Wardell Gray Memorial I
Artist:Wardell Gray
Album:Memorial I
Label: Prestige
Years:1949.1953
Quality Mp3 320 +covers +5% recovery
Size:128Mb

The first volume of Gray's recordings for Prestige provides a complete anatomy of a 1949 quartet session with the superb rhythm section of pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter, and drummer Roy Haynes, a unit then working regularly with Charlie Parker. The multiple takes of "Twisted" reveal the evolution of a bop masterpiece, a performance that has been further immortalized in Annie Ross's vocal version of Gray's improvisation (available on King Pleasure Sings/Annie Ross Sings). The final four tracks come from a 1953 session led by vibraphonist Teddy Charles, with strong contributions from Gray and another brilliant and doomed bopper, the young Sonny Clark.

Artist: Booker Little
Album: Out Front + 1
Label: Candid
Quality: FLAC & MP3@320
Size: 289 MB & 113 MB
Time: 50:16

Booker Little was the first trumpet soloist to emerge in jazz after the death of Clifford Brown to have his own sound. His tragically brief life (he died at age 23 later in 1961) cut short what would have certainly been a major career. Little, on this sextet date with multi-reedist Eric Dolphy, trombonist Julian Priester, and drummer Max Roach, shows that his playing was really beyond bebop. His seven now-obscure originals (several of which deserve to be revived) are challenging for the soloists and there are many strong moments during these consistently challenging and satisfying performances. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

REPOST with new links

The title refers to the Michel Legrand piece performed twice on the date, and to the fact that pianist Bill Evans was on the verge of switching labels from Fantasy to Warner Bros. For his final Fantasy album, Evans, bassist Eddie Gómez, and drummer Eliot Zigmund perform memorable renditions of such songs as Herbie Hancock's "Dolphin Dance," Johnny Mandel's "Seascape," and Burt Bacharach's underrated "A House Is Not a Home." The CD reissue adds two additional selections ("Nobody Else But Me" and "Orson's Theme") from this excellent series of sessions. Fine post-bop music from an influential piano giant. -- AMG

B.B. King - One Kind Favor (2008)     Artist: B.B. King

     Genre: Blues
     Tracks: 12
     Format: MP3, Bitrate: @ CBR 320 kbit/s
     Size: 61 MB + 63 MB

This isn't just B.B. King's best album in years, it's one of the strongest studio sets of his career, standing alongside classics such as Singin' the Blues and Lucille. Where those early titles highlighted his youthful, wailing vocals and stinging guitar, this one plays to King's current strengths: the tear-stained vibrato of his mature voice, punctuated by raunchy licks. For too long, King has drowned in slick production, propped up by stiff duets with the likes of Eric Clapton. Here, King is front and center, with a killer backing band — Jim Keltner (John Lennon, Mick Jagger) on drums, Nathan East (Clapton) on stand-up bass and Dr. John on piano — that remains in the background. King is heartbreakingly intimate on standards like Blind Lemon Jefferson's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" and John Lee Hooker's "Blues Before Sunrise." How did the 82-year-old find his old passion? With T Bone Burnett, naturally — the producer whose understated touch helped bring Robert Plant and John Mellencamp into their twilight years with dignity. Those projects were mere dress rehearsals for this one.

Art Farmer & Gigi Gryce - When Farmer Meets Gryce     Artists: Art Farmer and Gigi Gryce
     Album: When Farmer meets Gryce
     Label: Prestige / OJC
     Year: 1954-1955
     Quality: MP3 320 kbit/s +covers + 5% recovery
     Size: 88 Mb

Art Farmer and Gigi Gryce's "When Farmer Met Gryce" is one of the best pre-Jazztet recordings by the great, late trumpeter. Originally released as two 10-inch LPs, "When Farmer Meets Gryce" is actually two sessions. The first four tunes are from a May 19, 1954 performance featuring the rhythm trio of Horace Silver, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke, and tracks 5-8 are from a May 26, 1955 date with Freddie Redd, Art's brother Addison and Art Taylor. Of course, Art plays trumpet and Gigi Gryce is on alto sax on both sessions. All eight of the disc's compositions were penned by Gryce, who along with Farmer's future Jazztet co-founder Benny Golson, was one of Prestige's (and the late 50s jazz scene in general) best writer/arrangers. "When Farmer Met Gryce" was truly a momentous event.

