This 1989 CD has a sampling of the Victor recordings that featured Bix Beiderbecke. The masterful cornetist is heard on two numbers with Jean Goldkette's Orchestra (including the classic "Clementine"), on 18 of his best selections with Paul Whiteman (including two versions of "When"), and on two cuts from his lone date as a leader in 1930; one can certainly hear Beiderbecke's decline on "Deep Down South." The main reasons to acquire this CD are the Whiteman selections, which include "Changes," "San," "There Ain't No Sweet Man," "Dardanella," "From Monday On" and "You Took Advantage of Me." Bing Crosby and the Rhythm Boys have a few notable vocals, and C-melody saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer is heard from. Overall, this is a fine introduction to Bix's Whiteman days. However, the picture is not really complete, since his 1929 recordings were made for Columbia, and completists will want to opt for more comprehensive sets. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Hans Dulfer (father of Candy Dulfer) is one of the most successful and versatile Dutch (jazz) musicians. Dulfer closely follows the latest trends, but deep down he will always remain a jazz musician. For many years he is more concerned about playing live than about recording music. In the '90s, however, he starts spending more time in the studio, which ultimately results in more success at home and even mega stardom in Japan.
In 1994 Dulfer records the dance album Big Boy from which the hit single Streetbeats is taken. In the meantime his star is rising in Japan. Especially for the Japanese market he releases the album Hyperbeat. The album becomes the best selling instrumental album of the year and Dulfer is awarded a Golden Disc Award.
His 1995 album Dig! largely follows the line of Big Boy. One of the singles taken from the album is the title track. The album is successful in various European countries and in Japan. Dulfer tours the Far East and Europe (Roskilde, Denmark).

   Down With It is a fairly standard bop and soul-jazz session from Blue Mitchell. Leading a quintet that features a young Chick Corea on piano, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor, and drummer Al Foster, Mitchell creates a laid-back atmosphere which makes R&B covers like "Hi-Heel Sneakers" or the lite bossa nova of "Samba De Stacy" roll along nicely. Just as often, the record is so relaxed that it fails to generate much spark, but each the soloists have fine moments that makes the session worthwhile for jazz purists.
