Bratsch - From Heart Of Europe Music » Country & Folk
Bratsch - From Heart Of Europe
     Artists - Bratsch
Album - From Heart Of Europe
     Label - World Network
     Year - 1993, release -19951995-11-21
Genre musical : Musiques du monde Jazz Tzigane
     Format : MP3 320kbps / Flac
     Size : 37087 KB ~ 100431 KB

The group, whose name is borrowed from Bratsch (viola), the rhythmic instrument orchestras Gypsy, was born of the encounter between Dan Gharibian (bouzouki, guitar and vocals) and Bruno Girard (violin and vocals). They will be joined by Pierre Jacquet to the double bass and Franзois Castiello on accordion and vocals. The family is finally reunited with the arrival of Nano Peylet the clarinet and vocals.
The 1993 live release Bratsch: Gypsy Music From The Heart Of Europe [Network 55.832] is the stuff of legend among connoisseurs - a deft celebration of vivaciousness, unhinged improvisations and telepathic ensemble work clicking like the Dream Team. It stems from not only years of performing together but also close personal friendships. Marvelous tunes act like excavation tunnels. They reach deep into the soil of Kletzmer, Rom, Gitan, Manouche and Sinti tradition to uncover the caves hiding their forgotten treasure. Like multi-hued rays of refracted light, their brilliance again fills this domain in recognizable likeness while also modulated by contemporary influences and individual spirits.

Jean-Luc Ponty - Live at Donte's (1995)

     Artist: Jean-Luc Ponty
     Album: Live at Donte's
     Label: Blue Note Records
     Year: 1995
     Genre: Jazz
     Format, bitrate: MP3@192 kbps
     Time: 71:53
     Size: 99 Mb

Recorded live at Donte's, North Hollywood, California, on March 12-13, 1969

In October 1969 violinist Jean-Luc Ponty recorded a notable live set with keyboardist George Duke, bassist John Heard and drummer Dick Berk that gained him a lot of exposure in the U.S. He had actually played at Donte's in Los Angeles with Duke (on acoustic piano), Heard and drummer Al Cecchi the previous March. Four of the songs came out on a 1981 LP. This CD reissues that program and then doubles it with four more songs from the same engagement. This is a release that is particularly recommended to listeners who are not interested in Ponty's many fusion projects for his playing here is relatively straightahead and sounds influenced by the work of the mid-1960's Miles Davis Quintet, and not just because he performs Ron Carter's "Eighty-One." Also of great interest are the solos of Duke, who would eventually become a funk keyboardist and then a pop producer. In this context he sounds like a mixture of McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock.

Entre chien et loup ("Between dog and wolf"; translated here as Owl-Light ) is a remarkable album, most notably because it hovers between classical and jazz, a realm already explored to some degree by Ellington and the artist/composers on the now hard-to-find LP The Birth of the Third Stream. In this sense the original French title speaks volumes, as the music lies somewhere between the domesticated pet that is classical and the wild, unruly wolf that is jazz – speaking in the most general metaphorical terms, of course. The spontaneous appears alongside the structured, like the way the breezy piano/accordion number "Danse 7" comes before the four-part suite entitled "Les Errances d’une Valse" written in 11/4 time.

Derek & The Dominos - Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs (1970)
     Artist: Derek & The Dominos
Album: Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
     Label: Polydor
     Year: 1990
     Genre: Blues, Blues Rock
     Tracks: 14
     Format: flac (5)
     File Size: 4 x 99 MB + 1 x 54 MB

Layla stands as one of a handful of pillars of classic rock. The short-lived ensemble that was the Dominos provided an outlet for Eric Clapton to vent his then unrequited (and secret) passion for the wife of his best friend, George Harrison. Romantic anguish inspired Clapton to write and collect an embroiling and interconnected song cycle. Meanwhile, latecomer Duane Allman prodded Clapton to tear it up on guitar, so as not to be overwhelmed by his even more talented foil. Of course, Clapton eventually won the hand of his lady love. And then he divorced her. Sometimes real life messes up a good plot line.

Album: A Tribute to Andy Razaf
     Year: 1956
     Label: DCC
     Size: 92 mb
     Quality: mp3, 320 kb/s

Maxine Sullivan always had a cheerful and subtly swinging style. This formerly rare release (originally on the Period label) finds her interpreting a dozen numbers that have the lyrics of Andy Razaf including such classics as "Keeping out of Mischief Now," "Stompin' at the Savoy," "Honeysuckle Rose," "Memories of You" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." Joined by a sextet reminiscent of John Kirby's group of 15 years earlier (and featuring such Kirby alumni as trumpeter Charlie Shavers and clarinetist Buster Bailey), Sullivan is in top form on this delightful session.