Buck Clayton - Lucky Draw
Artist - Buck Clayton
Album - Lucky Draw
Label - OJS/ZIX
Year - 1946, release - 2006
Quality - MP3@256 kbps
Size - 64,8 mb
Total time - 36:36

This limited-edition CD features small-group swing originally issued on the H.R.S. label from three different sessions in 1946. On one date, the great trumpeter Buck Clayton heads an octet with both Trummy Young and Dicky Wells on trombones; on another occasion he leads an unusual pianoless quartet that also includes clarinetist Scoville Brown, guitarist Tiny Grimes and bassist Sid Weiss. In addition, Clayton is heard as a sideman with Trummy Young's septet, which also features clarinetist Buster Bailey. Swing was going very much out of style at the time, and these somewhat obscure dates can be considered among the final small-group swing sessions of the classic era. More importantly, all of the principals sound creative and full of spirit. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

Artist: Sarah Vaughan
Album: In the Land of Hi-Fi
Label: EmArcy MG 36058
Quality: FLAC & MP3@320
Size:111 MB & 75 MB
Time: 33:35

This single CD (whose contents are also included in the box set The Complete Sarah Vaughan on Mercury Vol. 1) has one of the great singer's best jazz dates for EmArcy. Accompanied by an all-star orchestra arranged by Ernie Wilkins and featuring altoist Cannonball Adderley (who was near the beginning of his career), Vaughan is in superior form during these concise (around three minutes apiece) performances, particularly on "Soon," "Cherokee," "I'll Never Smile Again" and "An Occasional Man." A strong session. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

     Size: 106 Mb

The two great tenors, Dexter Gordon and Johnny Griffin, battle it out on in exciting fashion on live versions of "Blues Up and Down" and "Cake." Bop singer Eddie Jefferson and trumpeter Woody Shaw join Gordon and his quartet (pianist George Cables, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Eddie Gladden) on "Diggin' In" and "It's Only a Paper Moon" and Gordon takes Thelonious Monk's ballad "Ruby My Dear" as his feature. Everything works quite well on this diverse but consistent LP, one of Dexter Gordon's later efforts. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

    Album: Sonic Text
    Label: Contemporary(original Jazz classic)
    Year : 1975
    Quality: Mp3 + 5 % Recovery
    Size: 105 Mb

This is an excellent straight-ahead outing matching Joe Farrell (who takes four songs on tenor and one apiece on soprano and flute) with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, keyboardist George Cables, bassist Tony Dumas, and drummer Peter Erskine. Originally cut for the Contemporary label, the set has six group originals (by Farrell, Hubbard, and Cables) that are performed at the perfect length, mostly between six and eight and a half minutes (other than the 12-minute "Malibu"). The concise solos make expert use of every note, and the results are both fresh and swinging.

Album:You Gotta Pay the Band
Label: Polygram Records
Year:October 22, 1991
Quality APE & CUE
Size: 284 Mb
Total time - 57:56

Stan Getz is featured on one of his final recordings on this excellent Abbey Lincoln CD; Getz's cool tenor fits in very well with Lincoln's voice, making one wish that they had met up previously. With pianist Hank Jones, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Mark Johnson, and (on two songs) Maxine Roach's viola completing the group, it is not surprising that Lincoln sounds typically inspired. Actually, her version of "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" is a bit of a misfire with its dated lyrics (which should have been modified and altered to fit a female). However, "Bird Alone," Freddie Hubbard's "Up Jumped Spring" (given lyrics by Lincoln), and five of her originals more than compensate. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Gilles Coquard continues with Reïsa a work of arrangement with many artists and produces a more personal expression within the group formed for the Reïsa album, with Marcel Loeffler, Pascal Martinez and Pascal Coquard. Fine melodist, it offers to us with this last disc a particularly melody jazz where the musical topics engraved with precision, answer of great beaches of controlled improvisations which give the share bell to instrumental virtuosity. Between subtle recoveries and compositions, Reïsa proposes a ludic jazz, that the complicity of the three musicians makes available to all the public ones.

Violinist Stephane Grappelli has recorded so many fine sets during the past two decades that although virtually all of them are enjoyable, most are not essential. This fine concert performance with a quartet (which also includes the guitars of Marc Fosset and Martin Taylor) is typical of Grappelli's ability to infuse familiar melodies that he has performed a countless number of times with enthusiasm, energy and wit. Pianist Martial Solal and violinist Svend Asmussen make guest appearances but most of the focus is on the great Grappelli, who never seems to have an off day. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.
