Hunt (reeds), David Sacks (trombone) — from whose versatile hands emerge a pocket-sized big band, a soulful flute choir, and other novel combinations. An occasional cello adds a brooding lyrical element, while an Argentine bandoneon sounds a bit cheesy and sentimental, and Caram herself plays an "electric" guitar with nylon strings which sounds only slightly more gleaming than an acoustic model. The album's clever title is the name of the title track, Brazil's biggest soccer stadium and an anagram of the singer's own name, though exactly why it reflects Caram's "two sides" as suggested in the packaging remains unclear from the album's contents. While it is a worthwhile experiment, this CD isn't as focused and as attractive as Caram's U.S. debut, Rio After Dark. |

Ana Caram - Amazonia |

Artist: Ana Caram Album: Amazonia Released: 1992 Size: 130 mb + all covers Label: Chesky records A charming young Brazilian singer/acoustic guitarist with a light, melodic Rio de Janeiro-ish approach, Ana Caram showed much promise on her debut American release, Amazonia. The clean-sounding collection of pop and pop-jazz, which draws on such influences as Astrud Gilberto and Gal Costa, may not be innovative, but it's definitely personal and heartfelt. In addition to contributing her own songs, Caram interprets the music of Brazilian artists ranging from Ivan Lins ("Illuminado") to Djavan ("Cigano" and "Aviao") to the revered Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Solitao," a fine song that isn't one of hismore… better-known compositions). Most of the CD finds Caram singing in her native language of Portuguese, but on the poetic "Antonio's Song" (one of the best songs jazz-pop vocalist Michael Franks has ever written), she switches to English with equally inviting results. |

He moved to the U.S. in 1975, where he worked with Gil Evans, Jackie McLean, Dave Liebman, and Elvin Jones. Hino spent more of his time in Japan after the early '80s, and recorded in several different styles ranging from straight-ahead to fusion. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: James CarterAlbum: J.C. on the SetLabel: Sony Year:1993 , release 1994 Genre: Jazz, post-bop Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kbps Time: 1h, 4 min 31 sec. Size: 155 mb. Twenty-five at the time of this CD, James Carter had already absorbed much of the tradition. His debut as a leader includes compositions by the classic tenors Don Byas and John Hardee, Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady" and even a Sun Ra ballad. He also shows that he has the courage to play completely outside whenever it seems logical to him; in fact on the title cut Carter moves from Gene Ammons and Illinois Jacquet to outbursts a la David Murray in the stratosphere. But most importantly, at this early stage James Carter already had his own sound. He switches between the tenor (his main ax) to alto and baritone, shows self-restraint on the ballads and fills his improvisations with continual surprises. Joined by the supportive pianist Craig Taborn, bassist Jaribu Shahid and drummer Tani Tabbal, James Carter puts on quite a tour-de-force throughout this very impressive set. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Jimmy McPartland - That Happy Dixieland Jazz (1959) |

Artist: Jimmy McPartland and His DixielandersAlbum: That Happy Dixieland JazzFormat: Ape & mp3@320Kbps Size: 240 & 79 MB (scans) Label: RCA (Living Stereo) Total playing: 35:09 Jimmy McPartland and several old friends are clearly having the time of their lives during this pair of 1959 studio sessions made for RCA. Dick Cary's swinging arrangements are imaginative yet leave room for plenty of spirited solos by everyone. "High Society" features not one but two clarinets, played by Bob Wilber and Ernie Caceres (the former doubles on tenor sax, the latter on baritone sax). McPartland plays hot cornet throughout the disc, complemented by trumpeter Charlie Shavers; both men share the vocals during the inevitable rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In." The band also includes Cary (on piano, alto horn, and trumpet), trombonist Cutty Cutshall, guitarist George Barnes, tuba player Harvey Phillips, and bassist Joe Burriesce. This very well-recorded date still sounds great decades later, and will satisfy anyone who enjoys the Chicago style of Dixieland jazz. ~ Ken Dryden, AMG |

