Frank Sinatra - Songs For Young Lovers/Swing Easy 2LP/1CD

Combining Frank Sinatra's first two ten-inch albums for Capitol, the compact disc Songs for Young Lovers/Swing Easy! not only contains some of the best music Sinatra recorded, it captures a turning point in popular music. Songs for Young Lovers was the first album Frank Sinatra recorded for Capitol, as well as his first collaboration with Nelson Riddle. It was also one of the first -- arguably the very first -- concept album. Sinatra, Riddle, and producer Voyle Gilmore decided that the new album format should be a special event, featuring a number of songs arranged around a specific theme; in addition, the new format was capable of producing a more detailed sound, which gave Riddle more freedom in his arrangements and orchestrations. Songs for Young Lovers is a perfect example of this. Supported by a small orchestra, Sinatra and Riddle create an intimate, romantic atmosphere on the record, breathing new life into standards like "My Funny Valentine," "They Can't Take That Away From Me," "I Get a Kick Out of You," and "A Foggy Day." There is a breezy confidence to Sinatra's singing, and Riddle's arrangements are more complex than they initially appear. Sinatra and Riddle expanded this approach on his second Capitol album, Swing Easy! As the title implies, the record concentrates on up-tempo swingers. Again, the songs were all standards -- "Just One of Those Things," "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams," "All of Me" -- that benefited from the new thematic setting, the new arrangements, and, of course, Sinatra's increasingly playful and textured vocals. Sinatra plays around with the melodies without leaving them behind, delivering each line with precision. It ranks as one of his most jazzy performances, as well as one of his most fun and carefree records. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

"I had a sound in mind, a quartet with trumpet, baritone sax, organ and drums. I played with George Benson back in the 60's and that was the set up he used. It was very simple but the groove was so strong I felt that if I did a live recording it would be with players like Randy Brecker, Lonnie Smith (who was the organist in Benson's band) and Ronnie Burrage, it would be that sound all over again." - Ronnie Cuber

This is the most rewarding of baritonist Ronnie Cuber's three Projazz CDs which were originaly made for the Japanese King label and released domestically through Intersound. Cuber romps with trumpeter Randy Brecker, organist Lonnie Smith and drummer Ronnie Burrage on two of his originals ("Trane's Waltz" and "Philly's Blues") and a variety of jazz standards. In some ways this band was a throwback to Cuber's early recordings with George Benson and Lonnie Smith despite the lack of a guitar. Enjoyable and often-heated hard bop. - Scott Yanow

We knew about his talents as an instrumentalist. With “Sessions”, Marcel Loeffler confirms his qualities as composer. With a strange melancholic tone oft times, this second album with this title will make its mark: marvelously backed up by Gauthier Laurent (string bass), Jean-Yves Jung (piano and Fender Rhodes) and Olivier Strauch (trap set), his jazz accordion navigates with his brilliant fellow musicians on a sea of tenderness, generosity and warmth where swing gives the effect of a delicious crest.
Nine personal and elegant numbers easily support a comparison with two beautiful reprises (“Voyage”, of Kenny Baron, and “I can’t get started” by Vernon Duke). A sublime tango (“Sonia’s”), a sensuous ballad (“Promenade”) and a majestuous composition (“Six months for a day”) with singer Lisa Doby – indeed a must-see talent – takes this album to a new zenith.

It is always worth going back to a CD which on first listening doesn’t appeal. I bought this CD because there was link to it on Amazon from other Bireli Lagrene CDs I had been viewing. It was a busy day and I just selected the two tracks with Bireli and listened to those, they were good but they were accordion and electric guitar as a duo and they weren’t in the mainstream gypsy jazz style. I rather forgot about the CD until a couple of weeks ago when I was tidying up our house and I found it again, I put it on and listened whilst I went about my work. There are a rather eclectic selection of tunes and styles (a vocalist singing ‘Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho’ anyone?) but there are many great gypsy jazz tracks with some great playing by Marcel Loeffler on accordeon and Yorgui Loeffler on lead guitar, with many other Loefflers on rhythm guitars. Marcel Loeffler is a new player to me and it is always good to find another virtuosic button accordeon player to listen to.

The Story Of The ODJB, в которой утверждал, что он изобрел джаз, а негритянские музыканты украли у него это изобретение. ~ Энциклопедический справочник «Джаз. Cale is one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a very loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz influences. Cale's personal style has often been described as "laid back", and is characterized by shuffle rhythms, simple chord changes, understated vocals, and clever, incisive lyrics. Cale is also a very distinctive and idiosyncratic guitarist, incorporating both Travis-like fingerpicking and gentle, meandering electric solos. - from wikipedia.org

J.J. Cale's Troubadour is a timeless recording of the highest caliber. As a music lover with an extensive portfolio of rock, blues, roots, soul, jazz, and classical, this is a CD that gets played regularly. Troubadour immediately connects with the listener and will prompt friends to inquire about the artist creating the cool, laid-back sound. This is one of those ten desert island discs to consider owning. Highly recommended. ~ amazon.com

Like other volumes in Topaz's album Jazz and Blues series, the Bessie Smith disc presents a miscellaneous collection of tracks with next-to-nothing in the way of annotation. Smith's catalog is controlled by Columbia Records, which seems to be the source for the 22 performances here, but they have been licensed from Rod McKuen's Stanyan Records and are attributed to "the collection of T. Richard Williams." In any case, such tracks as "'Tain't Nobody's Business" and "St. Louis Blues" are among Smith's classics, and at a $9.98 list price, it should be possible to obtain this album for much less than any of the Columbia/Legacy box sets. But for that you're only getting a taste of what is best experienced as a sumptuous meal.

Booker Little and Friend (+2)   Artist: Booker Little
Album: Booker Little and Friend (+2)
   Label: Bethlehem BCP 6061
   Quality: FLAC & MP3@320
   Size: 375 MB & 131 MB
   Time: 58:30

A CD reissue of trumpeter Booker Little's Victory and Sorrow album for Bethlehem, this release adds two previously unheard alternate takes of "Matilde" to the original program. Little's final recording before he died of uremia at the age of 23, the sextet session also features fine playing by trombonist Julian Priester, tenor saxophonist George Coleman, pianist Don Friedman, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Pete LaRoca. However, Booker Little is generally the top soloist on the harmonically advanced hard bop date and he is in peak form throughout although he would pass away on October 5 of that year. Of his six originals, "Molotone Music" and "Victory and Sorrow" are most memorable even if Little's beautiful playing on a quartet version of the date's one standard, "If I Should Lose You," is actually the highpoint.
