Cream - Disraeli Gears (1967) Music » Rock music
Cream - Disraeli Gears (1967)     Artist: Cream
     Album: Disraeli Gears
     Label: POLYDOR
     Original Release: 1967
     Release Date: 04/07/1998
     Genre: Blues, Rock
     Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s
     Time: 33 minutes
     Size: 82,9 MB

Cream teamed up with producer Felix Pappalardi for their second album, Disraeli Gears, a move that helped push the power trio toward psychedelia and also helped give the album a thematic coherence missing from the debut. This, of course, means that Disraeli Gears gets further away from the pure blues improvisatory troupe they were intended to be, but it does get them to be who they truly are: a massive, innovative power trio. The blues still courses throughout Disraeli Gears -- the swirling kaleidoscopic "Strange Brew" is built upon a riff lifted from Albert King -- but it's filtered into saturated colors, as it is on "Sunshine of Your Love," or it's slowed down and blurred out as it is on the ominous murk of "Tales of Brave Ulysses." It's a pure psychedelic move that's spurred along by Jack Bruce's flourishing collaboration with Pete Brown. Together, this pair steers this album away from recycled blues-rock and toward its eccentric British core, for with the fuzzy freak-out "Swlabr," the music hall flourishes of "Dance the Night Away," the swinging "Take It Back," and of course, the schoolboy singalong "Monther's Lament," this is a very British record. Even so, this crossed the ocean and became a major hit in America as well, because for no matter how whimsical certain segments are, Cream is still a heavy rock trio and Disraeli Gears is a quintessential heavy rock album of the '60s. Yes, its psychedelic trappings tie it forever to 1967, but the imagination of the arrangements, the strength of the compositions, and especially the force of the musicianship make this album transcend its time as well. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide.
Baden Powell - Tristeza on Guitar Music » Jazz » Latin
Baden Powell - Tristeza on Guitar     Artist: Baden Powell
     Album: Tristeza on Guitar
     Label: Verve
     Year: 1966
     Size: 85 mb
     Quality: mp3, 320 kb/s

Very inspiring, educational and refreshing in these days of perfect-sounding records tweaked to excess in a digital audio workstation. Two such examples are the opening and closing tracks "Tristeza" and "O Astronauta". In these two tracks, Baden is a tightrope walker, plunging along the high wire of improvisation. At points, it sounds like he's faltering, about to fall down, only to recover with a fluorish in the next bar. The man simply knew the fingerboard!
Despite its title, "Tristeza on Guitar" is not a sad album, but a romantic and dreamy excursion into the many facets of Brazilian music, Baden's early influences and the beauty of the guitar.

Baden Powell - Baden Powell Swings with Jimmy Pratt (1963)
     Artist: Baden Powell
Album: Baden Powell Swings With Jimmy Pratt
     Year: 1963
     Label: Elenco / Universal Music
     Genre: Jazz, Guitar
     Format: Mp3, Bitrate: 320
     Time: 25:50
     Size: 59 Mb (Rapidshare.com)

This is one of the greatest Baden Powell LPs of the 60's, Baden Powell Swings with Jimmy Pratt. This is a short set with less than 30 minutes, with the accompaniment of Copinha (flute), Moacir Santos (sax and vocals), Sandoval (clarinet), Sergio Barroso (bass), Jimmy Pratt (drums) and Rubens Bassini (percussion). The piano player is not credit. The arrangements are unusual for a Baden album, featuring a lot of flute and oboe lines on all tracks. The outcome is a breezy Jazz album mixed with Bossa.

Baden Powell - Canto On Guitar
     Artist: Baden Powell
     Album: Canto on Guitar
     Year: 1970
     Quality: mp3@320Kbps
     Size: 92 MB
     Label: MPS
     Total time: 40:26

Recorded in Europe in 1970, it contains some more shining examples of Baden Powell's high-octane playing, as well as his career-long quest to syncretize the Jazz quartet format with the traditional music formats of Brazil. This synthesis doesn't limit itself to samba and bossa-nova.
Canto on Guitar is widely considered to be one of Baden Powell's best albums.

   ...I KNOW
      IT'S ONLY ROCK'N'ROLL
      BUT I LIKE IT... smile

Released in 1994 to coincide with the Stones' catalog moving to Virgin Records, as well as the accompanying remastering of their Rolling Stone Records catalog (1971's Sticky Fingers through 1989's Steel Wheels -- actually 1991's Flashpoint, which is the last Rolling Stones Records release, but isn't featured here), Jump Back supplants Rewind as the best single-disc overview of the Stones' '70s and '80s recordings. The nonchronological order at times is a little irritating -- bouncing between "Brown Sugar," "Harlem Shuffle," "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)," "Mixed Emotions," and "Angie" nearly causes whiplash -- but nearly all the big songs from this period are included. Yes, "She Was Hot" isn't here, along with a couple other singles that didn't catch hold, but this has everything that the casual follower could want, which makes up for the fact that it could have been sequenced better (that's what home programming and burners are for anyway). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide.