Horace Parlan Trio - My Little Brown Book (2007)
     Artist: Horace Parlan
     Album: My little brown book
     Year: 2007
     Label: Stunt
     Quality: 320 kbps mp3
     Size: 75 + 40 mb

Blame it on Bertrand Tavenier’s ‘Round Midnight or any other mythologizing bit of media: Expatriate jazz musicians still enjoy a healthy amount of manufactured mystique. Pianist Horace Parlan is among this celebrated cadre and has been for years. A resident of Denmark for decades, he’s quietly been composing and performing music in local clubs to adulatory audiences in a style that strays little from his work as leader and first call sideman in the 1950s and 60s. Recorded in the intimate company of altoist Christina von Bьlow and bassist Jesper Lundgaard in Parlan’s home, the program is tilted heavily toward standards. A pair of Parlan originals slips right in beside familiar pieces by Strayhorn and Miles among others. Parlan’s approach is measured, more low flame simmer than blow torch bluster and complementary to the domestic surroundings. The absence of drums also aids in this regard, enhancing the chamber jazz elements of the instrumentation and giving von Bьlow a springy, but uncluttered surface with which to etch her watercolor melodic lines. She rarely deviates too drastically from the themes, phrasing in a light aerated caresses that suggests an amalgam of Benny Carter and Bird.
Parlan’s fingers work in careful collusion and at times his patterns feel a shade too premeditated. Lundgaard anchors the bottom, amiable to the occasional solo slot, but seemingly just as happy to amble along beside his colleagues. Highlights of the set include an eloquent rendering of ”Everything Happens to Me”, where the playfully pessimistic lyrics are virtually sung via von Bьlow’s choruses, and a lengthy concluding stroll through Strayhorn’s beatific ballad ”Lotus Blossom”. Parlan’s long since progressed past the point of proving himself. That palpable self-awareness and confidence makes for a performance refreshingly free of ego or agenda. These three are simply playing for the pure joy of it and that admirable, angst free incentive channels beautifully into the music. It also effectively dispels the aura ex-pat mystique surrounding Parlan’s person and reveals a man at peace with himself and his profession.

Harpist Deborah Henson-Conant teams up with bassist Wolfgang Diekmann and percussionist Davey Tulloch for live versions of ten of her originals. Henson-Conant, who also contributes vocals and humorous introductions, proves to be quite a showperson in addition to being a superior harpist. The music falls somewhere between advanced bop, crossover and even cabaret. No matter what it is called, this release from the German label Laika is colorful and entertaining, not merely a replay of Henson-Conant's GRP recordings. Scott Yanow, AMG

It's amazing what you can find in the 99 rack in some record stores. On this release, the Dirty Dozen drops "Brass Band" from their name and adds a keyboardist and a trap set drummer, instead of the New Orleans brass band style separate bass drummer and snare drummer. Traditionalists may bitch and moan about the band's changes; nevertheless, Ears To the Wall sho' nuff be some fonky stuff. It's neat to hear the tuba (technically, it's a sousaphone) play the bass parts along with the trap set drummer. This mostly instrumental old-school-meets-new-school release should be satisfying to anyone who is looking for something a little different. - Tim Griggs, AMG

Charlie Shavers was one of the great trumpeters to emerge during the swing era, a virtuoso with an open-minded and extroverted style along with a strong sense of humor. He originally played piano and banjo before switching to trumpet, and he developed very quickly. In 1935, he was with Tiny Bradshaw's band and two years later he joined Lucky Millinder's big band. Soon afterward he became a key member of John Kirby's Sextet where he showed his versatility by mostly playing crisp solos while muted. Shavers was in demand for recording sessions and participated on notable dates with New Orleans jazz pioneers Johnny Dodds, Jimmy Noone, and Sidney Bechet. He also had many opportunities to write arrangements for Kirby and had a major hit with his composition "Undecided." After leaving Kirby in 1944, Charlie Shavers worked for a year with Raymond Scott's CBS staff orchestra, and then was an important part of Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra from 1945 until past TD's death in 1956. Although well-featured, this association kept Shavers out of the spotlight of jazz, but fortunately he did have occasional vacations in which he recorded with the Metronome All-Stars and toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic; at the latter's concerts in 1953, Shaver's trumpet battles with Roy Eldridge were quite exciting. After Dorsey's death, Shavers often led his own quartet although he came back to the ghost band from time to time. During the 1960s, his range and technique gradually faded, and Charlie Shavers died from throat cancer in 1971 at the age of 53. ~ Scott Yanow

An exhilarating blend of Eastern European-inflected musics loosely tethered to a klezmer attack, with a fondness for opalescent clarinet epiphanies. A studied boozy looseness ("Sicar Mangue Drom," "Nane Tsora") is par for the ethos of the road, but these purported French-based Gypsies are unable to mask a taste for high culture that elevates a ragged Gallic fiddle/wind/accordion troupe to moments of rich ensemble luster. We get breathtaking speed, diversity and transmutation, but we lose the illusion of seat-of-the-pants recklessness that flings the best klezmer airborne. ~ Bob Tarte, All Music Guide
