Doyle Bramhall - Bird Nest On The Ground (1994) |
Music » Blues » Modern electric blues |
Artist: Doyle Bramhall Album: Bird Nest On The Ground Label: Texas Music Group Year: 1994 Genre: Blues Tracks: 11 Format: mp3, Bitrate: @ CBR 320 File Size: 48 MB + 48 MB Doyle Bramhall has long been a legend on the Texas blues circuit and not much more than a rumor outside it. Bramhall is a solid drummer, but his reputation rests on his singing, a throaty combination of Doug Sahm and Bobby "Blue" Bland and the next best thing to Delbert McClinton himself. The songs here come from many different sessions with many different musicians, but Bramhall's gravely vocals hold it together whether he's singing in front of the Memphis Horns on Muddy Waters' "Bird Nest on the Ground" or in front of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble on Bramhall's own "Too Sorry." Bramhall's songwriting is best showcased on "Other Side of Love," the kind of R&B ballad Bland himself could have sunk his teeth into, while his instrumental chops are spotlighted on "Take Your Time, Son" (where Jimmie Vaughan and Bramhall's son trade guitar licks over dad's steady groove). |

Tinsley Ellis - Georgia Blue (1989) |
Music » Blues » Modern electric blues |

Artist: Tinsley Ellis Album: Georgia Blue Label: Alligator Records Year: 1989 Genre: Blues Tracks: 12 Format: mp3, Bitrate: @ CBR 320 File Size: 85 MB With GEORGIA BLUE, the 30-year-old Ellis reaches maturity as a guitarist and vocalist. Ellis’ deep love of the blues is represented here with tributes to the legends whose music inspired him, from Albert King's I’ve Made Nights By Myself to Texas Stomp, Tinsley’s own homage to the Texas guitar heroes Clarence ”Gatemouth” Brown and T–Bone Walker. When Tinsley wants to step out from the tradition, he delightfully picks his way through funky blues-rock originals like Can't You Lie and Free Man, the title of which is sort of a symbol of Ellis' evolution as a solo artist. As he puts it: ”Ten years ago you couldn’t buy a job as a blues guitarist in Georgia. It hasn’t happened overnight, but there’s a new audience for this music in the Deep South. I’m glad that people want to hear me play the music I really love.” Those of us who have watched Tinsley Ellis grow from a local guitar hero to an internationally recognized bluesman can agree wholeheartedly. ...Russ DeVault, Atlanta Journal–Constitution |

Artist: Tinsley Ellis Album: Fanning The Flames Label: Alligator Records Year: 1989 Genre: Blues Tracks: 11 Format: mp3, Bitrate: @ CBR 320 File Size: 81 MB FANNING THE FLAMES was released on Alligator in 1989. By now it was obvious that Ellis’ talents as a songwriter and vocalist were approaching his guitar prowess. With the nine original songs and a sound that incorporated funk rhythms into his already solid blues foundation, Ellis was entering musical territory that was all his own. Hundreds of radio stations and newspapers took notice across the country. In the debut issue of Guitar Extra!, the magazine gave Tinsley the lead review, declaring, ”Ellis plays his ass off at every turn, making this a fiery and complete blues package.” |

Tinsley Ellis - Fire It Up (1997) |

Artist: Tinsley Ellis Album: Fire It Up Label: Alligator Records Year: 1997 Genre: Blues Tracks: 12 Format: mp3, Bitrate: @ CBR 320 File Size: 55 MB + 55 MB Tinsley Ellis is a blues guitarist, with a rock edge. He’s released several excellent discs for Alligator Records over the past decade or so but always seems to remain just below the surface. His work is great and deserves much more attention than it’s gotten thus far. FIRE IT UP may just be the disc that finally breaks him because this is simply one of the best releases of 1997, blues or otherwise. The entire disc contains 12 songs, and there’s not a single throwaway track here. Every blues fan should have a copy of this one! To Tinsley Ellis, thanks for one hell of an album... |

Stan Kenton - Contemporary Concepts (1955) |
Music » Jazz » Mainstream |
Artist: Stan Kenton Album: Contemporary Concepts Label: Creative World Year: 1955 Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbps (+ covers) Time: 0.44:12 Contemporary Concepts is one of the less-important Stan Kenton LP reissues on Creative World. Six veteran standards (all arranged by Bill Holman) and Gerry Mulligan's "Limelight" (with a chart from its composer) were adapted for the 1955 Stan Kenton & His Orchestra; all but "Limelight" are available on CD. The music swings well (with drummer Mel Lewis pushing the rhythm section) and such talented soloists as altoists Charlie Mariano and Lennie Niehaus, tenor-saxophonist Bill Perkins, trombonist Carl Fontana, while trumpeters Sam Noto and Stu Williamson are well-featured. Nothing all that innovative occurs, but this accessible set should be of interest to fans of bop (in addition to Kenton's loyal audience) who do not already have the music on CD. [This version of the album includes bonus material.] -- Review by Scott Yanow, AMG. |
