Artist: Aretha Franklin Album: Aretha Sings the Blues Label: Columbia Year: 1985 Genre: Blues Format, bitrate: MP3@320 Kbps Time: 47:38 Size: 111 MB Although not a blues singer in the strictest sense, Aretha Franklin's glorious voice could never make anything dull, especially not blues classics. These songs didn't attract a lot of attention when they came out in the '60s, with a couple of exceptions. These records were made between 1960 and 1965. |

Artist: Elvin Jones Album: Putting It Together Year: 1963 Label: Blue Note Time: 40:45 Format: MP3 @320 kbps Size: 105 mb (RS.com, with 5% file recovery) Includes Covers + Scans AMG Rating: 4 Stars "There can be no doubt the Elvin Jones is one of the greatest drummers in the history of jazz. And, he and Max Roach are certainly the Finest jazz drummers living today. One of the best quotes I’ve heard to describe his playing (in a humorous yet accurate kind of way) is that Jones is ”like a cross between an octopus and the percussion section of the Fifth Army Band.” I’d credit the writer if I could remember who wrote it some 30 or so years ago. But I’ll never forget that quote! Jones propelled the John Coltrane Quartet ( the classic unit with McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison) to unparalleled heights during the early to mid sixties before leaving that band in 1965 to pursue a solo career. While he had recorded some sides for Atlantic while still with Coltrane, and for Impulse just after, it was his Blue Note albums beginning in April of 1968 with the recording of Puttin’ It Together, followed five months later with The Ultimate which really defined him as a leader in his own right." |

Joey Calderazzo - Secrets |

Artist: Joey Calderazzo Album: Secrets Quality: mp3@320 Kbps Size: 107 MB (covers) Year: 1995 Label: AudioQuest Joey Calderazzo may not have achieved the acclaim of some of the pianists of his generation like Benny Green and Bill Charlap, but he has consistently created CDs that stand the test of time. These 1995 sessions for Audio Quest feature him leading a variety of different ensembles ranging from trios to octets with potent arrangements by Bob Belden. Six of the eight tracks are Calderazzo's compositions, highlighted by the infectious horn lines in his rhythmic "Echoes" and the wistful air of "Last Visit Home." His trio with bassist James Genus and drummer Clarence Penn are afire in his driving "No One Knows Why I'm Here" and the explosive "ATM." Belden's setting of Miles Davis' "Filles de Kilimenjaro" has an exotic air with the addition of guitarist Fareed Haque and Charles Pillow's English horn. This is a rewarding disc that deserves to be more widely known. ~ by Ken Dryden, AMG |

Ray Charles - The Great Ray Charles |

Artist: Ray Charles Album: The Great Ray Charles Label: Atlantic Year: 1987 - LP Rec. 1956 Genre: Jazz/Blues Format, bitrate: MP3@320 Kbps Time: 65:47 Size: 150 MB You all know Ray Charles, the blues singer. With 26, and something of a legendary figure, Ray might very well moan that there are no new worlds left to conquer. In this LP he strikes out into new territory — with very promising results. This is an instrumental album, and while it is going to disappoint many that there are no Ray Charles vocals in it, the thrill of discovering Ray Charles, the jazz musician, is going to compensate more than adequately for the non-appearance of Ray Charles, the blues singer. |

J.S. Bach. Morimur - Christoph Poppen & The Hilliard Ensemble |

Composer: J. S. Bach Album: Morimur Artists: Christoph Poppen & The Hilliard Ensemble Label: ECM Records Year: 2000, release: 2001 Format: APE Size: 262 MB Amazon.com's Best of 2001 In 1994, explains the booklet that accompanies Morimur, Professor Helga Thoene made the surprising discovery that the monumental "Ciaccona" from Bach's Partita in D minor for solo violin was built around various chorale themes hidden in the music. From the texts of these "secret" chorales and other symbolic musical devices, she deduced that the "Ciaccona" was an epitaph for Bach's wife, Maria Barbara. The revelation might have remained an intriguing (and touching) footnote to Bach scholarship if baroque violinist Christoph Poppen hadn't had the bright idea of taking Professor Thoene's discovery off the library shelves and placing it triumphantly in the concert hall. On this disc, his performance of all five movements of the whole Partita (BWV 1004) is interspersed with the various chorales hidden inside the "Ciaccona," sung with breathtaking precision by the Hilliard Ensemble. The double whammy comes at the end when the "Ciaccona" is performed again, this time with the singers bringing out the secret melodies. Poppen's playing is excellent, both sweet-toned and vibrant, while the Hilliards have never sounded better: the combination of the two is spine-tingling. It is as if Maria Barbara's proper epitaph has finally been realized, and a moving and wonderfully stimulating recording created in the process. --Warwick Thompson |

Artist: Joe Farrell Album: Moon Germs Year: 1972 Release: 2002 Label: Sony Format, bitrate: Flac Size: 235 MB AMG Rating: Joe Farrell's Moon Germs was recorded in a single session in 1972, and was the third of six albums Farrell cut for CTI. Farrell had already played with Chick Corea's original Return To Forever group, contributing to the first two albums by what became one of fusion's seminal groups. Interestingly, Farrell plays no tenor at all on this album, opting instead for soprano sax on three tracks and flute on the remaining one. |

Artist: Cassandra Wilson Album: Live Label: Polygram Year: 1991 Format: FLAC (tracks) Time: 0.69:06 Size: 397 MB Amazon.com review: This live 1990 set makes clear that Cassandra Wilson had fully arrived. In the live setting, she calls on greater reserves of vim than mark her predominantly lolling, brooding studio dates. All to great effect. One senses Betty Carter-like showmanship, Peggy Lee-like swagger, and, of course, Nina Simone's otherworldly drone. Just as formative was Wilson's Joni Mitchell-inspired apprenticeship in the coffeehouses of Jackson, Mississippi, and other southern cities. She breathes fresh life into standards like "'Round Midnight." Her anthem of black resilience, "Don't Look Back," receives driving treatment. A telling selection is Wilson's own composition, "My Corner of the Sky," because its lyrics and delivery transport her to a distinctly personal space of the kind she was coming to inhabit so regally. -- Peter Monaghan |

Artist: Don Byas Album: All the Things You Are Label: A Jazz Hour With - Dist. Movieplay Year: 1990 - Rec. Jan.,1963 Genre: Jazz Format, bitrate: MP3@320 Kbps Time: 61:39 Size: 141 MB One of the greatest of all tenor players, Don Byas' decision to move permanently to Europe in 1946 resulted in him being vastly underrated in jazz history books. His knowledge of chords rivalled Coleman Hawkins, and, due to their similarity in tones, Byas can be considered an extension of the elder tenor. He played with many top swing bands, including those of Lionel Hampton (1935), Buck Clayton (1936), Don Redman, Lucky Millinder, Andy Kirk (1939-1940), and most importantly Count Basie (1941-1943). An advanced swing stylist, Byas' playing looked toward bop. |
