     At the end of 60's the Portuguese fado queen Amalia Rodrigues participated in a pioneering project: the album Amalia & Don Byas/Encontro, on which the American saxophonist lent some improvisatory flair to the rather stiff structures of the fado. The attempt was initiated by Luнs Villas-Boas, Portugal's major jazz promoter, in 1969 and released in an LP in 1973.

     Trumpeter Kenny Dorham was one of a select few jazz musicians whose career spanned the big band era, the emergence of bebop (he played with Charlie Parker), the institution of hard bop, and the 1960s "New Thing" or avant-garde (on the Andrew Hill classic POINT OF DEPARTURE). His trumpet sound was unparalleled, a melodious middle ground between Freddie Hubbard hot and Chet Baker cool. TRUMPET TOCCATA, from 1964, presents him at the height of his powers as a player, composer (three of the four tunes here are originals), and bandleader (with Richard Davis, young Joe Henderson, and pianist-for- all-seasons Tommy Flanagan).

     Pianist Jess Stacy did not lead that many recording sessions during the swing era since he spent long periods playing with the big bands of Benny Goodman and Bob Crosby. This excellent CD contains his 21 selections as a leader from a four-year period. Stacy's three numbers from 1935 include a solo Bix Beiderbecke medley and two songs with bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Gene Krupa. In addition, this set has Stacy's eight piano solos for Commodore, a duet with Bud Freeman on tenor ("She's Funny That Way"), and eight very rare performances (plus an alternate take) cut for Varsity in 1939 that also feature trumpeter Billy Butterfield, tenor saxophonist Eddie Miller, and either clarinetist Hank d'Amico or Irving Fazola in an octet.
