     Genre: lovely music
     Format, MP3 bitrate: 320kb/s

REPOST! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CAETANO!

Здесь встречаются как вполне ожидаемые стандарты, вроде "Summertime" или "Nature Boy", так и своеобразные забавные эксперименты - например, "Come as You Are" Курта Кобейна.

REPOST! Happy Birthday, señor Veloso!

REPOST! Roland Kirk - great American jazz multi-instrumentalist was born today 72 years ago!

Art Pepper - No Limit     Artist: Art Pepper

     Year: 1977
     Label: Contemporary/OJC
     Time: 51:18
     Quality: MP3 @320 kbps
     Size: 121 mb

Art Pepper's third recording in his comeback years was recorded in a studio, but has the emotional intensity and chance-taking improvisations of his live concerts of the period. Joined by his regular group (pianist George Cables, bassist Tony Dumas, and drummer Carl Burnette), Pepper performs lengthy versions of three of his originals (including the modal "My Laurie") and "Ballad of the Sad Young Men." "Mambo de la Pinta" is a little unusual because Pepper overdubbed himself on tenor to join his alto in the ensembles. Throughout this album (and during his final ten years), Art Pepper played every note as if it might be his last one. The passion displayed on this particular album is enough of a reason by itself to acquire it. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Sammy Davis, Jr. & Carmen McRae - Porgy and Bess     Artists: Sammy Davis Jr and Carmen McRae

In 1959 Sammy Davis, Jr. and Carmen McRae tried their hand at a recording of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. The record presents a bit of a challenge to fans of Davis and McRae's previous efforts, as the record is piled to the sky with strings, harps, choruses, and pillowy orchestration. On "Summertime" Carmen is nearly drowned out by the orchestra and Sammy has to beat back the orchestra and vocal chorus on too many occasions. He's usually up for it, though; his voice has a magnificent power that might surprise people who know him as just a wisecracking hipster. Listen to him tackle "Bess, You Is My Woman Now" or dazzle his way through "There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon for New York"; it's the sound of a man holding nothing back. Carmen shines too on a dramatic "My Man's Gone Now" that shows what a great interpreter she was and the pair's one duet on the record, "I Loves You Porgy," manages to be sweet despite the overbearing strings. The best tracks on the record are Sammy's romp through "A Woman Is a Sometime Thing" and his storming "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'," tracks that have some energy and jazz pulsing behind the stifling strings and choruses. Call the record an admirable effort or a qualified success, but it never really succeeds as an enjoyable listening experience, because the arrangements are just too proper and academic. They serve to bury the emotion behind the words and weaken the power of the melodies. Credit Sammy and Carmen for holding up their end of the deal. You just have to wonder how much better the record could have been if the arrangements were looser, if there were some swing involved. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide

     Review
It's always interesting when "old-timey" music is interpreted by modern players. Sometimes, the traditions are kept tightly intact, guarded like secrets between best friends, while other times they're more like paper boxes, poked and torn at from the inside with broken guitar strings and fingernails so that other styles can stream in. In the case of Abby DeWald and Amanda Barrett of the Ditty Bops, their sophomore album, Moon Over the Freeway, falls nicely somewhere between the two extremes. The music is heavily influenced by Western swing and Andrews Sisters-type harmonies, but there are also hints of tango, '60s pop, and classical, as well as a strong dose of indie rock. DeWald and Barrett (who play the guitar and the mandolin, respectively) both have clear, strong voices that blend well into one another, which adds a kind of sincerity to their quirky, innocent lyrics. Their songs meander about from topic to topic, pausing briefly at over-inflated egos, love, and irreverence with help from a Greg Rutledge-played piano that sounds like it's straight out of a saloon, an insightful upright bass, and plenty of swing. The words are simple, yet smart and insightful. They explore ironies of urbanization ("We'll frolic in the pesticidy grass beneath the smog/Don't got to worry about beestings, don't got to worry about ants/Now's the time to take off our shoes and dance that cartoon dance" in the lap steel country number "Waking Up in the City") and a hurried life ("What are we really rushing towards/Don't ask me that, get out the door" in the fiddle-driven "Get Up 'n' Go") without ever coming across as cynical, or even necessarily opposed to what's happening. Because DeWald and Barrett are observers, not critics, and they're just trying to enjoy what's around them and what their lives are without being ignorant or unaware. And for the Ditty Bops that means tight harmonies, quick rhythms, a little humor, and a lot of swing.

In 1946, after strolling naked through his L.A. hotel lobby, then igniting a fire while smoking in bed, Charlie Parker was committed to Camarillo State Mental Hospital for six months. In 1954, following two suicide attempts, he was evaluated at New York's Bellevue Hospital as an "evasive personality with manifestations of primitive and sexual fantasies associated with hostility and gross evidence of paranoid thinking." Who better, then, to explicate "Crazeology"? There's just one problem, Doctor. This track shows an engaging personality with manifestations of advanced, fully contextualized creativity associated with camaraderie and refined evidence of audacious thinking. Sometimes even paranoids have enemies.

