Нежная, филигранная "музыкальная акварель" от Kenny Drew и Niels-Henning Шrsted Pedersen. Хочется слушать и слушать... love

Mal Waldron-Thad Jones-Kenny Burrell - After Hours (1957)     Artists: Mal Waldron, Thad Jones, Kenny Burrell
     Album: After Hours
     Year: 1957
     Label: Prestige/Original Jazz Classics
     Time: 41:07
     Format: MP3 @320kbps
     Size: 104mb (RS.com, with 5% file recovery)
     Includes Covers + Scans
     AMG Rating: 4 stars

Although Thad Jones' name appears first on this CD reissue, pianist Mal Waldron is actually the session's main force. Waldron contributed all four selections (all of which are worthwhile, even if none caught on) and is a key soloist with the sextet, which also includes trumpeter Jones, Frank Wess on tenor and flute, guitarist Kenny Burrell, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor. Fine straight-ahead music, very much in the modern mainstream of 1957. -- AMG

REPOST! Mal Waldron - an American jazz and world music pianist and composer was born today, 83 years ago!
His jazz work was chiefly in the hard bop, post-bop and free jazz genres. He is known for his distinctive chord voicings and adaptable style, which was originally inspired by the playing of Thelonious Monk.

Artist - Tommy Castro
Album - Can't Keep a Good Man Down
Label - Blind Pig
Genre - Blues Rock,Contemporary Blues
Quality - mp3@ 256 kb/s, stereo
Size - 94,36 mb

The charismatic Tommy Castro is the fastest-rising star on the blues horizon. This new CD features Tommy's masterful guitar work, soulful vocals, and the tightest band around.
"...Castro upgrades his blues status from promising talent to fully developed master....Castro can burn with the best..." - Down Beat - 4 stars (out of 5)

В 1997 году Tommy Castro выпустил свой второй альбом Can't Keep A Good Man Down для Blind Pig Records.

Album: The Wes Montgomery Trio

Year: 1959

While even label executive Orrin Keepnews admits that The Wes Montgomery Trio may have fallen short of representing Montgomery's talent, he still felt that this debut captured a large portion of it. Recorded on October 5 and 6 in 1959, guitarist Montgomery is joined by organist Melvin Rhyne and drummer Paul Parker. Montgomery's style, block chords and octaves, is already firmly in place, and he delivers lovely solos on "'Round Midnight," "Whisper Not," and "Satin Doll." The choice of material, in fact, from classics like "Yesterdays" to originals like Montgomery's "Jingles," never falters. The only drawback is that the accompaniment, which though solid, doesn't seem to perfectly match his guitar style. One gets the impression that Montgomery's forceful, deliberate style would be better-served by beefier arrangements. Having said this, Montgomery's performance -- coming at the end of a decade represented by guitarists like Tal Farlow and Barney Kessel -- was a revolution in technique and execution. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a 36-year-old guitarist re-imagines the jazz guitar solo. There are two bonus tracks on The Wes Montgomery Trio: extra takes of "Satin Doll" and "Missile Blues." Although later Riverside recordings of Montgomery are more fully realized, fans will enjoy returning to the moment when he first burst upon the jazz scene. [The album appeared again in 2004, newly remastered and with bonus tracks intact.] ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., All Music Guide

Singer/guitarist Slim Gaillard and bassist Slam Stewart made for a frequently hilarious and outrageous team. Gaillard's jive talk and the basic but memorable originals (best-known of which is "The Flat Foot Floogie") made Slim & Slam a popular group in the late '30s. All of their joint recordings were reissued in a perfectly done box set for Affinity a few years ago, so this single disc pales in comparison. and since eight of the 20 numbers that are included here are alternate takes (including "Floogie"), this is not quite a definitive introductory or greatest-hits set either, although beginners should be delighted by the music. The performances (which sometimes includes such guests as trumpeter Al Killian, clarinetist Garvin Bushell, drummers Kenny Clarke and Chico Hamilton and tenor great Ben Webster) are quite fun, but a bit more planning should have gone into the programming. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

REPOST with new link

This Muse recording differs from many of tenor saxophonist Houston Person's previous ones in that Person is backed by a piano rather than an organ; he sounds inspired by the "new" setting. Person heads a sextet also including trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, pianist Stan Hope, bassist Buster Williams, drummer Grady Tate and percussionist Ralph Dorsey. They perform the tenor's "Just for You" and five standards, with the highlights including Benny Carter's "Only Trust Your Heart," "Almost Like Being in Love" and a blues-drenched version of "It's the Talk of the Town." A particularly strong effort by the very consistent tenor great. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

With pieces like "I'se a Muggin'" and "You'se a Viper," it's easy to dismiss jazz violinist Stuff Smith as a novelty and jive act, which is a shame, since his early bands were exciting, driving ensembles, and thanks to Smith's horn-like approach to the violin, completely unlike any other bands before or since. This delightful set combines sessions held in February, March, July and August of 1936 (originally released by Vocalion Records) with a session from May of 1937 (released by Decca Records) and adds in three live broadcast tracks from a pair of shows in 1936 and another from 1937 at the Onyx Club in New York. The end result is darn near seamless and spotlights a band that swings like the building is on fire. "I'se a Muggin'" is collected here in two parts (with an alternate version of one) and as a live performance. "You'se a Viper" is also here, but there's so much more to marvel at, like the rapid and breezy "I Hope Gabriel Likes My Music" and the storming "Twilight in Turkey." Smith's horn approach to the violin, even drawing the bow in such a way as to mimic the breath pauses of a horn player, is highlighted on the wonderful "Robins and Roses," which is all the proof anyone should ever need that Smith was far more than a novelty act. Oh, he was novel, certainly, since no one else plays the violin like that, and he could undoubtedly jive with the best of them, but make no mistake, his mid-'30s bands were as exciting as any around, and Smith deserves more acclaim than he generally receives as a jazz innovator and bandleader. This set is a wonderful place to enter Stuff's amazing world. ~ Steve Leggett, AMG