Grant Green - Green Street
     Artist: Grant Green
     Album: Green Street
     Label: Blue Note
     Quality: FLAC & MP3@320
     Size: 260 MB & 89 MB
     Time: 39:25

Most of guitarist Grant Green's recordings of the 1960s feature him in larger groups, making this trio outing with bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Dave Bailey a strong showcase for his playing. Green, whose main competitor on guitar at the time was Wes Montgomery, already had his own singing sound and a highly individual horn-like approach. He stretches out on a full set of attractive originals plus "'Round Midnight" and "Alone Together," so this reissue is an excellent introduction to his appealing and hard-swinging style. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
Santana - Ultimate Santana (2007) Music » Rock music
Santana - Ultimate Santana (2007)     Artist: Santana
     Album: Ultimate Santana(European version CD)
     Label: ARISTA
     Year: 2007
     Genre: Rock
     Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s
     Time: 76 min
     Size: 93,3+91,3+10,7 MB

Billed as the first Santana compilation to span his entire career, it is true that Ultimate Santana does indeed run the gamut from 1969's "Evil Ways" to 2002's "Game of Love," but if you think that means it handles all phases of his career equally, you'd be sadly mistaken. Essentially, this 18-track set plays like a collection of highlights from his Supernatural-era comebacks, spiked with a couple of classic rock oldies -- because that's what it really is. It contains no less than ten superstar duets, including new numbers with Nickelback's Chad Kroeger (the streamlined and smoothed "Into the Night," which has little of Kroeger's trademark growly histrionics) and Jennifer Lopez and Baby Bash ("This Boy's Fire," a dance number where Santana seems incidental), plus a version of "The Game of Love" with Tina Turner (don't worry, the lighter, brighter, superior Michelle Branch version is here too) and plus "Interplanetary Party," which is a new band recording that sounds like a star duet. These are piled upon seven previously released duets -- including, of course, the hits "Smooth," "Maria Maria," and "The Game of Love," but also album tracks with Everlast, Steven Tyler, and Alex Band of the Calling -- with classic rock radio staples "Oye Como Va," "Black Magic Woman," "Evil Ways," "Europa," "Samba Pa Ti," and "No One to Depend On" for good measure. In other words, this is certainly not a hits disc for the fan of his earliest music, or his most adventurous music either; it's for the pop fans won over by his latter-day comeback, and for those listeners, it's the hits disc they'd want -- but for everybody else, it's better to seek out other compilations or original albums, because those paint a better picture of what Santana was all about than this crisp, clean collection of lifestyle pop. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide.

     Label: Keytone
     Total time: 54:48
     Genre: world fusion

A combination of musicians, never heard playing together previously, each one representing his own culture. The LP contains a large amount of African elements, whisch mainly come to light and excellently so, via the percussion instruments and different vocals. Thereafter the mystical influence of the so-called New Age Music takes over... Saliah, whose name refers to an African tradition, has been applied in various forms by Hinze, who was so inspired by this ritual that he wrote his own 'Saliah'. What makes Saliah so unique is the fact that the African and Indian influences are so perfectly combined with a not too progressive Western style, varying from American affected fusion-rock to film mood music.... The music of 'Saliah' is open to everyone. ~ from the original liner notes

     Review by Thom Jurek
The historic Norman Granz Jam Sessions, recorded between 1952-1954 for Clef and Mercury, are among the most treasured jam sets of all time. The nine separate albums featured the crème de la crème of New York's jazz community from Charlie Parker to Roy Eldridge, Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, Oscar Peterson, Lionel Hampton and Max Roach and dozens of others. This box set simply collects all nine LPs on five remastered CDs, containing original artwork in a slipcase that fits inside a handsome metal display box. The individual volumes are of consistently very high quality and are utterly indispensable to jazz aficionados. For those who already have the discs, this is merely superfluous. For those who don't, this is a pricey buy but a hell of a way to begin a jazz education.

Japanese-only reissue of this 1956 album by one of the greatest Bebop drummers of all time. Recorded during his five year stint as a member of Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars, Levey is joined on these recordings by then-unknown pianist Sonny Clark, trumpeter Conte Condoli, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and tenorist Richie Kamuca, Although his name is on the cover of the album, Levey is very seldom the center of attention. He drives each song with uncommon grace, yet allows the other players to step into the spotlight with a series of remarkable solos. Features tracks like 'Hit That Thing', 'Blues At Sunrise' and 'Angel Cake'.

The New Cool Collective, founded in 1994, includes some of the coolest musicians on the Dutch music scene. Their music is a fresh and exciting mix of highly danceable soul and jazz, spiced with Latin flavours. Benjamin Herman, New Cool Collective's bandleader and lead saxophonist, is a well known musician in the European jazz circuit, recording his most recent solo album with the Stan Tracey trio. A visit to New York's club `Giant Steps' inspired Herman to start organising jazz parties in Amsterdam with the music being provided by a group of musicians that soon became known as the New Cool Collective.
This new release from New Cool Collective is the much-anticipated live album of the 19-piece Big Band outfit of the group. For thirteen years, people have been asking them after their live shows whether this exhilarating show is also available on CD, and this is the moment! Ten exciting live tracks were selected from five sold-out performances in clubs including Rotown, Sugar Factory, de Pul and Melkweg, together representing the best that New Cool Collective Big Band has to offer live.