Horace Parlan - Headin' South     Artist: Horace Parlan
    Album: Headin' South
    Label: Blue Note
    Quality: FLAC & MP3@320
    Size: 262 MB & 93 MB
    Time: 41:40

On the surface, Headin' South is another set of bluesy soul-jazz, but it actually finds the Horace Parlan trio stretching out a little. Adding conga player Ray Barretto to his usual rhythm section of bassist George Tucker and drummer Al Harewood, Parlan decides to take chances with his standard-heavy repertoire. "Summertime" features some evocative bowing from Tucker, and the solo sections on "The Song Is Ended," "Prelude to a Kiss," and "My Mother's Eyes" offer probing, intriguing tonal textures that make the selection of Ahmad Jamal's "Jim Loves Sue" understandable. Barretto's "Congalegre" is a fun, Latin-inflected number, and Parlan's "Headin' South" is a strong, swinging blues, but the slow blues "Low Down" is nearly undone by his incessant circular arpeggio, which lasts for over a minute. Still, that's not nearly enough to sink the record, which is another understated but solid effort from Horace Parlan.

Size - 123 mb (with front cover)

The venerable swamp-rock auteur Tony Joe White — whose songs have been covered by Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr. — roars back into town not only with an impeccable four-decade musical pedigree but also a positively brain-pulping new album. A master of dirty-toned electric-guitar eloquence and off-kilter, ultra-maxi groove mongering, White has consistently explored forbidding musical territory, areas fraught with menace and passion, and he has an abiding insight when it comes to matters of human folly. On the just-released Deep Cuts, the singer-guitarist’s perspective is as resolutely insightful and deeply funk-informed as ever; produced with tastefully apocalyptic doses of severe techno-distortion by his son Jody, it’s a kaleidoscopic mixture of instrumental thrillers and some startling remakes (”Soul Francisco” becomes an ominous, symphonic fuzz and wah-wah workout thrilling in its audacity and execution), all perfectly framing White’s richly muddy, near-subsonic vocals and lowdown, incendiary guitar style. White remains a fabulously individualistic artist, and one who rocks with a vengeful intensity that’s nothing short of wondrous. ~ Jonny Whiteside, La Weekly

Italian pianist Stefano Bollani has again partnered with the top-flight Danish rhythm section of bassist Jesper Bodilsen and drummer Morten Lund to create something very precious: an hour of emotive music that culminates in the blissful title cut, “Gleda (Joy).” While their previous release, Mi Ritorni In Mente (Stunt, 2004), featured standards with Bodilsen as leader, Gleda, by way of Bollani’s modern arrangements, turns a century of Scandinavian tunes into an improvisational delight.

     Album: Rome After Midnight

     Year: 2004
     Format: MP3@192

Italian post-bop trumpet sensation Fabrizio Bosso was born in Turin in 1973. He started playing at the age of five, studying under his father. The young prodigy graduated from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Turin only ten years later at fifteen. While in school Bosso discovered jazz, playing with a big band and in small combos. Upon graduating he was awarded a scholarship to study at St. Mary's College in Washington, where he continued to pursue his new love of improvisation. Starting in 1993, he garnered a national reputation for his flawless technique and exceptionally personal sound, touring under bandleaders like George Russell, Dave Liebman, and the great Steve Coleman. The next year he won Summertime Jazz's Best Band with his quintet, who were soon to make their recording debut. At the age of 26, Bosso's first album as a bandleader, Fast Flight, came out on Red Records. Impressing critics worldwide, Bosso won the "Miglior Nuovo Talento" (Best New Talent) award, chosen in a survey through the Musica Jazz magazine. His second outing as frontman would be for the Blue Note label in 2007. You've Changed furthered Bosso's reputation as one of the most technically impressive young jazz trumpet talents in the world. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez AMG

    Year: 2005
    Format: MP3@320
    Size: 94 MB

Even for seasoned jazz veterans who place a premium on originality, formulas can exert a great appeal. The formula at work on Special Encounter can pretty much be summed up by the name Bill Evans, whose legend as an architect of the modern piano trio rests on the kind of lyrical, bop-tinged ballads and mid-tempo numbers offered here. Joined by a pair of decorated Americans, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian (a member of Evans' groundbreaking turn-of-the-1960s trio), Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi brings his usual elegance and insight to a smart mix of standards such as "You've Changed," Haden staples such as "Waltz for Ruth" and Pieranunzi originals such as the evocative "Secret Nights." If not all that special an encounter, it's certainly an agreeable one: the players, who have hooked up in different settings before, bond as a trio. The mood builds as the musicianship deepens. --Lloyd Sachs