Jack Costanzo & His Orchestra - Versatile Mr. Bongo Plays Jazz, Afro and Latin |

Artist: Jack Costanzo & His Orchestra Album: Versatile Mr. Bongo Plays Jazz, Afro and Latin Label: Fresh Sounds Recording Date: Dec 1954 - Jul 3, 1956 Release Date: Apr 26, 2005 Genre: Jazz; Styles: Latin Jazz Format: MP3 320 kbps Size: 120 MB All Music Rating: Jack Costanzo was a true pioneer in playing jazz on Latin instruments. In his long career he was always best known for his bongo playing, although he also performed on conga frequently. He gained fame for his work in the late '40s with Stan Kenton's orchestra and as a member of the Nat King Cole Trio (which became a quartet) during 1949-1951. Since then, Costanzo has been heard in a wide variety of settings. This Fresh Sound release reissues two of Costanzo's first sessions as a leader. Most jazz-oriented are five of the first six selections, which feature Costanzo in a pair of overlapping septets with such players as Rolf Ericson or John Anderson on trumpet, altoist Herbie Steward, Bill Holman or Tom Brown on tenor, and pianist Gerry Wiggins in 1954. That project also resulted in "Mambo Costanzo," which showcases Costanzo unaccompanied. The bulk of the CD has Costanzo with a brass section (either six or eight pieces), pianist Eddie Cano, a bassist, and either three or four percussionists/drummers in 1956. The performances are jazzy rather than straightforward jazz, with the orchestra emphasizing ensembles and being propelled by the percussionists. A couple of the tunes are tongue-in-cheek (including "Diga Diga Doo") or lightweight ("Row Row Row"), and John Anderson's arrangements hint at both movie music and Stan Kenton. But there are many moments of interest. In summary, this CD brings back a couple of Jack Costanzo's most important early projects as a leader, showing why he was known as "Mr. Bongo." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Cachao - Master Sessions, Vol. 1 |
Music » Jazz » Latin |
 |
 |
Artist: Cachao Lopez Album: Master Sessions, Vol. 1 Release: 23 Dec 1999 Label: Sonybmg Format: mp3 320 kbps Size: 180 MB In 1939 in Havana, 21-year-old Israel Lopez, better known as Cachao, and his brother Orestes wrote "Mambo," a song based on the spirited syncopation which often climaxed the danzon, a European rondo popular in Cuba at the time. By heightening those infectious rhythms, the Lopez brothers revolutionized Cuban music and launched the "mambo craze," which soon swept the world. Few musicians have had such an international impact, but Cachao was largely forgotten until Cuban-American actor Andy Garcia decided to pay tribute to his father's favorite musician: Cachao, El Maestro. Garcia helped organize a 1992 concert tribute to Cachao in Miami and produced a 1993 recording session with Cachao in Los Angeles, Master Sessions, Volume 1. Compared to the super-heated beats of contemporary salsa and sones from the Caribbean, Cachao's mambos, danzons, and rumbas have a more patient, more sensual approach to rhythm. Within that sashaying, midtempo pulse, however, are pushing, pulling sub-rhythms which give the music its vitality. The tunes are decorated with vocal chants and guitar and horn solos, but the syncopation is the heart of the music. Cachao launched a second musical revolution in 1957, when he organized legendary jam sessions called descargas which combined Cuban rhythms with American jazz improvisation. Master Sessions includes new versions of Cachao's two groundbreaking compositions, "Mambo" and "Descarga Cachao." --Geoffrey Himes |

Artist: Tito Rodriguez Album: Live at Birdland Label: Bomba Orig Year: 1963 Release Date: Sep 25, 2006 Format: mp3 320 kbps Size: 100 MB Tito Rodriguez vocalist, percussionist, composer, bandleader (1923 -1973) in the 1950’s through ‘60’s was a smooth voiced Latin nightclub crooner, who reigned over the radio and record charts geared toward the Puerto Rican community both in New York and on the island, where his music is still very popular. His popularity then grew broader and reached into all of Latin America. His distinct, resonant voice floated crystal-clear above the dense sound of his large orchestra, which was the best in its day. He is still revered as an uptempo sonero and a romantic singer who influenced the wave of salsa singers that followed. In 1963 he issued the Latin jazz “Live At Birdland,” which featured the jazz musicians Zoot Sims, Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer Tito Rodriguez’s last appearance was with Machito and his band at Madison Square Garden on 2 February 1973. He finally lost the battle with leukemia and 26 days later, on 28 February 1973, Rodriguez died in his wife’s arms. |