This segment of the Stuff Smith story finds the fiddler facing personal and professional difficulties that prevented him from recording as much as he'd have liked to. The music that did get committed to wax is more or less uniformly satisfying. The first five selections heard here benefit greatly from the presence of trumpet ace Jonah Jones. "Big Wig in the Wigwam," a song with little redeeming social value when presented by Lionel Hampton, became a solid piece of swing when Stuff's band got a hold of it. Here it bristles with elements of "Diga Diga Doo" and Stuff's earlier rowdy masterpiece "Old Joe's Hittin' the Jug." Four titles released on the budget Varsity label in 1940 include a Grenadine-flavored sob story by Stella Brooks, two high-spirited group vocals, and a wild "Crescendo in Drums," with violin improvisations that seem like premonitions of the sound currents that Leroy Jenkins would be generating with his violin many years later. In November of 1943, Stuff Smith & His Trio made ten sides for the World Broadcasting Service, with Stuff's solos resembling some of Eddie South's best work, with flourishing touches worthy of Florian Zabach. Featured here and on the following two sessions were bassist John Levy and pianist Jimmy Jones, both excellent improvisers who were perfectly suited to Stuff Smith's style and persona. A quartet date with amplified guitarist Mary Osborne sports a pair of modernistic studies in blue, and the vocal duet between Stuff and Osbourne is deservedly famous among people who are interested in historical collaborations. This fine CD closes with six additional trio sides produced by Moses Asch, sounding pleasantly progressive for 1944. ~ arwulf arwulf, AMG

Widely loved and hated, the Starbucks coffee chain has been playing host to some very good jazz groups. The first live recording from a Starbucks store came from bass legend Ray Brown and his trio, featuring Geoff Keezer on piano and Karriem Riggins on drums. The trio dealt in what used to be called the big beat — a deep-pocketed swing that rhythm sections of old would serve up as a matter of course. Riggins's lithe trap work and Brown's bass — beautifully recorded, with reverberating lows that shake the floor — provide a rock-solid foundation for the chopsy yet impeccably soulful piano inventions of Keezer, who remains one of the instrument's most thrilling technicians. Particularly effective is the mid-set Ellington trilogy, beginning with the rollicking "Mainstem" and ending with a furious "Caravan," with a poetic, swinging bass feature on "Love You Madly" sandwiched in between. (Check out Keezer's "My Favorite Things" reference at the end of "Caravan.") Other highlights include Tadd Dameron's "Our Delight," a subtle "I Should Care," and the bluesiest "When I Fall in Love" you're likely to hear. ~ David R. Adler, AMG

Pianist Oscar Peterson joins up with his old friends, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and bassist Ray Brown, in addition to his drummer of the period, Louis Hayes, for a particularly enjoyable outing. After a throwaway version of the Rolling Stones' "I Can't Get No Satisfaction," the all-star quartet performs Jackson's title cut, Benny Carter's ballad "Dream of You" and four standards. Although not up to the excitement of Peterson's best Pablo recordings of the 1970s, this is an enjoyable album. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

For this interesting set, organist Larry Young (the first musician on his instrument to really move beyond Jimmy Smith's soul-jazz into the avant-garde) mostly utilized lesser-known musicians from the Newark, NJ, area: Tyrone Washington and Herbert Morgan on tenors, flugelhornist Hank White, guitarist Eddie Wright, drummer Eddie Gladden, and Stacey Edwards on congas. "Major Affair" is an organ-drums duet and Larry's wife Althea Young does a haunting version of "Wild Is the Wind," while the other four selections use all of the horns. The adventurous music is sometimes quite intense but also grooves in its own eccentric way, offering listeners a very fresh sound on organ. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

Easily the best album to date by talented jazz/world music percussionist Trilok Gurtu, The Glimpse is a brilliant blend of musical styles paying tribute to the Indian drummer's dearly departed friend, jazz legend Don Cherry. Like Cherry, Gurtu's multicultural influences are often central to his compositions, and with guest musicians like Morocco's Jaya Deva (a member of Cherry's band), India's Geetha Ramanathan Bennett, and Bulgaria's Teodosii Spassov, this is his most ethnically diverse album to date. Nearly every track here is a standout, from the Moroccan groove of "Cherry Town" and the dazzling spoken percussion of "1-2 Beaucoup" to the melancholy balladry of Ornette Coleman's "Law Years." A must-have for fans of world-jazz fusion. ~ Bret Love, All Music Guide

In this acoustic production for MTV Brasil, Rita Lee competently revisits her old successes with important guests: Cássia Eller, Osvaldinho do Acordeon, Armandinho, Paula Toller, Milton Nascimento, Titãs, and her old guitarist (from the Tutti-Frutti band) Lee Marcucci. Rogério Duprat is still a vigorous and dissonant orchestral rock arranger, as shown by the strings and brasses in "O Gosto Do Azedo." The album focuses on tight acoustic rock/ballad performances for her old hits, like "Agora Só Falta Você," "Mania de Você," "Jardins Da Babilônia," "Doce Vampiro," "Luz Del Fuego," the Raul Seixas classic "Gitâ," and 12 other songs.
