Horace Parlan - On the Spur of the Moment |
Jazz, Hard-bop |
Artist: Horace Parlan Album: On the Spur of the Moment Label: Blue Note Recording Date: Mar 18, 1961 Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 301 MB & 96 MB Time: 42:38 Again working with his longtime rhythm section of George Tucker (bass) and Al Harewood (drums), Horace Parlan manages to On the Spur of the Moment make distinctive by emphasizing the rhythmic side of his hard bop. Tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and trumpeter Tommy Turrentine help give the quintet a bluesy edge, which the band exploits to an appealing effect throughout these six, mostly original, compositions. There are a few ballads, and even when things are at their hottest, Parlan's understated playing is a cue for the group to keep it tasteful, but that relaxed atmosphere is part of the reason why On the Spur of the Moment is another winning effort from the underrated pianist. Paavoharju - Laulu laakson kukista |

Artist: Paavoharju Album: Laulu laakson kukista Label: Fonal Year: 2008 Genre: neo folk Format, bitrate: 320 kb/s Time: 35 minutes Size: 80686 KB Paavoharju's second release for Fonal finds Lauri and Olli Ainala, the brothers who make up the core duo, and company again exploring their zest for moody, textured compositions that are part sound-installation, part soundtrack, with an emphasis on generally shorter, sometimes fractured compositions. Often Laulu Laakson Kukista seems like it could just as easily be on the Friendly Noise label from Sweden, as there's a similar sense of technology being used for purposes both elegantly artistic and immediate; if songs like the ebb-and-flow of the opening "Pimeankarkelo" and the drowned-piano fragment "Alania" aren't going to set radios on fire, they are immediately appealing . The merry shuffle and kick of "Kevatrumpu," which sounds like one of the Blade Runner soundtrack's vocal numbers given a murky dance floor setting, and the sweeping "Uskallan," possessing the feeling of a dramatic 1960s film ballad fed through a static-plagued PA — but in intentional and very attractive fashion — are two of the more forthright numbers, sounding like snippets from some grand production sensed only in bits. Other songs like the sea-shanty-goes-Jacques Brel "Italialaisella Laivalla" and the more openly indie-pop "Tytto Tanssii," with its guitar lope and synth-horn break floating over a softly rumbling cloud of melancholic, echoing textures, further add to the understated but enjoyable variety of a fine album. Artist: Lou Donaldson Album: The Artist Selects Label: Blue Note Years: 1952-1968, release: 2005 Quality: MP3@320 kbps Size: 92,0+88,21 mb (with covers) Total time: 71:00 Alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson selected these 13 tracks as his personal favorites that he recorded for Blue Note between 1952 and 1968. During those 16 years, Donaldson embraced bebop, hard bop, and soul-jazz, thanks in part to the cavalcade of legendary musicians who passed through his band, including Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, George Benson, and Grant Green. The collection boasts such solid Donaldson-penned tracks as "Cookin'," "The Blues Walk," "Funky Mama," and "Alligator Boogaloo," which became a hit in 1967. While collectors will have little use for this set, it's perfect for the curious listener. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide |

Paul Whiteman - Original 1927 Recordings |

Artist: Paul Whiteman Album: Original 1927 Recordings Label: Nostalgia Arts/Storyville Year: 1927, release: 2000 Quality: MP3@192 kbps Size: 99,4 mb Total Time: 75:33 1927 was a pivotal year for Whiteman and his band, as they placed a greater emphasis on "hot" tunes while still keeping the more florid arrangements in the book. With the infusion of major jazz talent like Red Nichols and the Dorsey Brothers, and with the vocal group led by Bing Crosby (the Rhythm Boys With Al Rinker and Harry Barris) already in place in the band, Whiteman's music became even more eclectic, both symphonic and swinging, with everything from waltzes to show tunes to pop songs being fair game. Vocalists were getting featured more and, in addition to the Rhythm Boys, were also treated to the hammy but effective stylings of Austin "Skin" Young, the Sweet Trio, and Jack Fulton. No Bix or Trumbauer, but some pretty effective music by a master bandleader. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide |
